Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

No. Riley will move on after being a key dedicated player for ND.

The only thing that leads me to believe that Riley may return is the fact that Riley was 17 when he started at ND, he was the youngest player in the NCAA his freshman year. Typically someone is drafted and THEN starts playing college hockey, but Riley (whose birthday is in December) was drafted after his first season at Notre Dame. This means he's a year younger than most third year student-athletes. Therefore, the Red Wings wouldn't really lose anything having him stay another year, compared with other college hockey players that they draft.

Also, he's really starting to play up to his potential, in all facets of the game. It might do him good, developementally, to play one more year if he comes to dominate the NCAA the way he did the OJHL as a junior.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

The Red Wings are notorious for over-ripening their picks. Because Sheahan is so young (he just turned 20 two months ago), the Wings are in no hurry to pick their fruit while it's still growing.

If comparisons are made between Sheahan and Ian Cole or Teddy Ruth, they were both hurt (Cole repeatedly) in their junior years and figured they may as well make money the next time a concussion comes their way. Cole has made good use of his decision.

Back to the present tense...

Do the Irish have it in them to make a 10-game run?

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Some numbers are just plain lucky. Like say 25, as in 25% on the PP. Or, better yet, 100, which stands for the PK %. 2 is also pretty cool. That would stand for the number of goals (including a game winner in there) that Billy Maday had on the night. Of course, 2 could also represent the two, 2-0 shutouts that Steven Summerhays has recorded in his last 2 outings. Or even the 2 stellar saves he had on the same rush, one off the shoulder, the other off his glove. Hell, it could even stand for the 2-minute minor that Anders Lee took (the 2nd such penalty I've seen this season) for playing with a broken stick. Because OSU didn't score, I can chuckle at the fact that Lee didn't even realize the blade came off and he continued to wait for a pass in the slot and skated for about 15 seconds with a twig. Could you imagine him winding up for a one-timer... Either way you add it all up, it totals a great effort from the net on out. Physical. Puck possessing. Smart.

Can we finish this series tomorrow? I have a game Sunday right before a Sunday match up would have to occur and I don't want to have to tell my coach I can't make it.

Oh, and here's a little shout out to Mike Voran's parents. I could've sworn he got the GWG, but apparently he merely set it up. :p

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

They played so well tonight. There were other chances that could have easily made this game 4-0 or 5-0 (I think that's been the story of the second half though).

Unbelievably, during his interview with Darren Prichett, Jeff Jackson seemed to suggest that Summerhays was still not the starter the rest of the way in the playoffs and it would depend on his play this weekend. Fortunately, Summerhays was outstanding for a second game in a row and a win tomorrow might just seal the deal for him, so I guess it doesn't matter.

Anyway, I think a second win tomorrow will give this group the confidence they'll need travelling to Big Rapids next weekend (assuming that's who they play). That will be the mother of all battles for us, so we're going to need to bring everything we have.

Ohio State is now reeling, let's finish them off tomorrow.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

I would bet that Johnson is the starter tonight. Summerhays would be an option for Sunday. If Johnson wins tonight he starts at Ferris on Friday.

What happens if Jackson starts Johnson tomorrow and the Irish lose?

It's understandable that one of our own would wonder about the starter, seeing as how we've witnessed some decisions that have left us scratching our heads, but when two Lake State rooters have the same sorts of questions, it makes me wonder if they know something more about Jackson than we do... But fear not, Irish hockey fans, Summerhays is starting. I don't know why Jackson didn't just come out and say it after indicating it pretty plainly after the game.

They played a solidly smart game last night. One cliché was covered, Summerhays was our best penalty killer. And once again the little things that have too often eluded the team were accomplished, like scoring first. Steven Johns had a laser like focus the whole night. It looked like he had a couple of shifts where he hit every player on the ice but Cal Heeter.

