LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

I know everyone is on the "what-if?" train these days, but lets change the tune and look at the positives of the last season and upcoming one.

1) We were picked to finish 10th in the CCHA and ended up 7th with a winning record.
2) We hosted a home playoff series
3) Recruiting is getting better due to recent players spreading the word about how great it is here. I've spoken with 3 players from the last few seasons who have helped us get a guy or two.
4) We are getting a $5,000,000 renovation to turn our hockey facilities into top-tier shape.
5) We have an NHL-caliber goalie (when he plays at his best).

If we had a 40-point star forward here we would be in really good shape. Anyone know of any sitting around waiting for a phone call? haha

Could not agree more. This past season was a lot of fun. It had frustrating moments, to be sure. And perhaps the team ran out of steam at the end of the year. But everything listed above is entirely correct. I see this program as properly addressing some core issues that have long needed attention. The move to the WCHA and meaningful games against UP rivals should also be fun. Lots to look forward to in Laker Land. Its a fan's priviledge to complain and nit-pick. But the big picture is this:

In 2011-2012, we spent more time discussing the PWR, top-20 rankings, home-ice scenarios, and "next big road series" more than anytime in the last 3-4 years. But for the team fading down the stretch, as of mid-Febraury there was real, serious, and not-just-for-laughs discussions about top-four finishes, JLA appearances, and even NCAA talk.

All in all, a darn good year.

And next year, they bring most everybody back.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Roque has stated (this past Winter) that he thinks the Lakers are a season away from being a really good team, which means this coming season there should be more pressure on he and the team to perform well.

Cassiani is the only key forward loss, so with everyone else back they will be expected to score more next season. They have key losses on D, with Trotman and Haines leaving, and that may be the iffy spot going into next season. Basically Perrault, Czuczman and Bruneteau are the only experienced D men coming back with Sternberg also seeing a little more action there late this past season. Drapluk will probably be counted on pretty heavily of the incoming D, and perhaps Loesch as well. Wees is still a bit of an unknown as to how well he can play D. They are probably still looking for 1 more D man for next season.

I don't think there are expectations for either of the incoming forwards, Johnson and McKay, to be big scorers (certainly not right away), but you never know. The 2013-14 recruiting class will be very important at forward since we will be losing Monardo, McParland and Powers, with the first 2 expected to be among the leading scorers this coming season. That's probably the next chance to try and recruit one of those speedy, gritty, slick with the stick, 40 point centers we have been hoping for.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

I'm fine with Truth Squad. The ones that bother me are the ones that target the kids
When they thought Truth Squad was Coach Anzalones wife they attacked their son and now it's Nick Sellers. When Truth talks about Coach Anzalone everyone can tell he does it because it's a sore spot with Coach Roque and his friends. I don't think Coach Anzalone had anything to do with Nick Sellers did he? The years don't line up. How would your dad have been if you went through what Truth's kid did? Could someone tell me how many players have been cut by Lake State do to performance? I know there have been some discipline or academic issues but actually for performance? Correct me if I am wrong but I read that he still got his scholarship until he graduated. It makes no sense to me that a kid that was not a cancer was on campus under scholarship not at least practicing because of a recruiting mistake by the staff. This is why I don't see Truth Squad the way most of you do. My dad would have gone bananas.

To end my Truth Squad for president rant, I think he could make all kinds of stuff up but he is pretty accurate when he posts. The Lakers are always picked near the bottom of the league. They have always finished in the bottom half of the league. They do drop in the standings the second half of the year. Coach Roque has had trouble with the league office. People make excuses like budgets and pay scale. There seems to be less people at the games, especially in playoffs. Coach Anzalone did put the Lakers on the map....at least the first time around.
I don't blame coach Roque for any of this but he has been given a longer leash than any other coach with a similar record. This year he will become the longest tenured coach in Laker history and has never had a league record above .500.
The best way to deal with Truth Squad is obvious but as long as his predictions keep holding out, I guess people will continue to trash his kid. I hope you guys have the right guy this time.

