Jack Parker To Announce Retirement Monday, Really.

Re: Jack Parker To Announce Retirement Monday, Really.

This just seems ... wrong. Jack has been at BU for 40 years, and if he retires after this year, it'll be like he ends on a whimper (4th place in the Beanpot? That's not how he should be shown the door). I hope he announces that next season will be his final season so he can make his final tour of Hockey East, have 'Jack Parker's final Beanpot', etc. While I've enjoyed BC's recent success at Parker's expense, this isn't how I'd want him to retire. Seemingly pushed out the door. If he (or someone in his immediate family) has a medical issue, I understand, but it seems anti-climactic for someone who is a hockey institution.

Knowing Jack a little bit, I can't imagine he would want a farewell tour. I think he knows the time is right, and leaving at this point gives BU plenty of time to find the right replacement for him in order to ensure this program gets back to where he needs to be. At least BU has played well in the last few weeks and is showing some heart on the ice. This is much more what I'd expect from him, rather than a prolongued goodbye.

40 years of coaching..wow. Whoever replaces him is going to have some HUGE shoes to fill.

Is it out of the question to speculate that he could always do a "farewell tour" next season, by attending a BU away game at each of the (current) HE rinks? I could see something like that happening, where he is honored in some fashion between periods. Love him or hate him, he is/will be a legend long after he is gone, and I suspect there is more than a little grudging respect of the coach among Hockey East fandom.

Re: Jack Parker To Announce Retirement Monday, Really.

This is absolutely terrible news. Jack Parker has done so much for BC hockey over the last 15 years and it is tragic that he is leaving. Hopefully his successor can keep up his legacy of abuse of officials, choking in big games, ending the season in February, bringing in questionable students who don't earn a single grade over their tenure at the school, allowing hot tubs in dorm rooms, and covering up felonies. Thank you JackPa for bringing your "school" the respect it deserves. 40 MORE YEARS!

Just sit back and realize that you will never accomplish 1/100th of the success he has achieved...when you retire, will anybody care? I doubt it.

Yes, it is. "Retirement" means retirement...at the END of this season.

Now that many of us have gotten what we felt is what we wanted (not in a malicious way, but just because we felt it would be in the best interests of the program), it is time to show some class, cool it with the wise-a** remarks (myself included) and just sit back and enjoy this post-season. Regardless of the most recent few seasons, the guy is a legend and has continued on the legacy that was begun in the Jack Kelley era. We should all be appreciative of the special moments that we have all witnessed/experienced over the last 40 years. I wish him the best of health and happiness in retirement. I'm sure it won't take very long for the speculation to begin on his replacement...looks like this board might not experience the usual summer "cool off!" :D

Marsh was still a **** good coach, then health issues got in the way of him being able to stay committed.

At the age these guys are, health issues can pop up at any time. Hopefully York can continue to coach for numerous more years. My original statement was by no means a prediction, but rather a passing thought that are these 3, 5, 7 years going to be a changing of the guard from the old timers to the young blood.

Last I checked, Marsh wasn't winning National Championships left and right like York. It's pretty obvious why Parker is leaving and I don't think it's his health.

You're an idiot. Look...many of us enjoy the banter and for the most part it's all in good fun. Some of us like to play "devil's advocate" at times to stimulate the discussion. If you want to be malicious, fine, but you are only making an a** out of yourself.

You missed my point. I didn't suggest he do so as coach -- only as a guest. I think he is due (not owed) some sort of recognition by the teams around the league for his 40 years of coaching. That's a remarkable achievement, to start and finish a long and successful career with one school.

2009 ended in an acceptable fashion, no? I was there in DC and thought it was pretty swell. That said I think his time has come.

Sorry. But no, I don't think he's that kind of person. Regardless of some of the nasty stuff that's unfortunately spewed on this thread (mostly by the BC interlopers), he never did this for the recognition and is in fact quite humble. Everyone has pride but I can assure you that he was not there to get accolades. There would be no reason for him to take a "farewell" tour. And I know you may mean it only with the best intentions and we appreciate that. But it's just not his style. I really think when he goes, he goes and won't look back. I'm serious about that! :)

God Speed Coach Parker. Thank you for what you did for USA Hockey and the college game. I also appreciate what you and your young men have done for autism awareness. Jack Parker...American Hero.

Guys, stop feeding the troll. You know better.

BU Hockey: One Last Run?

Re: Jack Parker To Announce Retirement Monday, Really.

With the singular exception of this message board, Jack Parker has earned the respect of the hockey community at all levels, NHL included. While I think it would have been better for everyone if he retired after '09, BU has been a top program for 40 years.

Even in the last decade, when he was supposedly past it and way out of touch, BU has been a top 5 program by NCAA and conf tournament success:

Championships Last Decade
Nat Conf
BC 3 6
Denver 2 2
Minn 1 3
BU 1 2
Mich St 1 1
MnDul 1 0
Wis 1 0
ND 0 3
Col C 0 3
Mich 0 3
UNH 0 2
Maine 0 2
Cornell 0 3
Yale 0 2
Harvard 0 2
Yale 0 2
Harvard 0 2

(Rough count on Conf Tournament wins. Please correct if I am mistaken.)

Incidentally, only 3 eastern schools/coaches have won a national title since 1990: BC - York 4; BU - Parker 2; Maine - Walsh 2. Yikes!

Parker has been overshadowed (rightly) by York's success in the last decade. But who hasn't? College hockey has had a 1 team top tier for almost 15 years. Like many BU fans, I have come to wish for a new voice to lead the program. I want for BU to be the team that everyone is chasing, in HE and nationally.

The next HC at BU will have tremendous resources available to assist him in building the team. But he will need all of them match the success of JP.
