LSSU Lakers 2015 off-season thread

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015 off-season thread

The Penalty Box Radio guys (Nashville) have previewed your Lakers: http://penaltyboxradio.com/blog/2015/09/15/2015-2016-season-preview-lake-superior-state/

Thanks Geof. It's a bit on the overly negative side, missing out on some positive things that came out of last season (there weren't a lot), and failing to properly account for why some things didn't go so well. It also probably doesn't give enough credit to some of the new players coming in. But we're rebuilding, and it's not going to happen all at once.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015 off-season thread

Why good luck to Hultz ? Is he going somewhere ? My guess is the Lakers will be preseason picked to finish 9th or 10th .

I thought Hults was originally committed to Minnesota last year, and decided to come to Lake State late last spring? Also I thought his brother is set to come to Lake State in 2016-2017?

Generally true although it may be 2017-18 before Cole Hults is with the Lakers.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015 off-season thread

I see the coaches poll for the WCHA have the Lakers finishing in last and the media poll have them 9th with AA behind them.

WCHA holds coaches teleconference, announce preseason media and coaches polls

Sept. 21, 2015

EDINA, Minn. - The Western Collegiate Hockey Association held its annual media teleconference on Monday, featuring the coaches from all 10 member institutions. The conference call also featured comments WCHA Commissioner Bill Robertson and the league's supervisor of officials, Greg Shepherd. The results of the Mankato Free Press pre-season coaches poll and Bemidji Pioneer preseason media poll were also announced.

Robertson opened the teleconference boasting the quality of the league.

"Top to bottom, I think we have the strongest league in college hockey," he said. "I do believe we'll have several teams representing the league in the national tournament again this season."

Shepherd briefly explained a new policy regarding goaltender interference. He mentioned that when a goaltender comes out of the crease and initiates contact with an opposing player, a goal will count. On the other hand, if an opposing player is in the crease and hinders the goaltender's movement or vision in any way, the goal will not count. Shepherd was clear that the emphasis will be to allow more goals and said of video-review, "When in doubt, the goal must count."

Not so much of a rule change, as much as a point of emphasis this season, league officials are tasked with being more consistent in their decisions in 2015-16. Shepherd stressed, "To ensure the best player safety, an emphasis will be made on standards of enforcement, not just throughout a game but also throughout the weekend series."

During his segment, LSSU head coach Damon Whitten spoke about the different look his team will have this year and the expectations they have as a group.

"For us, our success will be determined on the back end and how well Gordie Defiel comes prepared for this season," said Whitten.

Whitten also stressed the importance of the growth his defensive corps experienced last season. The Lakers return every defenseman from last year's squad, and a group that featured four freshmen per night throughout the majority of the season and as many as five freshmen in many of their games. Whitten fondly views it as "an extremely competitive situation."

After finishing ninth in the standings and making their first-ever trip to the WCHA quarterfinals in 2014-15, the Lakers were chosen to finish 10th in the 2015-16 standings by the coaches in a poll conducted by Shane Frederick of the Mankato Free Press.

Affiliated media members throughout the league chose the Lakers to repeat as the ninth-placed team in the league via the Bemidji Pioneer's media poll conducted by Jack Hittinger.

LSSU players were snubbed in both the coaches and media All-WCHA Pre-Season Teams and WCHA Pre-Season Player of the Year categories.

A trio of freshmen Lakers were recognized by the league's coaches and media as vote-getters for the Preseason WCHA Rookie of the Year award, which was awarded to Corey Mackin of Ferris State by the coaches and Stephen Bayliss from Bowling Green by the media.

Lakers Owen Headrick (Garden River, Ont.) and Anthony Nellis (Breakeyville, Que.) each received media votes.

Prior to joining the Lakers, Headrick spent two seasons with the Soo Thunderbirds of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. During his first season (2013-14), Headrick amassed 8-23--31 in 56 games en route to winning the NOJHL Rookie of the Year Award. He accumulated 2-11--13 in 15 playoff games that season. In 2014-15, an injury limited him to 13 regular-season games, during which he totaled 4-9--13. Returning in time for the postseason, Headrick was named the NOJHL Playoffs MVP after posting 12-8--20 in 14 playoff appearances. The Thunderbirds won both the NOJHL regular-season and playoff championships. In four Dudley Hewitt Cup games, Headrick posted 0-5--5 and the Thunderbirds claimed the title while going 4-0-0. Headrick also claimed the Dudley Hewitt Cup's Most Sportsmanlike Player Award.

