Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

A particularly strong third period by LU, hitting 2 posts and one off the MSU goalie’s facemask. MSU finished with a 3rd goal with 10 seconds to play.

West score eliminated with the net coming off early in the first. Hensley continues to impress with another outstanding game. LU stayed out of the box while MSU took a number of penalties, hauling down Wickenheiser for penalties on 3 separate occasions including a second penalty break-away.

If LU can match the effort seen in the first half of period 1 and most of period 3 the next game will be a good one.

So what are the predictions for Lindenwood opening up conference play at home against Mercyhurst? Mercyhurst looks pretty strong this year. Hensley has started 5 of 6 games in net so far this year and played in the 6th relieving Fairchild who started. Who will start the two games against Mercyhurst?

Hensley has been outstanding in her games thus far. Fairchild originally sat out due to an injury so she may be still not up to speed. Have to go with Hensley based on play unless an injury was an ongoing factor with Fairchild.

Mercyhurst has been strong and also done well against teams that have played Lindenwood. Despite some great improvements by LU, which will close the gap markedly from last year, I will say Mercyhurst 7-2.

I believe Fairchild has dressed for every game and started one, so I assume she is healthy. Looks like they have dressed all 3 for every game, 2 sophomores and a freshman.

Fairchild started the second game against Wisconsin and played 48 minutes. 9 goals were scored on 41 shots. Hensley played the rest of the game and no more goals were scored. Given Hensley's stellar play I would be surprised if she did not start.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Looks like Hensley got the start last night and depending upon which team's statistics you look at, took 67 or 70 shots, losing 6-1. Still over 90%. In watching webcast, it looks like Lindnewood needs to stay out of the box and play 60 minutes. There was only one even strength goal in the entire game. Mercyhurst looked like the fastest team they have played this year.

Mercyhurst certainly has wheels as well as depth. Another 2 more goals scored against LU on powerplays, this time 5 on 3 for both. Interesting the goal and shot deficiet was nearly the same for Fairchild versus Hensley.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Yes, 6 on 64 shots for Fairchild and 6 on 70 shots for Hensley. Hensley gave up one even strength of the 6, and Fairchild gave up 4 even strength of the 6. Doesn't look like goaltending is an issue. Thoughts on St. Cloud this coming weekend? Looks like West is out as she didn't play on Saturday, which could hurt on the offensive side this weekend if she is still injured.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Heard West will be out a couple of weeks due to injury. She is a great skater with a lot of continuous hustle, so that will hurt. LU has had a field of very strong opponents thus far, so they are hard to gauge playing an opponent closer to their level. They have been able to keep close in period one to some excellent teams. Would have loved to see them play a schedule more like Penn State or RIT. I expect a pretty tight game, maybe a 2 goal difference.

Hensley gave up 2 even strength and a shorty of the 6, and Fairchild gave up 3 even strength and a shorty of the 6.

My bad on misreading the stats. From the stats it looks like they played St. Cloud tough this afternoon, but a 5-3 goal hurt in the 2-0 loss. Hensley's numbers were good with a little over 95% save percentage.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Looks like they had a tougher time with St. Cloud on Saturday with a 7-2 loss. If they don't get a win this coming weekend with Penn State in town, they may not win a game all season.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Neither game had video so it was tough to say how the balance of play was, nor strengths and weaknesses of the last two games against St. Cloud. Not to put any pressure on the next couple of games, but Penn State will likely be the weakest competitor LU will see this season. I'll predict a split.

You'll win a game at some point. You have four with Syracuse, you took them to OT once last year, and you've improved since then. You have both SCSU and MSU at home after having to play them on the road the first time. I don't like your chances against Mercyhurst or North Dakota, but you have at least some chance against everyone else. Play in enough games against teams that you can skate with, and eventually you'll find a way to win.

And to add to that, playing SCSU on the road is different, with the large ice surface a factor.

Lindenwood hits the win column with a very good team effort, outshooting Penn State 37 to 16. I expect Penn State to regroup and come out strong for tomorrow's game.

Based upon the reaction of the Penn State players and fans, it looked like they expected to come in and walk over Lindenwood. They were shell shocked and dejected. Lindenwood appeared happy with the win, but didn't celebrate too much and seemed serious to focus on game two on Saturday knowing that the sweep would not be easy.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Tonight's game was an interesting matchup between two new NCAA programs. Penn State looked a lot like Lindenwood did last year; they weren't as physical, couldn't establish a presence in the offensive zone, dump-and-chase ineffective/getting beat to the puck in all areas of the ice, not much special teams power, etc...

Lindenwood has had a very hard schedule so it has been a bit tough to see their improvement from last season to this season, but a series like this shows the growth. Penn State has a few more wins, but three of those Ws are against Sacred Heart, a team LU swept on the road last season. I expect Penn State to come out hard tomorrow but also expect a sweep for Lindenwood.

Lindenwood has got to stay out of the box. Cost them the 3-2 loss to Penn State tonight.

Congrats to Alison Wickenheiser, Lindenwood Forward, on being named a College Hockey America Player of the Week for this past weekend's games against Penn State and to Nicole Hensley, Lindenwood Goalie, on being named to the College Hockey America Player of the Week Honor Roll for the second time this season for this past weekend's games against Penn State.