Ohio State looks supremely frustrated. If they harness the frustration, watch out. Another cliché to keep in mind is they will probably be better tonight. Notre Dame will need to match them and improve as well. I don't know about a ten game streak, but I do know it can't happen without at least a 2 game start to it. At some point time will run out for this team to show everyone what they're made of. But it hasn't run out yet. And until it does...

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

IHF, My comments were a little tongue in cheek. I have read the recent comments on this this thread re: Jackson's ability to selct the best starter in goal. He has won the NCAA crown as an asst once, as a head coach twice, and has been to the FF three other times. He is considered one of the best coaches in the college ranks so I figure he knows what he is doing. I know nothing more about Summerhays and Johnson than I read here. One of my ND friends was skeptical about this week but I was confident you would be moving on and you will. Ferris is another story. We'll see. Good luck.

Oh, okay. I was just a day early. Yay for Mike Voran and the series winner. I think it was also nicely fitting that Billy Maday got the insurance goal. And in case you missed it, Notre Dame scored not one, not two, but three (3!) 5 x 5 goals, one of which came off the stick of Anders Lee. He should have had a HT tonight but for the amazing D of OSU.

And once again, Steven Summerhays with the victory. Over the last 3 games Summerhays has played, he has faced 91 shots and made 89 saves. That's a save % of .978. His GA over those 3 games is 0.66. What I wouldn't give to have those numbers hold through next weekend. And beyond.

Tomorrow we get to find out where we go next weekend. I hope it's not Ferris. Or Michigan. Oh--wait... Crap.

Be careful what you wish for. Those could remain his numbers very easily -- all it would take is Jackson giving Johnson the call :p

IHF, JJFP, et al, who do you root for tonight? Northern wins, you go to Ferris. BG pulls off the upset, you go to Ann Arbor. A BG upset would send the Lakers to Kalamazoo instead of Ann Arbor.

Eesh. That's a conundrum. I think FSU is more easily controllable...IF Notre Dame could score first. They play such a tight trap and clog up the shooting lanes which frustrates a more skilled team and the more skilled team ends up waaaay off their game (taking ill-advised shots, taking penalties, crappy passes, etc.)

Michigan has much more talent and the better playoff coach, but ND plays better against their style. It's more "pure" hockey, but their talent and speed (and the fact that I firmly believe Shawn Hunwick sold his soul to the devil) is such that they sometimes swarm and overwhelm opponents--even well-matched opponents.

Today, I say Ferris (whose students will be on break). Ask again tomorrow and I'll likely change my mind (although I believe Michigan returns from spring break today).

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

Congrats on your series victory your guys played hard and earned the bounces they got on 2 of the goals they scored. Good Luck next weekend where ever you play.

I want to play someone we can beat. I don't want to play someone who can beat us. Unfortunately, there are 57 NCAA teams that seem to fit both descriptions. 58 if you count beating yourselves.

We're 4-0 against RPI, BU, BC and Minnesota. Every other team we've played has beaten us at least once except Northern who we tied twice. We've beaten all but two other teams we've played at least once. One of those teams is virtually certain to make the NCAAs, the other won't even get a spot in their own conference tournament. I've never seen a team with a personality as split as this one has.

If the team takes the ice in Ann Arbor or Big Rapids with the same confidence they took the ice with in Minneapolis or against BC they can win. We've seen all too often this season what happens when they don't. I'll admit I didn't expect the team to play the way they have over the last 4 games. I'm glad I was quite wrong.

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

The league always hopes to have Michigan and MSU at the Joe to have a big crowd. I doubt very much that MSU will get by Miami. Will this be the first year ever with no Michigan and no MSU at the CCHA championship? Let's see who the refs are going to be.:)

Re: Irish Hockey: Straight Inta Compton

We're playing MICHIGAN next week, YEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAWW!!!!!!!!

That's all.

The Irish need to win two out of three at Yost, one of the hardest places to play in the nation, against college hockey's hottest team. Yet, I'm excited about about it too. Weird.
