Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

Let us know your seat location and we'll let you know ours, that way you can look for a seat and meet the poster in it. :p Of course, don't forget the fan fest (free food and booze) at the RenCen after the games Friday.

Please elaborate!! Dad and I will be there thanks to some wonderful, helpful, anonymous hockey players on our fabulous team! :)

Hi Everyone!!

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

Couple tidbits.

Coach Jackson must be sooooo relieved that the big bad OHL "ran out of time" on their defamation lawsuit from way-back-when. It would appear that the OHL and their lawyers are about as powerful and scary as the Canadian military. Speaks volumes of the lack of validity in their stance and the actual validity in Coach Jackson's.

Some posters in Miami's thread appear to be assuming they will be meeting Michigan in a Saturday game. Now if they assume it is for the consolation game, I guess that's okay.

It seems as if all of us are in section 123.

Stop by my seat in row 11 if you want to know where the Saturday ND fan lunch gathering will be. We're leaning towards Niki's in Greektown. (Thanks, Sugarisland)

Craig P. posted this link over at NDNation. Of the 1,179,648 permutations possible in the conference tourneys, 99.9962% of them have Notre Dame in the NCAAs.

As Homer Simpson said when Krusty The Clown threatened to spit in every 50th Krusty-burger when he unfortunately gave away a free one for every American Gold Medal during the 1984 Olympics (boycotted by virtually every one of the powerful Soviet era Eastern European countries): "I like those odds!"

Huge congrats to T.J. Tynan for the ROTY, Sean Lorenz for Defensive Dman, and Coach Jackson for COTY. While I would have voted for Coach Blashill for COTY, I fully understand the choice the voters made. Let's keep the good news coming this weekend!

Congrats are in order.

Irish Eyes are Smiling............................................................for the BB team.............................The pressure is off says B. Ryan....................."I think we are pretty comfortable right now."........Miami 4- ND 0 after 1..........Hope he doesn't get anymore comfortable.

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

Well the matchup many people anticipated is going to happen. At 3:30. Eesh. That was ugly. At least Michigan looked good getting smoked by WMU. We just got smoked. To a man that was...what's the word I'm searching for...yucky. Yeah. Yucky. What are the odds that ND puts together 2 yucky games in a row? What are the odds that Michigan loses 2 in row at the Joe?

It was nice to see Ian Cole's dad, Erik Condra's dad and Coach Schafer. Just wish the team could've put on a better showing.

And what happened to the free food and booze at the fan fest?!

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

All I know is that I pray to God that they win tomorrow otherwise that might be it for me on road trips. The only other time that I have hit the road to see our guys play was when we lost to the Beavers back in the NCAA Regionals. I'm starting to think that I bring some sort of weird vudo when I am around this team on the road. Hopefully it won't come to that

It's moot now, but that 99.9962% was weighted by the KRACH probability of every result of every scenario (modulo the fact that KRACH doesn't really account for ties in a predictive sense). The percentage of permutations that had us out was actually a little higher than that, but it involved several very unlikely results.

As it was, we were already in the tournament at the end of the night Thursday, as every scenario where we were eliminated required UAA to beat CC. Unfortunately, ND played today like they knew that.

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

{sigh}

I'm home now after a monumentally disappointing weekend. No free food. No free booze. Not a whole lot of fans at the "fan fest." No team-centric informational placards. No ND win.

I will add though that it was nice to see Justin White's dad (along with the other aforementioned parents). I blame Whitey for having to now pay for the booze. :p ;)

On the drive home, I did my bracket. Etched in pencil, I have:

Bridgeport...Yale-AFA and Michigan-UNO
Manchester...Miami-UNH and DU-WMU
Green Bay...NoDak-RPI and Union-UMD
St. Louis...BC-CC and MC-ND

Selection show is in a matter of hours.

Thinking about this weekend I realized that ND's current roster has only 5 players dressed (five!) who had ever been on ice such as JLA before while going this deep in the playoffs. Each time ND has had a perfect weekend in Detroit, they have gacked it up in the regionals. When they laid 2 eggs in Motown, they played for the NC.

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

If the committee is worried about attendance in St. Louis (which they will be) and doesn't think we can get people in the seats (I don't think we can), then we are likely to end up in Manchester.

This is my current prediction. I put Miami in St. Louis because they're a drive there whereas North Dakota and BC are a flight.
Bridgeport
1. Yale
7. Denver
10. Western Michigan
16. Air Force

Manchester
2. North Dakota
6. Merrimack
11. Notre Dame
13. New Hampshire

Green Bay
3. Boston College
8. Union
9. Minnesota-Duluth
15. Rensselaer

St. Louis
4. Miami
5. Michigan
12. Nebraska-Omaha
14. Colorado College

Thtas actually a nice set of brackets. I doubt it happens, but it seems to work and balance all four. The Manchester bracket would be brutal

I hate when I am wrong. Manchester is the absolute worst place for ND to have gone as far as my travel plans go.

