LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

As for the goalie situation, best case scenario from Roque's perspective is: Kapalka comes back quickly, has a great season and turns pro. Ravn also gets fed up and leaves. That leaves Murdoch and Marble and they'll find a 3rd string goalie who played high school hockey or maybe low level Junior hockey.

Its common for coaches to recruit multiple players for a spot. Its unusual that a coach, in his case Roque, has been able to land two -- and what appears to be three -- top-end goalies. We LSSU faithful have always said that LSSU needs to land a few top recruits from time to time. I think its a very impressive situation. If KK, Ravn, and Murdock stay on next year, the Lakers can use a redshirt on Marble (I have always believed that redshirts should be used more in college hockey, but thats a whole different thread). There are injuries and early signings, and the Lakers depend on good goaltending. So nothing would be worsefor LSSU than to have a hole in goal. Right now we have two outstanding keepers, and a third who is a recruited scholarship kid. That is GREAT depth at the tem's most important position.

And it appears that the Lakers are set to maintain that depth for many coming years.

And here is another wonderfl feature of having a logjam in the net: Roque and his assistants can spend their limited time and money for recruiting concentrating on other positions. No time spent, not one second wasted, travelling to look at goalies. Again, a good thing. Allocation of limited assets. Wouldn't it be a shame to miss out on the next Jim Dowd because our coaches had to be in Poratge, Mantitoba, to look at a goalie? (not saying the next Jim Dowd is out there, nor am I commenting on Roque's staff's ability to lure the next Jim Dowd. But when we are talking about allocating resources, certainly more time can be spent in the next two years looking for that "diamond in the rough" we've all be hoping for).

Lakerblue, The days of limited recruiting funds are over. LSSU has a budget on par with the current CCHA median, and in the top 1/3 of the new WCHA.
One os the reasons the talent level has improved, is the wider net that can be cast.

Complete Game.

Nice win, fun crowd. Things are looking up . . . . now lets finish the job tonight.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

I came up to the Soo for this weekend's series and thought neither team generated a lot of grade A scoring chances from in front of the net nor were there very many good up ice rushes. Both teams generated most of what scoring chances they had from scrambles in close near the net. The exceptions were Lain's goal for the Lakers and the lone Ferris goal. Both teams played good D. The big late 2nd period push won it for the Lakers. Lain's goal was probably the first really tough chance Motte (Ferris goalie) had to face in the game and maybe it rattled him a bit.

The Lakers should expect Ferris to come out hard and play better tonight so they need to match that. It's all about protecting home ice.

(I sat in Section P) :-)

Seven power plays and forty some shots. The Lakers need to solve the offensive game or this will be another 500 season at best.

Re: LSSU Hockey 2012-2013

I wonder if Ravn (Ravn, Truth Boy, NOT Raven) will get a start next weekend?
It may depend upon whether Kapalka is ready to play again. If so, Roque may very well give him at least one start against UAH to get him back in the groove. The other start more than likely would go to Murdock, although it's possible Roque might start Ravn (or even Kapalka again). If Kapalka still isn't quite ready to go next weekend, then Murdock will likely get the Friday start and possibly Ravn the Saturday start, assuming the Lakers don't get upset on Friday and assuming Roque is willing to finally give Ravn a start. If Kapalka isn't ready and Murdock gets both starts against UAH, then I have a hard time envisioning Ravn ever getting a start unless both other guys are injured or too ill to play.

I thought I heard Kapalka was getting another MRI this week which may tell us that there is still an issue going on.

You generally want to see at least 2 goals from 7 PP chances. They hurt themselves by taking 2 offensive zone penalties while on the PP; once early in the game and again during the 5 minute major PP late in the game. Too many little things went wrong to win a low scoring close game. The PP wasn't good enough. Murdock gave up a couple of juicy rebounds, the one being the game winner and the other at the end of the 2nd period that almost turned into a goal (I think one of the Laker D got a small piece of the rebound shot). Monardo had a good chance to clear the puck on the 1st Ferris PP but failed to do so and a few seconds later the puck wound up in the Laker net. Radke had 2 breakaways and didn't even get a shot on net on either one; the 1st one he didn't have much room to work with and backhanded it just wide of the net (at least it looked that way from my angle); the second one late in the game he had more room and tried to go high but shot it over the net. Ferris came out and played with more energy than the Lakers for a good portion of the game, especially early when building the 2 goal lead. They challenged the puck much more than the Lakers did when it entered their defensive zone and had better defensive positioning.

One thing that really frustrated me watching the game: I don't know how many times the Lakers mishandled the puck or lost their balance with the puck in the offensive zone, but it was a lot. A lot of potential scoring chances went down the drain.

They did shoot a lot more and had a lot of shots on goal, which is good, but a lot of them were from out a ways.

Once this thread maxes out at 50 pages and a new one is started I will do my first progress update on my goal projections for the season