You have implied a couple of times that what the Lakers lack is a 40 point forward. Previously you stated that all the Lakers needed was a 20 goal, 40 point centerman. I am a statistic nut so for the record, every team in the league lacked that guy in fact only two teams in the league had a 40 point man and none of these teams finished in the top three in the league so that guy didn't make the difference you imply. There was no centerman in the league that had 20G and 20A, the closest was Tynan from Notre Dame who scored 13 goals and his team finished below the Lakers in the standings so I am not sure how that comment is a defense for where the Lakers finished. I agree the Lakers have a great goaltender, probably as good as Jeff Jakaitis. I agree we have good forwards and good defenseman. I agree we are competitive every night and that is enough for me to go enjoy a hockey game. That's all I care about. I also know that we started the year something like 9-1 and ended finishing one game over .500. I also know that in non-conference games we were 1-2-0 against RIT and Bemidji who were the top teams we played at 29 and 31 in the country. I also know that we were 4-0-1 against Canisius, Alabama and Vermont who had a combined record of 18-77-6 and were 53, 54 and 57 out of 58 teams in Division I hockey. I like going to Laker games and I think Coach Roque is doing a fine job for the commtment level of the University. The school is getting their moneys worth. I would feel differently if ticket prices increased or if the University were to make a financial commitment to improve the program. Bowling Green, Western, UMinn Mankato, Nebraska, Michigan Tech all made financial commitments to improve and started with a coaching change and significant money put into the programs. As long as we are not heading in that direction, As it stands, I have no problem with where we finish and scheduling weak opponents to keep us locals interested.

I would add a #6) They were an exciting team to watch and the games I saw I never saw anyone give up.

To be fair, I was the poster who chimed in regarding LSSU's long-standing-long-missing need for a 40-point center. My intent was to hammer home the long-standing-long-missing need of an impact forward, a "top five in the league" scorer. And my point was probably pretty obvious: If the Lakers had a top-five scorer on their team last season, he would've been an excellent compliment to already-good defense, goaltending, and solid checking of the rest of the team.

I see the point, somewhat, regarding the non-conference record against less-than-the-best NC D-I schools. But for a nasty raging horrible flu empidemic, they would have swept up the teams they SHOULD sweep -- Canisuis (the tie a direct result of the team being quite sick), UAH, and Vermont. The RIT and BSU games are more problematic to me, although a brief glance at BSU's record last year shows them randomly playing very tough against some very tough teams. They were a prototypical WCHA team, which means that on any given night, they can beat anyone. No excuses for LSSU not taking care of business at home. RIT beat LSSU, that is true -- but hey, wait, they beat Ferris (National Runner Up) 3-0 the night before, so RIT was hot for a weekend. So what? LSSU SHOULD have a 5-2-1 record against these teams, and perhaps should have, with some health and a bounce against BSU, been 7-1.

There were 41 players in D-I that scored 40+ points last season. So its not exactly a significant or rare accomplishment. There were 26 D-I players who notched 20+ goals. And its been a long time since the Lakers had a 40-pointer (at least before the 1999-2000 season, which is as far back as the USCHO database goes).

So that was my point. Nothing more than, "Gosh, it sure would be nice to see a top flight scoring forward at LSSU."

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Sorry about the accidental name mixup. Hope Glory accepts my apology too.
I get your point about a scorer. It would help and I'm sure one is close at hand. The change of leagues will help. I would think Schofield would have passed that mark in the new WCHA.
I was trying to point out that whoever does the scheduling has done a better job keeping interest alive. If we would have played a stronger non-league schedule we probably would have had a losing record and nobody wants that. I am saying exactly what you are saying. The non-league record was great and usually is. The only difference between the optimism we have now and the negativity that we had with Coach Borek is the non-league schedule. Both guys are probably great guys, I know I really liked coach Borek but no-one thought he was a good coach. But his biggest problem was he followed up Coach Jackson who is a legend. Coach Roque was able to follow up Coach Anzalone who had a terrible run his second time around. Record wise Coach Borek was much more successful in CCHA league play than Coach Roque has been. We have won just two more games in league play in Coach Roques 7 years than Coach Borek won in just five years. That means it basically took 56 league games (two seasons) for Coach Roque to win as many games as Coach Borek did in league play. The difference in the two is in non-conference scheduling and it shows what a little brains can do to keep people positive and behind the program. I think Coach Borek made a big mistake in his career by scheduling the same caliber teams Coach Jackson did. His legacy should not be as bad as it is.

