Jack Parker To Announce Retirement Monday, Really.

Re: Jack Parker To Announce Retirement Monday, Really.

I guess watching Lowell win the HE Regular Season Title was too much for Jack..

Re: Jack Parker To Announce Retirement Monday, Really.

I vaguely remember Jack as a player for BU, but I have vivid memories of Jack as a coach. From his stick throwing days in the '70's (I was there for one, there had to be others) through to the improbable championship in '09, Jack was a master. Frankly, I always thought that Jack was the guy other coaches aspired to be. I know it might be perceived by many that Jack is going out on a bad note, on and off the ice, but for a long time he was the best. Good luck and good sailing Jack. You'll be missed.

With the singular exception of this message board, Jack Parker has earned the respect of the hockey community at all levels, NHL included.
Don't let trolls color your opinion of this board, I believe that the vast majority of posters have respect for Jack Parker.

Re: Jack Parker To Announce Retirement Monday, Really.

Most older coaches usually leave the job not on their own terms. We went through that at Yale after a decade of denial. Be happy that Coach Parker continued to produce at a high level for your team in the recent past. I am leaving a similarly high pressure position after only 31 years, I do not know how someone could sustain it for forty. Good luck and good health to the Coach.

Re: Jack Parker To Announce Retirement Monday, Really.

The battles with Parkers late 80 and early 90 teams were simply classics. What a rivalry between Maine and BU in that period. Simply all out wars of attrition. His games at Alfond throwing sticks and water bottles onto the ice and anything else that wasn't nailed down cannot ever be forgotten. You cant say that man didnt have a will to win. I remember the game or games when the crowd at Alfond had JackPa masks on sticks held in front of their own face...just hilarious. Thats when going to a game was an event, a happening. But, everything good must come to an end and I wish old crusty Jack the best in retirement and hope he continues coming to Maine to sail. As the old song goes, "hit the road Jack, and dontchya come .....well, scratch that part...and come on back and keep following the game you love.

As an addendum to my my previous post, I will call out Parker for bad form if he announces his retirement just before the playoffs. He is sending the worst message to a team downwardly spiraling. He could have waited until after the last loss at least. Very unfair to the team.

If I know some of the folks on this board, the "Fire Jack Parker" thread should go up any day now.

I couldn't disagree more. The team has won 4 of 5, finished as the third seed, and has more life in them than they have had at any point since their 10-5 start. There are so many factors that play into this type of decision. I can't imagine that there are players that think they played so poorly they caused him to retire. If that's what they think, well, after 40 years, some team had to be his last. And most people that "go out on top" don't actually decide to until they are "on top". I respect Jack's desire to announce now. He didn't want a farewell tour, but I don't fault him for wanting at least one final goodbye in his home arena. He almost didn't get that.

I bet York retires after he gets his 1,000th win. He's so close, but now that Parker won't be able to catch him for most overall wins, I wouldn't be surprised if he shuts it down within 3 years.

I dont think that will even enter Jerry's mind when he's thinking about whether its time. This sux not only because the loss of entertainment value but more seriously the rivalry will never ever be the same and that depresses me. College Hockey has suffered a big loss

you realize they have won four of their last five and finished 3rd in hea, 2 pts out of first (the closest they've been in many days...)?

Don't feel bad he will see the BiG light soon enough. ;)

I have been more focused more on the pairwise standings spiral than the standings of the conference, on that I stand corrected. I still don't believe he should announce now. Maybe he is trying to give the the team the "Gipper" edge, good luck with that.

Is it better to announce his retirement on his terms or the AD?

Re: Jack Parker To Announce Retirement Monday, Really.

I'll echo allbear. Any fan that hated him would have loved to have him coaching their team. A good friend told me about meeting Jack at their yacht club and what a nice, down to earth guy he is. Since I only knew the hockey coach, it seemed a little incongruous, but made sense when I really thought about his overall success. Enjoy retirement, Jack, and come sailing up here in Maine. Bring your wallet and some friends!

And announcing his retirement before the tourneys could prove to be a stroke of genius - giving his boys that "win one for the Gipper" motivation to really get after it the next several weeks.

Happen to agree. Not sure why this didn't happen after the season was officially over, but whatever.
