Japan hit by 8.9 Magnitude Quake, Tsunami Warnings In Effect

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 Magnitude Quake, Tsunami Warnings In Effect

I keep reminding myself that 120,000 plus people died in Indonesia 5 years ago. Shows what living in a postindustrialized country (that is prepared for these sorts of things) will do for you.

Double that. !!!!

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 Magnitude Quake, Tsunami Warnings In Effect

Jeebus. If they're resorting to dropping water on the outside of the reactors they might as well be dumping cement. What the hell is water being dumped from helicopters going to do? Say you are really, really good at aiming and there is no wind. You might get what? 75% of the water on the reactor? You do this once every few minutes? I just can't imagine this doing anything significant. All it does it tell me that the final containment has been probably been breached.

Now I'm totally confused.

How is this possible???

TOKYO (Reuters) – The level of radiation detected at the Tokyo Electric Power Co Fukushima plant has fallen steadily over the past 12 hours, an official at Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said on Thursday.

A level of 752 microsieverts per hour was recorded at the plant's main gate at 5 p.m. (0800 GMT) on Wednesday, said the official, Tetsuo Ohmura. The monitoring point was then changed to the plant's west gate and readings were taken every 30 minutes, he said. At 5 a.m. the reading was 338 microsieverts per hour.

That level was still much higher then it should be, but was not dangerous, and that by comparison absorption of a level of 400 was normal from being outside over the course of a year, Ohmura said.

Because the core has catastrophically melted through everything and is on it's way to the center of the earth!!!! Duh.

That's curious. I'm the last person to buy into this kind of garbage, but are we really getting the truth from TEPCO or the Japanese government?

How is this possible???

If most of the ongoing release was from a fire in the spent fuel for reactor 4 and that fire has burned out or been put out, then that might be consistent with falling radiation levels outside the facility.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 Magnitude Quake, Tsunami Warnings In Effect

When this whole incident first happened, I wasn't really too worried. After all, the Japanese Defense Force has all that experience fighting those monsters and everything.

Then I started thinking. Holy crap! They're always getting their butt's kicked and everything ends up destroyed.

I fear this could end badly.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 Magnitude Quake, Tsunami Warnings In Effect

I dont think Katrina even comes close to what is happening over in Japan.

Katrina was a Cat 1 hurricane (in Nawlins) with an engineering failure... a tsunami is a large wall of water moving at the highway speed limit that has a density near to that of concrete. Really, god forbid we see anything like that on either of our coasts... at least with Japan it happens on some occasion. Though, clearly, not to this severity.

That's what she said. (Emphasis hers.)

Just keepin' it classy.

In other news, possibly the most hard-core troll of all time. Yikers.
I thought you had mis-posted this here instead of the Westboro thread.

On the gov't utility telling the truth-- Is there really any way for them to know the real truth of what is going on? (serious question) It seems like what I am reading/hearing there is no way to absolutely tell and there are a lot of folks making educated guesses. If privy to the actual data would they be able to tell with surity or a better educated guess?

Interesting-when I first saw film of the destruction I half expected to be listening to the narration done by Raymond Burr. (this one is for the film buffs on the thread)

In the "geophysicist's nuclear safety Dad" interviews, Mervine has said he's been surprised and disappointed by how tight-lipped TEPCO and the Japanese government have been. As his comments on other issues (such as risks) have seemed well-measured, that lends some credence to the idea that what data there is is not being disseminated quickly or thoroughly.

Some of this may be the inevitable (albeit highly immoral) self-protection by a corporation not wanting to expose itself to liability. It's certainly possible (I'd say understandable) that TEPCO officials made poor decisions or mistakes in dealing with the crisis, and so there's the tendency to CYA.

Not to get too armchair sociologist, but there is also a strong tendency in Japanese culture to shape truth to the outcome desired by the audience. This isn't as cynical as a westerner would judge and it's not simply a matter of "good manners." It's a strong emphasis that the content of the conversation should not be allowed to overwhelm the people having the conversation. This leads to collectively-constructed narratives that don't necessarily pass the "correspondance theory" of truth that's common in the West and, arguably, the core of the scientific mindset. It doesn't seem possible that this could be allowed to hamper public policy on something so vital, but it's certainly happened in the past where Japanese public culture has agreed to "block out," for example, strong evidence of corruption by elected officials.

I'm not all that concerned about tsunamis striking the US coasts (certainly not of the 20ft+ variety). If water is your fear, then you should direct your attention to major hurricanes and their massive storm surge.

And the Japanese scientists speaking with their backs to the camera so you couldn't see they weren't speaking English!

Gojira!

I knew it was only a matter of time before someone caught on.:)

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 Magnitude Quake, Tsunami Warnings In Effect

Perhaps a little good news.

Radiation levels dropped a little on Thursday at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant after a water injection by pump trucks.

In a news conference early Friday, Tokyo Electric Power Company says the radiation levels at the west gate of the power plant was down by nearly 20 points to 292 microsieverts per hour at 8.40 PM on Thursday.

The figures follow an hour-long operation by police and Self-Defense Forces to inject water from pump trucks into the No. 3 reactor building. It's possible the level of pool water used for cooling nuclear fuel was reduced.

At 11 PM the radiation level dropped again to 289 microsieverts per hour.

I haven't seen an update but this morning they were saying they were "close" to restoring power. That would enable them to use the pumps (if they are operational) to move water back over the rods.

Re: Japan hit by 8.9 Magnitude Quake, Tsunami Warnings In Effect

On a more positive note- a saki to the engineers and architects who designed some of the buildings.

Remember some of the footage of the tsunami? A lot I saw was from an elevated location in a building. This building first survived a major earthquake, and THEN survived a pretty punishing tsunami. Thus saving countless lives.

Darned impressive, if but a minor silver lining.
When you having a drink wit dem, ask those dezine geniuses how leeving da back up deisel generators outside there beuatiful strong billdings worked out pour dem, eh.
