Laker Hockey 2009-10

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

I believe they are refering to conference games only. Each game is now worth 3 points. 3 for a straight up win in regulatin or OT and 2 if you win the shootout with 1 point for the shoot out loser.
So there is a potential for 6 points out of a 2 game series? Will there be no more ties?

It is a bit confusing but the 3 points for a regulation or overtime win is for CCHA Conference games only. If you finish the game in a tie it will be 2 points for the shootout winner and 1 point for the shootout loser in CCHA Conference games only. However, for national stats any game that finishes after 65 minutes in a tie will go on record as a tie.

Confused yet? This is the CCHA's way of addressing what many people, including myself, were complaining about the shootout, not as much having it, but rewarding a weekend where you play 130 minutes of even hockey, win both shootouts, and it is worth as many points if you swept a team 6-0, 6-0. Now that scenario happens you will get 6 points for the sweep in regulation, 4 points if you win two games in a shootout, 2 points if you lose two games in a shootout (as good as two ties) and 0 points if you get swept. However nationally you get two shootout wins in league play, it goes on your stats as two ties.

Ok now I just confused myself again. Personally I hate the shootouts and think they shouldn't be in college hockey. The other conferences are not buying into it either, but is seems everyone else is. Nothing more than a gimmick, save the skills competitions for practice and All-Star games.

Good weekend for the Lakers, solid play all around and things look on the up and up heading into 4 big home contests against Ohio State and Michigan. We will know a lot about this team by the end of the month.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Okay Laker Prof ... that makes sense albeit confusing as heck. So, in what instance to National standings really count? I mean, don't we really just care about conference standings? Or do the National standings come into play during tournament time?

So, if I'm understanding things correctly ... we get 3 points for a win in regulation or overtime ... but if it goes to a shoot out (ahem, help me clear out the cobwebs ... WHEN do we go to a shootout? After one overtime? Two?) then we get 2 points for a shootout win, and one point for a shootout loss. Games will never end in a tie given this scenario, right? Overtime is 20 minutes sudden death, right?

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

The national standings, record, whatever you want to call it comes into play during the NCAA tourney selection process. so in theory, a CCHA team could start out with say, 10 shootout wins in a row in CCHA play....they would be 10-0 in the CCHA standings and 0-0-10 according to the selection committee. screwy huh?
Shootouts are exciting and if the NCAA was considering using the CCHA as a pilot for the whole nation (and then in the next year or so would subsequently mandate that all games go to shootouts after OT) then i have less of a problem with it...however if this is the CCHA being a rogue, and no one else is going to start using shootouts then i say it should be abolished.....I understand both sides of the argument for/against shootouts, what i am most concerned about is having every team/league in the nation using the exact same format to finish a game...whatever that may be.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

And remember, any game that goes into a shootout and ends up with a winner via the shootout will officially go down in the NCAA records as a tie. This way the power index rating will not be affected.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

- I like what Roque is doing on the powerplay, putting a 4th forward (often Acton or Freddy) back on the point, Will got a PP goal tonight to open the scoring. Other than the personnel juggling, the strategy of the Lakers PP has not changed, yet has had fantastic results so far, as the Lakers already have 5 PP goals (and one of the goals Friday was scored at full strength, 2 seconds after Canisius got back to even strength, so for all intents and purposes this was also a PP goal)
I agree it's nice to see the Lakers score on the PP early in the season, but there weren't really enough PP opportunities this weekend to get a good gauge for how much they've improved. For example, they did have about 4 minutes or so of consecutive PP time in the 3rd period Saturday night, including 53 seconds of 5 on 3, and the Lakers did nothing with it and looked very sloppy.
- I'm interested to see what happens with Hobbins, he played D last night and forward tonight...Logic would have it that once Trotman starts playing that Tyson would no longer be in the top 6 D rotation...so Roque is trying to find someplace for him in the lineup, although i don't like the idea of sitting Barczuk (as we did tonight), and the fact that i have always been critical of Hobbins, i cannot argue having him in the lineup (yet lol), as he scored twice this weekend.
They might be trying to shake up Barczuk. He didn't do much in the first 3 games. Could also be he caught the flu from Trotman. I thought Hobbins skated better at forward than the few times I've seen him play there his first two years. I tend to think they will probably play him at forward this season barring any injury problems on D. I don't expect to see him play much D unless we have injuries/illnesses to contend with, and even then Pobur can fill in back there.
- I was glad to see BMW bounce back and get the shutout tonight, after letting in 3 yesterday in under 20 shots. It appears he is going to be our horse between the pipes and a big season from him could propel us up the standings.
Agree. I thought he looked shaky Friday night. The 2nd goal on Friday was pretty soft; he didn't look ready for the shot at all. That goal fired up Canisius and gave them a lot of momentum. He also was having trouble leaving rebounds in juicy spots on Friday. He played much better Saturday and had a couple of big saves to preserve his shutout.
- I would have liked to have seen Trotman play this weekend, assuming he plays next weekend against the Buckeyes i hope he isn't rusty from not seeing any ice this weekend. We will need a solid effort from him if we are going to pick up some Ws next weekend.
I really would liked to have seen him play also. They need his physical presence in front of their own net. Canisius was spending too much uncontested time in front of the Laker net on Friday especially.

Bill,is Campbell coming in next season?
Yes, he has committed (verbally) to play for the Lakers next season. He hasn't actually signed a Letter of Intent yet; the next signing period opens up in early November.

For next season, the Lakers have several new forwards coming in: Campbell (assuming he does sign); Dan Radke, currently playing for Traverse City (NAHL); Kellan Lain, who was supposed to play for the Lakers this season but will play another year in Juniors (for Oakville, OJAHL) once he has healed from his wrist surgery; Kelin Ainsworth, currently playing for Traverse City; and Kyle Jean, currently playing for Traverse City, who was also supposed to play for the Lakers this season but is playing another year in Juniors due to shoulder surgery. They also could have Brett Wall back next season; I'm not sure of their plans for him but he is playing for Alexandria of the NAHL this season.

Recruiting for next season will now focus on finding a couple of Defensmen and a goalie. We really need to find two good D to replace Gysbers and Kaunisto.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Thanks for the update Bill. Seems as if they have a lot of hope riding on the Traverse City team.

I think Ainsworth was thinking about playing in the USHL this season, but Anthony Palumbo (TC coach) probably talked him into playing there instead. He played in the SIJHL last season. TC has Anthony Palumbo as head coach and Mike Mattuecci as assistant coach, both former Lakers. Between those two guys and the proximity of TC to the Soo, they can easily keep tabs on how our recruits are doing.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Congrats to Domenic Monardo who won CCHA Rookie of the week.

Hope Pink in the Rink is a big success. Lakers definitely need at least a split this weekend with Michigan coming in next weekend.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

As long as you aren't wearing an NMU jersey, you should be okay.

The jersey will re-appear this weekend. I was hoping to watch the NMU games while I'm at the arena, which is why I'm asking.

Edit: They have a really strong connection. Should make it easy to listen to the NMU game and watch the Laker game. Great success.

Big win for the Lakers, and in a one goal game. They lost far too many of those last season.

Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10

Wow, what an exciting win. Nice to win a one goal game for once. What a shot by Rick with 20 seconds left to win the game, though the Buckeyes nearly tied it. Lakers recovered very nicely on a very soft goal Mahoney-Wilson let in at the near end of the 2nd period. Beamer played great despite the softie and the PK looked pretty good.'

Lakers must be ready tomorrow night. OSU is probably going to play mad and aggressive right out of the gate.
