L V C Hockey Program Is Over

Re: L V C Hockey Program Is Over

To be precise, Union began playing up when the DI ECAC offered them membership for the '91-'92 season. And it's worth noting that they made the transition with seemingly omnipresent forums favorite Bruce Delventhal at the helm ;)

Ahh, good ole, Brucey, often able to manipulate himself into a position to make a statement, just never able to pull it off – some can “dazzle them with brilliance”, Brucey just “baffles them with BS”.

Re: L V C Hockey Program Is Over

The school is still a DIII institution, and they have a self imposed no scholarship policy for their hockey program.

They don't really have a choice so long as they remain a D-III institution, though, do they? They're not among the grandfathered schools like RPI and St. Lawrence.

Actually, it was my understanding that they moved up before those rules went into effect, but self-imposed the no-scholarships policy. Since DIII no longer allows any new scholarships, they have no choice in the matter. But the fact that they have none now was the result of their decision.

Union went Division I long before the new rules (which were just 2-3 years ago) went into affect. So, they are one of the grandfathered schools.

For whatever reason, Union decided not to offer scholarships despite moving up to D1.

Re: L V C Hockey Program Is Over

Which makes Union's season this year even more impressive.

It also allows people to raise their eyebrows towards them in regard to how they're getting kids to commit there. They're the D-I hockey team I had in mind after the Geneseo/Buffalo State mess blew up.

Maybe I'm being oblivious but if the no scholarships rule was self-imposed...Couldn't they just change or would the NCAA need to be notified etc?

DIII agreed to grandfather in existing scholarships. If a team had 4 full-rides available at the time, 4 full-rides is all they can give. If a team had 10 full-rides, they can still give up to (and no more than) 10 full-rides. If a team had 0 scholarships offered at the time, they have nothing to offer.

Ahh gotcha. Thanks.

Are you sure? I don't know. That's why I'm asking.

It's just that I never saw it worded like this. But then, I never saw the details of that particular NCAA legislation either.

Re: L V C Hockey Program Is Over

LVC has the talent to compete in NCAA D3. The players were recruited with high expectations and promises that it would be a ‘building’ year. Most players had other D3 offers but choose LVC because they wanted to make a difference for the struggling hockey team. They have talent and heart! The problem arises when recruits over several years were drawn in with the ‘building year’ speech. Once on the team they were met with an incompetent coaching staff that, internally, pitted the players against each other. Not just in the competitive nature of the game, both on and off the ice. Talented players were sitting out, lines were continually changed, and turmoil was created. The heart of these players kept them competitive while holding their heads high. The program was running into the ground. The administration ignored and snubbed the team ….until now, when LVC NCAA hockey is too far gone. LVC will allegedly be playing D1 club. A league or schedule has not been announced. They will be required to play at least one preliminary year opting out of any playoffs. In a sense, these talented players will be playing MENS HOCKEY until further notice or until LVC administration can rid the school of ice hockey. These players deserve more than the hand they were dealt. It is far too late to ‘save LVC hockey’, the decision is in stone. These players need other hockey teams where they can bring their heart and talent. If there are teams still needing players at this late stage, I would encourage them to contact the players. They will not be disappointed in the competitive nature and spirit the players can bring to any team.

Agreed. The players are the most affected in this. The school essentially doesn't lose anything since it will still see itself as fielding a men's ice hockey team.

Can someone refresh me on the rules for when this happens. Are the players allowed to transfer within their conference/DIII without having to sit out?

If I am correct the players are eligible to play immediately because they are transferring from a school (LVC) that does not have NCAA hockey.

When a school no longer has a program trasfer rules relating to that program no longer apply.

In D-III you can play right away after transferring, for the most part. (NCHA requires you to sit out a semester I believe?)

That is true, even for Division I. The NCAA waives all those restrictions in cases like this.

As to particular conferences like the NCHA, I would hope they too would waive any restrictions in cases like this.

The contemporary USCHO article (from 2004) disagrees with you:

http://www.uscho.com/news/college-hockey/id,7693/ScholarshipsWillContinueForPlayUpSchools.html

One school that did not vote for the amendment was Union,

...

Union moved its hockey program to Division I in 1991, after the 1982-83 waiver, and therefore, unlike the other D-III schools that play in the ECAC, has never been allowed to grant athletic scholarships.

According to that article, the 2004 decision only extended the wavier that was already in place for those eight (now seven) institutions who were originally grandfathered in the 80s, when Union hockey was still D-III.

For the record, can you substantiate your claims above with hard evidence?

Thanks to all. That's what I thought, but just wanted to confirm.
