Japan hit by 8.9 Magnitude Quake, Tsunami Warnings In Effect

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 Magnitude Quake, Tsunami Warnings In Effect

Interesting note, CNN had a reporter from Tokyo who was watching a parliament session when a Earthquake warning for a "large" quake flashed on screen. Roughly 30 seconds later....the 8.9 quake hit. Earthquake warnings are relatively new, but this one seemed to work, though 30 seconds of warning for a massive earthquake isnt much.

Just so long as we don't get a movie about this as bad as Twister, I'll be fine...

Seriously, though, best wishes towards those in the far east affected. At least one of my friends and his wife in Japan are fine.

This.

I actually kinda liked Twister. Good disaster flick. Didn't pretend to be vying for an Oscar outside of the minor CGI awards.

All that beer... gone...

Is that Sapporo?

...and nuclear power gets set back another 50 years in this country thanks to a new round of NIMBYism this will spark. Great...

While I feel for the people that will get melted if it goes really badly, this is also my main concern, I admit.

Apparently my former roommate was giving a presentation in Tokyo on the 20th floor of a highrise, but they made it through and out OK. Everything's pretty much at a standstill in the city now though.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 Magnitude Quake, Tsunami Warnings In Effect

You're probably right, but I think it's the square of the distance part that throws people off. That essentially means that for the energy of a wave to be halved, it doesn't have to go double the distance but 4 times the distance, right?

No, it means that in double the distance, the energy drops by a factor of four.

Unless the nuclear plants stayed on through the tsunami and setup a clean radioactive shield to protect the land around them, NIMBY's were going to point at this no matter what, especially with American media derp making usual procedures sound like Chernobyl Mk.2

Edit: National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology says the quake shifted the earth's axis by 10".

Well then, Christ, I don't know. Apparently I learned less in that class than I thought I did (which is saying something, considering everyone knew it was a joke of a class to begin with anyway).

It does sound like there has been some damage at selected locations on our west coast. Nothing like the devestation in Japan though.

Some of that film showing the water- oh, my gosh. Stunning how far inland, what it's going over, and what is being dragged along.

If people are that stupid, let 'em wash out to sea.

Seriously, there are people in Japan and the Pacific who had no choice here, and this numbnuts goes out there to take a few pictures.
