Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

From the 2013-14 D1 Commitments thread, LU has a new recruit:

To Lindenwood University -

Saville Pickar........F........Little Caesars 19U........Lynnwood, WA

She played for Pursuit of Excellence out of Kelowna, BC last season. No stats are available. Anyone have any additional information to share?

She played two years for Pursuit of Excellence. This season she moved back to the US and played for Little Caesars. She is an aggressive player that does well around the net and is not afraid to get into the corners and be physical. She is a very strong PK player and can play all forward positions. Strong cneter who wins face offs and is very diligent in the defensive zone. Knows the game, reads the ice well. A player that makes others around her better. Not many players out work her on and off the ice. Points wise she will be a bigger assist generator than goal scorer.

Thanks for the background on Seville Pickar. It sounds like she will be an excellent addition as LU builds its program.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Well done, could not have said it better myself. Kids like that make great team mates.

As for the LU situation, the school, the coaches, the players and the recruits knew what they were getting into when they decided to dive off of the deep end to become a D-1 program. Now that they are living it, and absolutely improving year-over-year, you have a select few arm chair quarterbacks (and parents of players) whining because they aren't winning enough?????? Give me a break. There are bigger life lessons here at play, such as being a part of a team, paying your dues (you or your parents may think you are great, but if you are not a good team mate you may be sitting), you may not like your "boss" but you certainly have to work for him and perform, etc. etc. etc. Living a bit too much in an unrealistic, instant gratification society. Enjoy the ride a little more because it will be over before you know it, but the lessons learned will provide a lifetime of benefit.

Lastly as for the "serious D-1 recruits" that 123kid mentions, if even 1 D-1 school recruits you and that is Lindenwood, then I would bet my house that 9 out of 10 of those ladies would play D-1 there before they go to play D3 elsewhere. JMHO.

I agree Mission, parents should be parents and let the coaches and players worry about wins and losses, etc... Schools hold coaches very accountable for records, I remember the media all upset just a month or two ago about a college football coach fired with a winning record.

Parents: If you're daughter is truly upset with a program, she has to make a choice: 1) to leave hockey and stay at said school, 2) continue playing and education at said school, or 3) if she doesn't like the program and school- transfer... If your daughter isn't complaining then don't complain either, building a competitive DI program takes time.

LU has improved on last year and will likely improve next year... As I said early, transitioning from NAIA to NCAA and not being eligible for championships can effect recruiting... once LU is a full NCAA member, it will likely be more competitive recruiting.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

We visited Lindenwood as a part of our daughter's recruiting process, and while she chose to go to a different school for a variety of reasons, we all LOVED Lindenwood. I would classify my daughter as a "serious recruit" if you will (although not entirely sure the exact definition, perhaps!)

The coaches took time to give us an excellent tour, answered all of our questions, stayed in touch, and were friendly and professional at the same time. They were *clearly* aware of where the program had been...and where they want to go in the future. They've chosen to play a tough schedule against many quality out-of-conference opponents, which is a great stretch for the team.

Lindenwood is a great option for Minnesota players, since so many of them would go the smaller, private schools here locally (St. Olaf, St. Bens, St. Thomas, Augsburg, etc.) if hockey were not in the picture. Instead of *having* to go out East to play (which many girls clearly do *want* to do...but some do because they can't get a slot in the WCHA), they may choose to go down to LU. It's an 8-9 hour drive, vs. a plane ride. The campus was very nice, quite attractive, and in a metro area (St. Louis) with many interesting things to do. They've built something like 10 new dorms in the last few years. The school has some ambitious growth targets, and they don't seem at all in danger of shutting down the women's hockey program, unlike a number of other schools. Our daughter also really liked the fact that about 75% of the student body participated in a sport - at the club, D-3 and D-2 levels. Hopefully the coaches will get more involved in Os, Elite League and National Camp activities, to spread awareness and build connections.

While you don't know what things are really like until you're on the inside, I would have been happy to have my daughter play for Coach Vince and his staff. Yes, there is ample room for growth and improvement, but we've been impressed with the strides they made this year. Any player or parent expecting otherwise perhaps wasn't looking at the situation realistically.

Building (or in some cases, rebuilding) a D-1 hockey program is quite a challenge. I commend the coaching staff for jumping into the pool and getting wet. Like any program, players and coaches will 'click' in some cases, and not in others. But it's sad that in such a public forum, some people feel compelled to bad mouth the coaching staff like this. If your daughter is that unhappy then perhaps it's time for her to decide to move on, rather than have you vent in public.

They should always focus recruiting on both offense and defense.

Lindenwood recruits???

While I've seen them at a couple showcases, I haven't heard 1 kid from Illinois mention that Lindenwood contacted them or is recruiting them. It is a little over 4 hours drive to Chesterfield from Chicago. In the this area of the hockey world that is like recruting in your backyard.

Can you (or anyone out there) provide any background info on Holley Dietzler?
You may want to ask in this thread; sometimes people only read the threads that pertain to their teams/interests:

Also, there is a forum for Minnesota girls high school hockey if you'd like to check that out:

And this site has some stats; here is the Bloomington Jefferson page:

Much appreciated guidance ARM.

Congrats LU on an excellent weekend. Two very competitive games yielding a 4-3 win and a 1-1 OT tie. Thrilling finish with a great centering pass after a streak down the wing by West and one timer top shelf by Wickenheiser.

Athough Lindenwood let a 3-1 lead get away at the end of the game, it was good to see them stick with it to get another goal for the win. There was some good goaltending in this series, but Lindenwood has to continue working on not taking so many penalties and staying out of the box. Looked like LU might have lost another goaltender to injury again at the end when one of Lindenwood's players cross checked an RIT player into Lindenwood's own goaltender. Got to start using their heads too!

Discipline and taking too many lazy penalties (tripping, hooking, etc) has been a problem in past games for LU, also I believe RIT is a highly penalized team too. Both teams took a lot of penalties today but a number of them shouldn't have been called! I know it's women's hockey and there's no checking, but some body contact in inevitable in hockey... Officials have to let the teams play, two girls battling for the puck and one falls shouldn't be called body checking.

I must agree with you regarding the penalties. The level of contact was not excessive for the most part but by the penalties you would think it was a knock down drag out affair. The referees could have lightened up on the calls and matched the level of contact called elsewhere.

There is a difference between playing hard and playing with a "chip on the shoulder" ..have personal knowledge that the Lindenwood ladies look like they are playing tough hockey but they in fact are very bitter..chirping opponents and taking those penalties..to quote a few opponents "they are embarrassing themselves with the screaming" ..If their coach would settle them down and get them to focus their energy into the game instead of focusing on a grudge, they could possibly be much more productive

Congratulations to Lindenwood's goaltender Nicole Hensley for receiving the CHA Rookie of the Week Award and forward Kendra Broad for making the CHA Honor Roll, each for their play last weekend against RIT.

Lindenwood has put together some solid team efforts, including their 3-1 win over PSU today. Nicole Hensley had another great game. Her rebound control has been excellent and she is has been solid in every respect. Looking forward to another exciting game tomorrow.

Well, it wasn't pretty today but they kept fighting back and got out of Happy Valley without a loss.

Lindenwood has put together a string of 4 pretty respectable games. They handily outshot Penn State yesterday, however notably a number of the shots were on the second period power plays. You had to know 2 evener calls were coming, then early in the third there they were. Credit for determination in not giving up until the end, another nail biter right through overtime after the tying score with goalie pulled and 42 seconds left. This is what hockey is all about.

And what a fantastic toe save by Hensley from point blank to keep the difference at 1 halfway through the third.
