Lowell, 2016 Off-Season Thread

Re: Lowell, 2016 Off-Season Thread

23 year old fart checking in

I think that is giving them too many yrs. I would guess 21. Discovering alcohol and more interested in hoisting a few than seeing the game (everyone I talked to said sight lines were awful)

No. They worry about poor conditions, injury. If it was for fun maybe but when it is a league game- no.

I hear the grammar horse neighing

Re: Lowell, 2016 Off-Season Thread

I feel bad for the athletes and the coach. The coach, Mr Hughes, used to be at Dracut High. Taught history and was golf coach. Nicest guy you will ever meet.

I know this is a growing time but it always makes my heart ache for the athletes who get screwed in the process. They chose to make a commitment in good faith to the U, bypassing other opportunities, made changes in their lives, invested time into planning things out to succeed, then, poof! All gone and fairly late in the year, after other places have already recruited and pretty much have teams set. Sure they can transfer but the opportunities are not going to be the same as if they were Freshmen. Same thing happened when they moved up to D I. Kids who would have been All American in some of the sports, amazing in their sport, are now an afterthought in a conference that isn't that great and now they can't compete at a national level.

For some reason this kind of stuff really bugs me. Maybe because I have a kid this age and if they offed his sport he would be like a bus that lost the wheels at 100mph

I'm not as shook up because I never understood why we went varsity in golf to start with... Especially given the other sports we abandoned such as tennis.

(Edit: of course if my coworker were here he'd mention swimming but that happened before my time and he went to northeastern so... Blah.)

---

I still think the bigger crime was raising crew to varsity and then immediately dropping it.

---

Will have to see what this will mean to the overall program

Not arguing the need for the move. I think they added it because they had someone give $$ toward it. Same with crew. I just feel bad for the people who invested their trust and time only to be displaced.

I'm not so sure about that after reading this. It seems like the coach and rowers were totally on board not being DI as they never wanted to be given America East had no rowing, etc. It's an interesting read that makes a lot of sense.

The school sets another attendance record, and they decide to play two less home games next season?

The schedule is essentially the same as last year. The game against Brown in Belfast and the AIC game get replaced with a 2-game series at UNO. Instead of ASU coming here for a pair, the North Country schools do. The difference is the RPI game is on the road instead of at home, and the extra game with UMass is in Amherst not Lowell. For all the complaints about last year's non-conference schedule, this year's is much better.

My point is they are playing 16 games at the Tsongas this season instead of the 18 they've been playing in recent years. I'm not sure why they would give up that revenue? I suppose they could make up for it next season with 20 home games. I agree the OOC schedule is better. If scheduling 18 home games this season meant they would need to host two Atlantic Hockey teams then I'm glad they will be playing UNO on the road instead.

Scheduling isn't easy... 34 games to work with. Best of "fair" conditions that's 17 games... Then consider neutral site games and series to pay back and the rest... It will happen.

On the other hand, these schools will have to return some of these dates.
