Re: Laker Hockey 2009-10
Well the Lakers took care of business and got the sweep at home tonight, winning a rather uneventful game at taffy. Some of my thoughts for the weekend:
- Monardo continued his blazing start, picking up another assist tonight..he put up some excellent numbers in juniors and apparently hasn't been fazed by the jump up in the level of competition, as he is tied for 10 in the nation in scoring
- I like what Roque is doing on the powerplay, putting a 4th forward (often Acton or Freddy) back on the point, Will got a PP goal tonight to open the scoring. Other than the personnel juggling, the strategy of the Lakers PP has not changed, yet has had fantastic results so far, as the Lakers already have 5 PP goals (and one of the goals Friday was scored at full strength, 2 seconds after Canisius got back to even strength, so for all intents and purposes this was also a PP goal)
- I'm interested to see what happens with Hobbins, he played D last night and forward tonight...Logic would have it that once Trotman starts playing that Tyson would no longer be in the top 6 D rotation...so Roque is trying to find someplace for him in the lineup, although i don't like the idea of sitting Barczuk (as we did tonight), and the fact that i have always been critical of Hobbins, i cannot argue having him in the lineup (yet lol), as he scored twice this weekend.
- I was glad to see BMW bounce back and get the shutout tonight, after letting in 3 yesterday in under 20 shots. It appears he is going to be our horse between the pipes and a big season from him could propel us up the standings.
- I was impressed by the play of Kyle Pobur tonight, who dressed as our 6th defenseman tonight. There were multiple shifts where he displayed his grittiness and work ethic and made some nice plays. I am by no means saying that he should dress for us every night, or even often..although performances like his tonight gives me peace of mind that if one of our regular d man is letting their game slip, they do have a solid threat of being replaced by a serviceable backup...this also applies to the case of an injury
- I would have liked to have seen Trotman play this weekend, assuming he plays next weekend against the Buckeyes i hope he isn't rusty from not seeing any ice this weekend. We will need a solid effort from him if we are going to pick up some Ws next weekend.
All in all so far this season the Lakers have at different times displayed all of the things that they will need to be successful season. The power play has been good, BMW has had a couple very good games, the freshmen have been contributing, the team appears to be conditioned, and the Lakers have shown very impressive depth in the scoring department, as 9 players already have at least 3 points...If we can put all of this together next weekend we should take at least one win against Ohio State, which would be a great start to the CCHA season.