Agreed! ND/Miami carpool? LOL. And then if we cheered for each other... we would almost be heard in the arena!!! Seriously though, If I had to guess I'd say Notre Dame has a fairly large east coast presence, correct?

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

So I see we got bumped to the ESPN Syndication for our first game 730 on Saturday night. When someone finds out if (and for some reason I feel that is a big if) and what station is gonna show it, please pass the news along, although I am preparing to have to sit in from of my computer for 2 1/2 hours to watch it on ESPN3

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

Kind of answered my own question as it looks like it will be taped delayed at 11:30 EST on ESPNU but I would still like to watch it live somewhere other than at a computer screen

I think the eggs laid this time around came from much bigger chickens. I noted some of my observed contrasts in the 2008 team and this one over in the regional thread. That said, I also think this team is capable of beating anyone they'll face in Manchester. At the risk of being Mr. Obvious, we'll have to see a major upgrade in our play to do so.

As for the viewing party 1000 miles away Friday...

we're tuning in and he's getting an education. In more ways than one.

The daughter's fiancé did not get much of an education. How much instruction could I give when I spent the better part of the game muttering and burying my head in my hands?

The fairly large east coast presence is in part a product of our Subway alums, and generally they came about their affinity for the university via the football program. Basketball games at MSG can be well attended by ND fans, but a local team will still outdraw us. The hockey team has yet to develop a true "national" following, but it is growing, and likely stronger than our history in the sport would otherwise indicate. That said, while we'll have fans there, I don't look for our crowd to be particularly large. Larger I would assume than Miami's, but dwarfed by by either of the "local" teams.

Re: Irish hockey '10-11-Everyone bets on a sure thing, but it takes guts not to fold.

I had seriously considered driving out for this weekend's games, but in the end, couldn't bring myself to cancel one of my classes and drive 32 hours RT (as opposed to paying $600 for a RT flight...). I'll save myself for the FF. ;) I wonder if I could cajole Garrett Regan's dad to send a bus out to pick all of us ND fans up... :D

While the last several years has proven that anything can happen and anyone can make it to the FF, it's never easy.

Miami is 23-9-6 thus far. Bryan Paulazzo leads the freshmen with 10 points. Reilly Smith leads sophomores with 54, Alden Hirschfeld leads juniors with 25 and Andy Miele is the senior with 71 points, leading everyone in the nation. They have 15 upperclassmen, 7 draft picks, 14 players in double digits and 11 with at least one PPG. Carter Camper leads their man-up scorers with 9 PPG's.

Merrimack is 25-9-4 for a winning % of .711 to lead the 4 teams here. Their freshmen are led by Mike Collins with 10 points. Their leading sophomore scorer is Stephane DaCosta with 44. Junior Ryan Flanigan has 32 and senior Chris Barton has 39. Barton is a question mark as he has missed the last few games with an injury. MC also has 15 upperclassmen. They have 2 draft picks, 15 players in double digits and 10 players with at least one PPG, led by Joe Cucci who has 10 of those.

ND is 23-13-5 as they head east. T.J. Tynan leads the entire rookie nation with 52 points. In fact, there are only 6 other players total in the country who have scored more than he has. Riley Sheahan leads sophomores with 20 points. Billy Maday leads the junior class with 24 and Ryan Guentzel leads seniors with 37. ND has 10 upperclassmen, 10 draft picks and 17 players in double digits. They have 10 guys who've scored at least one PPG, led by Anders Lee and Jeff Costello, each with 6.

UNH is 21-10-6. Freshman Kevin Goumas has 16 points, sophomore John Henrion has 19. Steve Moses leads the juniors with 26 points, while their top senior is Paul Thompson with 52 points. They have 13 upperclassmen, 3 draft picks and 12 skaters in double digits. UNH has 12 players who've registered PPG's. Thompson leads the quartet of teams at this regional with 12 PPG's.

Miami will probably split time in net between Connor Knapp (2.03, .909) and Cody Reichard (2.05, .911). They average 3.82 GF/game while giving up 2.16 GA.

MC's Joe Cannata will be in net. He's got a GA of 2.44 and a save % of .911. They average 3.68 GF and give up 2.45 GA.

ND will go with Mike Johnson (assuming he's healthy). He's got a GA of 2.62 and a save % of .903. ND averages 3.46 GF while giving up 2.76 GA.

UNH should go with Matt DiGirolamo. His GA is 2.49 while his save % is .921. UNH averages 3.43 GF and gives up 2.57 GA.

Matthew 17:20 is one of my favorites. "...I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."