The cupboard wasn't exactly bare when Borek took over. There were still some talented players left from the Jackson years, which helps explain why he would have a better CCHA record than Roque. The talent and level of play did steadily go down during the Borek years. I don't think the scheduling of non-conference games makes all that big of a deal. We were still a power (or closer to it) during the early Borek years, so it made sense to try and schedule tougher non-con games. We were still a big "name" hockey school; other big name schools were more willing to play us. Beating tougher opponents gets you more points in the power rankings. There is less likelihood of other big names schools wanting to play us now; they don't have much to gain by it; we don't draw as well anymore and they don't get as much of a benefit beating us (and more to lose if we beat them) from a rankings standpoint.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

The Lakers went to the NCAA tournament 9 consecutive years from 1988-1996. Borek too over after that. The team hasn't made the NCAA tourney since. That is his legacy.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Things could really be looking "up" in the UP, eh?

New hockey conference for our three schools. Much joy.

LSSU is addressing funding and facilities issues. Much joy.

A decent season for LSSU and hope for more next year with most key players returning. Much joy.

The sun is out (sort of) and summer is not far behind. Much joy.

And a lovely rumor bouncing around that some people are starting to kick the tires about the long dreamt realization of freedom from the tyranny and absurdity of Michigan's broken ecomonic and political structure and perhaps the forming of a new State. I had lunch at the 51st State Saloon today (the pasties and gravy are God-given), and dreamed my little dream. The friends I was having lunch with suggested that the new capital be Sault Ste. Marie since its connected to the Interstate system, and because Marquette is evil.

Yup . . . shaping up to be a nice summer in the UP.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Great idea. I second Sault Ste. Marie for State Capital. I nominate Tony Bosbous for Governor or anyone who will promise to fix the potholes in front of my house. We have Scott Schackleton and Gary McDowell for U.S. Congress.
I recommend the State bird to be the mosquito. State fish to be the whitefish. State flower to be the dandilion. State tree the poplar. What would the name of the 51st. State be? North Michigan? Great Lakes State? Favorite food could be the Pasty with Indian taco's a close second.
Many years ago in history class in high school we learned that Calumet was in the original running to be the state capital of Michigan before Lansing was selected. How different things may have turned out.

Calumet has the coolest Curling Club in the world. Nothing wrong with that. I would LOVE to live in a home-state in which the tour of the Capital for the school kids includes (and probably ONLY incluses, haha) showing off the natural-ice curling rink in the old pump house. Sure beats what good UP kids have to endure now . . . a five hour (plus) bus ride to filthy Lansing. Thanks, but no thanks. Heck, I would even be willing to be magnanimous and put the Capital centrally located, like in Ishpeming (just not, as I said, Marquette. Because Marquette is poopy, and everybody knows it).

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

The biggest problem that I had with Scott Borek is that he felt that he couldn't change Jeff Jackson's style, even when Jackson didn't have his type of players the last few seasons. One of the reasons that the assistants left before Jeff was he was going away from the things that made him successful which set up Borek for failures. The first few years he brought in several players who
had great stats in Juniors and he stiffeled them.....too bad.

A very interesting take. I often wondered how Jackson would have handled the massive changes in the college hockey landscape during the late 90's and if he could have kept up Lake State's fortunes....some how I doubt it and this is why he left.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

jnacc........remember that Jeff left LSSU for bigger & better things when he announced that he was leaving for the NHL. When LSSU made him the Hockecy Coach AND AD, he returned. He felt that his growth was being stiffled by the small market D1 program with it's puny budget. The change in character of the last two recruiting classes are the reasons he also lost his two very accomplished recruiting assistants. The realitiy is that the Lakers were already headed South when Scott Borek attempted unsuccessfully to pull them out of the tailspin and in fact, accelerated their demise.

Agreed....what Frank Anzalone did (and to a lesser extent Jackson) was both magical and miraculous and I do not believe could ever be repeated in the environment college hockey finds itself in today.

How were the Lakers already heading south when Borek took over ? The last year Jackson coached, the Lakers had a 30-8-1 record with some good recruits coming in and others that decided not to come when they learned Jeff Jackson had moved on . Jackson was first moving on to MI State as an assistant and returned when Lake State offered him the head coaching job . They also did make him the AD later on to entice him to stay as long as they could hold on to him with better pay and control of sports at Lake State. I don't think Lake State was heading south in Jacksons last year .

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

I just would like to say that I wish Lake State all of the luck in the world (except when they play Michigan, come on, you've gotta be realistic as Michigan is my team). I'm still impressed by what you did in the 90's, especially since you're such a smaller school. I hope that you dominate the new WCHA in a couple of years, and as always DESTROY northern. I really dislike those schmucks, I respected them several years ago but their fans are such idiots that I absolutely hate them now.

Go Lake State!