Nellis finished third in the Central Canadian Hockey League scoring after posting 32-48--80 during 2014-15. He also led the CCHL in playoff scoring with 8-17--25 in 16 games, and led the Pembroke Lumber Kings to a second-place finish at the Bogart Cup Championship series.

Mitch Hults (Stoughton, Wisc.) received a pre-season vote from WCHA coaches. Hults appeared in 55 games for the Madison Capitols of the United States Hockey League during the 2014-15 season and scored 13-21--34. He appeared in 36 games for the dormant Indiana Ice (USHL) during the 2013-14 season and scored 5-6--11. Hults appeared in eight playoff games for the Ice, scoring 5-0--5, and helped the team capture the USHL's Clark Cup. In 119 USHL games, Hults compiled 23-35--58.

The Lakers open the 2015-16 season with a Blue vs. Gold scrimmage on Oct. 3 at 3:07 p.m. On Oct. 4 the Lakers will host an exhibition contest at 5:07 p.m. against the U.S. National Team Development Program's under-18 squad. The first regular-season contest for the Lakers will be an Oct. 9 non-conference matchup against North Dakota at the Ice Breaker Tournament held in Portland, Maine.

I enjoy reading the articles, but I agree that this has nothing to do with Laker Hockey and shouldn't be posted here unless they are related to Laker hockey.

On an unrelated note, I do not care for the new WCHA site.

The new jerseys look ok, I guess I do like the 'retro' feel of the home jerseys, but... I still love the older ones from 1992-1996. Still the best ones, imo. I prefer the stripes down the sleeves, and a bigger Laker logo.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015 off-season thread

I don't like your logo front and center on a jersey, but it looks good a shoulder patch. I design hockey jerseys for fun in my spare time, and one idea I played around with for LSSU was anchors around the bottom of the jersey like the fleur-de-lis around the old Quebec Nordiques' jerseys: http://content.sportslogos.net/logos/1/33/full/jaemga78nbn19vz7k7fsgjtg7.gif

Have to disagree on the look of the LSSU logo. To me, the top two jersey features in our conference are the Laker Anchor and the UAF polar bear. Both are distinctive; the NCAA isn't exactly crawling with Lakers or Nanooks, and these distinctive logo items speak to that. In the case of the anchor, it is also a good reminder of a proud, unique program rich in history. And the polar bear? Well, that just looks cool.

Anyway, have I shown enough of my dorky side now?

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015 off-season thread

I don't read this board that often anymore, but now I am confused. Is someone who has been a Whitten basher from the start now a mouthpiece for Sovereign Communications? I'm sure that will go over well the next time the contract comes up......

Hey Bill, thanks for posting the list of recruits we have in the USHL this year. I have my calendar marked for when they all come to Chicago.

Re: LSSU Lakers 2015 off-season thread

Was not sounding very optimistic a few months back. Couldn't even spell the coach's name correctly.

*This coach won 8 of 36 games this season, half the total from last season.

*Out of 36 games this season, the Lakers scored one goal or less in 21 of those 36.

* The Lakers scored 2 goals or less in 27 games for the season.

*No other team had more losses in the nation that Lake Superior State.

*Power play last in the nation all year long.

*All other stats last or near last in the league and the nation.

*Attendance was as low as it has ever been for the season, with fewer fans attending games this season in recent memory.

*For his career, Mr. Witten has won 86 out of 298 games as either head or assistant coach with LSSU, Michigan Tech, Alaska Anchorage, and Wayne State (video taping doesn't count)

What I'm saying here is this guy didn't have a record of accomplishment on his resume, and certainly hasn't helped his situation or this team in one year with their record on the ice, and his constant complaining off it and in interviews. All one has to do is go to the podcasts of the Laker Hockey Show or listen to his interviews after the game, where he, at times sounds snide and certainly unprofessional complaining about officials.

Maybe everything will come together and the Lakers will have a great weekend, or maybe next year with his system and a few more recruits it will start to take shape, or maybe in a few years once he fully gets the chance.

After one regular season, I certainly have my doubts!

Ha. I thought the same thing. Now he's in here taking up half pages trying to use Laker Hockey to promote Sovereign Communications.

Your welcome Mogerfan. I'm not so sure someone is trying to be a mouthpiece for Sovereign; sounds more like sarcastic trolling to me.

