Iowa State pursuing D1 Hockey

Re: Iowa State pursuing D1 Hockey

They won the B1G in gymnastics and women's indoor track. They're good at women's basketball and wrestling too. Baseball is decent.

Weren't there some people here saying UNO should join the BTHC because it's within the same University of Nebraska system? I still can't believe that was actually brought up as a plausible idea.

Under that logic, Minnesota-Duluth should have gone to the BTHC as well.

Re: Iowa State pursuing D1 Hockey

Thanks, I was doing a little tongue in cheek thing though...outside of football...is Nebraska good at anything?

women's volleyball is clearly #2. Baseball was decent for awhile but that's hit the skids big time. oh, they have several national titles in women's bowling! I'm sure that packs 'em in...

Unless of course the schools merge.

Re: Iowa State pursuing D1 Hockey

Don't forget Crookston as well. Oh, never mind, they had to drop their program to Club level.....
Hell, I was trying to just count the real programs here. If we're going to include Crookston, then we might as well have all of the Wisconsin schools as well. :p

Wouldn't Barry Alverez just love that?? :D

At which point the more likely result is the end of hockey at UNO.

Wasn't there a proposal to change the nickname to the "Husker mavericks"?

I don't trust any sport where Maryland-Eastern Shore is a powerhouse.

Re: Iowa State pursuing D1 Hockey

With 24 league games its starting to look like most teams in the NCHC will be traveling significantly less than in the current WCHA and the travel budgets should decrease. WMU may take 4 RT flights or less

My money is on Western being the first to drop, either from budget reasons or they get tired of being the bottom feeder. Miami will be next, mainly budget in their case as you can add roughly an hour to most of the Western times to figure out Miami's trips. If Western plans on taking a bus for all those 11 hr trips, good luck with recruiting. What 20 year old kid wants to spend two full days round trip on a bus for most road trips?
Ryan J

Western's Road Trips
Denver - (18 hrs) flight
CC - (18 hrs) flight
UND - (15 hrs) flight
---
SCSU - (11 hrs) flight maybe
UMD - (11 hrs) flight maybe
UNO - (10 hrs) flight maybe
---
Miami - (4 hrs) BUS

vs

Alaska-A (forever) flight w/ budget assistance
Alaska-F (forever) flight w/ budget assistance
Bemidji (14 hrs) flight
----
Mankato (10 hrs) flight maybe
MTU (10 hrs) flight maybe
----
NMU (8 hrs) BUS
LSSU (6 hrs) BUS
BGSU (3 hrs) BUS
Ferris (2 hrs) BUS

Any kid who wants to play in the QMJHL, OHL, or WHL.

And as far as I knew, Western bussed to Omaha too. So 11 hour bus rides are not out of the question.

Only to the extent one Regent thought it up. UN-Kearney was going to be the "Husker-Lopers" as well. I don't know if it was ever actually proposed, or if the one guy was just spouting off random thoughts. I know it had no chance in hell of ever actually happening.

Also, the schools are not going to merge. You might see UNMC merge with one or the other rather than being its own separate entity, but I doubt that'll happen either.

Those kids aren't taking classes typically.

Even though it's in Omaha I'd bet it gets merged with Lincoln so they can be reinstated to the AAU.

Re: Iowa State pursuing D1 Hockey

Why would they do that?

To begin with, this extremely hypothetical merger would probably mean the end of the independent UNO athletics department. Consolidation of overlapping or redundant departments would definitely be the order of the day, and that includes athletics. Ice hockey is the only UNO team that Lincoln doesn't already have, and it'd be rather expensive for Lincoln to keep it along (when that money could go into, say, maintaining the Husker football cash cow or keeping Husker basketball from falling to the third most popular hoops team in Nebraska, behind Creighton and the Creighton junior varsity team). Omaha's current campus would likely be shrunk to meet the needs of Lincoln.

Secondly, UNO's athletics are branded as "Omaha's team", trying in part to carve out a niche for themselves as "Not the Cornhuskers". If UNO disappears, then so does that Omaha-centric branding. This also reaches into fan loyalty, because in all likelihood, the current fan base would not continue with the Cornhuskers identity (and definitely wouldn't follow them to Lincoln should that occur).

In short, location, consolidation, fan loyalty, branding.

Ding, ding, ding we have a winner! Omaha is were the AAU type of reserach takes place. If they merged athletics they keep Division one hockey and can everything else.
