Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Lindenwood had a pretty good weekend, and was definitely in position to take the second game. It is an interesting study in club teams progressing to D1 to contrast Penn State and LU, as well as the alternative approach of RIT. While I would give a slight edge to RIT over both programs I will be very interested in those games. Congrats to Wickenheiser and Hensley for their play and recognition.

Another tough weekend of losses for the Lady Lions v. St. Cloud.

True, tough losses, particularly the second game. Having tied the score with a minute left it was a bitter pill to let one in with 30 seconds to play. On the positive side, that 3-2 game was likely one of their best team games with the shots being even at 41-40. That was a great pass from Wick to West to tie the game. If Lindenwood keeps playing games at that level, the wins will come.

Too bad they didn't play that way on Friday as they had a lot fewer shots as Hensley took 48.

So I'm looking at the WCHA schedules, and I see that Lindenwood is playing 4 games in 5 days against WCHA teams when they host Minnesota State on January 1 & 2 and then North Dakota on January 4 & 5. Is that they only way they could fill out their schedule this season? That's not running the gauntlet; that's putting yourself on the sacrificial alter and praying.

My understanding is that the North Dakota games were scheduled those dates, but then there was difficulty in getting the Minnesota State games scheduled and it turned out those were the only mutual dates they could come up with on the schedule. That will be a brutal 5 days for Lindenwood in terms of competition and stamina.

Lindenwood redeemed themselves today, tieing RIT after losing big to them yesterday. Penalties again was there undoing as the lone goal was a power play goal.

Not to take anything away from the tie, but RIT also had some injuries to battle, and only had 16 skaters on the ice today.

I wasn't at yesterday's game, but I thought Lindenwood played well today. Your goalie made some incredible saves.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Lindenwood had 3 regular starters out of the lineup for this weekend (Post, Captain Lebreau and Redick). Hensley was stellar in the 1-1 tie and earned first star honors in a very entertaining match. RIT really moved the puck well particularly in a well oiled breakout and had great pressure with heavy forechecking and a very effective cycle. Line 1 for LU looked particularly strong, accounting for 19 shots and some great scoring opportunities. Penalties still plagued LU, particularly in the last 2 periods. Only getting scored on once while shorthanded is a big improvement; they added a new combination on penalty killing that seemed much more effective.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Congratulations to Nicole Hensley of Lindenwood for earning the first star of the game in last Sunday's contest against RIT and also being named the CHA Rookie of the Week for her performance against RIT.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

As the end of 2012 approaches, it's reasonable to make a comparison of Lindenwood's first DI year to their second year at this point. The last round of recruiting focused on defense and brought another goaltender; did it make a difference?

Eliminating DIII teams from last year's games at this time, LU played 17 DI teams. The result was 136 goals against, 19 for. This year, also 17 D1 games, 71 goals against, 21 for. The schedules are pretty comparable, with a notable number of top 10 teams, mixed with a few teams further down the ratings. That's an improvement from a minus 7 average goals per game to just under minus three.

While it is often easy to focus on work remaining to be done, the end of the year brings a time to stop smell the roses. The DI women's game is fast paced, highly skilled and requires a depth of talent, coaching and systems play that takes time to develop. LU has come a long way in a short time...keep up the great work.

I haven't looked, but did you do a shots analysis at this point in the season - was wondering if the D or the goaltending had improved more or were the same?

The shot analsyis for Lindenwood is just as pointed as the goals analysis. In the first half of last season, LU had 287 shots for and 992 against, which equates to being outshot by a margin of 3.45 to 1.

The first half of this season (17 D1 games), shots are 394 to 754, which is now a 1.91 to 1 margin.

The slope of the rink is definitely not as steep as last year.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Lindenwood got the offense going a little better against North Dakota, scoring 7 goals in that series and looking better than they did in the series over New Year with Minnesota State. Penalties kill hurt them in the second game against North Dakota, as 4 of North Dakota's goals in the 8-4 loss were power play goals. It is conference play in the CHA for them here on out, so we will see how they settle in beginning with Robert Morris this afternoon.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Congrats to Lindenwood on their first CHA road victory, 5-2 over Robert Morris. Three PP tallies and an empty-netter while shorthanded.

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

That was a big win for the Lindenwood program against the defending CHA champs and the CHA goalie of the year! Congrats to Allysson Arcibal on her CHA player of the week award this week, Kendra Broad and Alison Wickenheiser on two goals each against Robert Morris and Nicole Hensley for a strong performance in net against Robert Morris!

Re: Lindenwood Women's Ice Hockey 2012-13 Season Thread

Lindenwood moved the puck better this last game than any time previously. The defense were not panicking and moved the puck D to D and much smarter out of the zone. Final shots were 35 to 34 in a very competitive game, and likely LU's best third period ever.

Looks like they settled in pretty quickly. Good for them.

Congrats to the Lions and their fans. The quicker new teams can get up to speed and be competitive against everyone the better it is for the sport. They've come a long way in a season and a half.