Whitten tabs Austin McKay as captain of the 2015-16 Lakers

Sept. 25, 2015

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lake Superior State hockey head coach Damon Whitten announced that the captain for the 2015-16 season will be senior Austin McKay. Seniors Bryce Schmitt and Eric Drapluk were named the team’s assistant captains.

McKay, a Toronto native, registered a career-high five goals last season while playing in a career-high 35 games. His 37 shots, five points and a team-leading two power-play goals were all career-highs for McKay.

McKay also blocked 31 shots on the defensive end and was named a Western Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar Athlete for achieving a 3.50 or higher grade-point average for the second straight season.

“It means a great deal to me,” McKay said of receiving the captain’s C. “It’s especially an honor with how much tradition our great program has and all the great players that have played here. It’s such a surreal feeling and a big responsibility that I take seriously.”

“Austin has the respect of the team and the command of the room. His passion for the game and for Laker hockey is without parallel,” said Whitten. “We know as a staff that Austin will say and do the right things at all times and will be a great extension of the coaching staff in the dressing room.”

Schmitt, a fourth-year forward from Minot, N.D., has seen his production steadily climb over the last three seasons. Last year Schmitt finished second on the team in goals and points after collecting career highs of 7-8--15.

“What really came to mind for me when I was named as a captain was just looking back at what this program has accomplished,” said Schmitt. “I also thought of the previous guys who wore the letters for this program, and I hope to lead the team like they did.

“A goal for me as a captain is to lead this team by example,” Schmitt continued, “I may not be a guy who comes up with a pregame pep talk, but I plan on doing the right things day in and day out to help this team succeed.”

Schmitt returns with the third-most career points among active Lakers with 17-15--32. His 17 career goals tie him with junior Alex Globke for the team’s highest active career total.

“Bryce is a guy you love to coach,” Whitten said. “He never requires additional attention for outside matters. He shows up every day and brings a high compete level to the ice. He demands teammates to match his work ethic and commitment on a daily basis. With those attributes he will lead by example and aid our team in being prepared to play every day.”

At the Soo BlueLiners banquet last spring, Schmitt was honored as the co-recipient of the Jim Howie Unsung Hero award along with senior captain Andrew Dommett. The award honors the team’s hardest-working individual and leader on and off of the ice.

The Lakers expect McKay and Schmitt to set lasting examples of hard work and dedication on a young crop of forwards.

Drapluk earned the role of assistant captain last season and will continue to hold that status this season. The senior from Pembroke Pines, Fla. will continue to be counted on to support a young defensive corps.

Last season Drapluk led the Lakers in average time on ice last season and tied for the team lead in defensive scoring with 3-8-11. Drapluk was named the team's Most Valuable Defenseman after appearing in all 38 games and anchoring the team's top defensive pairing.

“I am honored to be recognized as a leader and a captain by my teammates and the coaching staff,” Drapluk said of his second tour of duty as an assistant captain. “We are very excited to get to work and strive to be one of the top teams in the nation."

“Eric was part of our leadership group last year and did a great job of helping five freshmen defensemen adjust to the college game,” said Whitten. “He will be a big piece of our success this year. Eric's leadership style tends to be more of a lead by example approach, but he also has a great ability to know when he needs to speak up and make his voice heard.”

This year’s captains won’t be alone in carrying the weight of leadership roles inside the locker room. The captains group will have the advantage of being supported by seniors Zach Loesch, Peter Spratte and Daniel Vernace. Whitten believes the entire class will come together as a group to lead the program.

“While we will certainly look to our captains to guide our program this season, they are surrounded by a strong supporting cast,” Whitten said of his senior group. “Our captains, along with our other seniors have put together a strong summer on and off the ice in order to be prepared to lead our team this season. We will look to that entire group to steer Laker hockey in the 2015-16 season.”

The Lakers open their season Oct. 3 at 3:07 p.m. with a Blue vs. Gold scrimmage game at Taffy Abel Arena. They face the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18s on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 5:07 p.m. Admission to the Blue vs. Gold scrimmage is free. To purchase tickets to the exhibition game against and other games throughout the season, please call 906-635-2602 or order tickets online, lssutickets.universitytickets.com.

Luke Morgan scored his first USHL goal tonight, a short handed one which turned out to be the game winner in a Cedar Rapids win over Lincoln.
