Barbeau returns to Lakers’ bench to coach goaltenders
Sept. 8, 2015
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- Lake Superior State hockey coach Damon Whitten has announced that Terry Barbeau will return to the Lakers’ staff for a third stint as volunteer goaltending coach. The decision follows former LSSU assistant coach Peter Aubry’s departure to the Chicago Blackhawks.
“I have known Coach Whitten for over 15 years and I have a deep respect for his work ethic and knowledge of the game,” Barbeau said of the third bench boss he has worked with at LSSU. “I’m very excited to return to Lake Superior State University as their goalie coach.”
Barbeau will be counted on to continue the development of sophomore goaltender Gordon Defiel, who enjoyed a breakout season last year in which he compiled the most saves in the nation with 1,1148. He will also inherit rookie Nick Kossoff, along with junior Aaron Davis, who didn’t see action until a relief appearance in Western Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinals against Minnesota State.
“Terry’s not only had a strong legacy here with former Laker goalies like Jayme Platt, Kevin Kapalka, etc., but also in his work with goalies across North America,” Whitten said. “Anybody who knows Terry will tell you what a great person he is and how much he cares about the players, which I think will make him a great fit for our program."
Defiel returned the sentiment by saying, “I’m very excited about the hiring. Obviously losing Coach Aubry was a huge loss for our team because he did a lot of great things for the goalies, but I’ve met Coach Terry and he seems like a great guy and he has a wealth of experience.”
“He has a great background working with elite goaltenders and goaltenders can’t become successful without good goaltending coaching.”
The Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., native first worked with LSSU goaltenders from 1999-02. During his first season with the Lakers, Barbeau worked with Platt, who was a junior at the time. Platt saw meteoric growth that year and was named an NCAA Second Team All-America as well as All-Central Collegiate Hockey Association First Team. Platt posted a .926 saves percentage and a 2.40 goals-against average, both of which rank in LSSU’s top 10 single-season performances. During that first stint Barbeau also helped to lay the groundwork for another LSSU standout goaltender, Matt Violin.
Following a successful stint as the goaltending coach with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (Ontario Hockey League) from 2002-10, Barbeau returned to the LSSU staff in a volunteer capacity from 2010-14.
During that second stint with the Lakers, Barbeau added Kevin Kapalka to his list of impressive pupils. Kapalka compiled a 12-12-1 record during his freshman season and featured a 2.34 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage. That year Kapalka was named to the 2010-11 CCHA All-Rookie team.
Barbeau split time with the Saginaw Spirit (OHL) as a goaltending coach from 2011-14. He coached notable Spirit goaltenders Tadeas Galansky, Clint Windsor and Jake Paterson. Paterson played for the Soo Eagles (Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League) before joining the Spirit, and is now a member of the Detroit Red Wings organization.
Barbeau’s list of standout students is highlighted by Michigan native Ryan Miller, who played junior hockey for the Soo Indians. Under Barbeau’s tutelage for more than a decade, Miller went on to win a Hobey Baker Award during his sophomore season at Michigan State and was a finalist for the award in his junior season. Miller’s accomplishments during his professional career include a Vezina Trophy in 2009-10 as the top goaltender in the National Hockey League and a Winter Olympics’ Most Valuable Player acknowledgement during the Team U.S.A. Silver Medal finish in 2009-10.
