Ding, ding, ding we have a winner! Omaha is were the AAU type of reserach takes place. If they merged athletics they keep Division one hockey and can everything else.

I was talking the med school, not UNO. The med school is its own thing and it's that reason why UNL got kicked out, because the med school is too independent and they wouldn't count it towards UNL academics. If the med school merges with UNL, UNO is not affected. There wouldn't be any merging of UNO and UNL.

But, if it gets to 12 teams I expect the conference to be blown apart with DU and UND founding the North American College Hockey Conference or the NACHC. Wait a minute it appears they are four teams and a calligrapher having a stroke away from truly becoming the NaCHo.

Why wait for the geezer to have a stroke? Why not just call it the North American College Hockey Organization?

Only to the extent one Regent thought it up. UN-Kearney was going to be the "Husker-Lopers" as well. I don't know if it was ever actually proposed, or if the one guy was just spouting off random thoughts. I know it had no chance in hell of ever actually happening.

Also, the schools are not going to merge. You might see UNMC merge with one or the other rather than being its own separate entity, but I doubt that'll happen either.
You mean to tell me that this idea was coming from one of the regents of the whole Nebraska system??

UN-Medical Center is not UN-Omaha. It's its own separate campus, with its own chancellor, funding, and everything...

There's really no incentive for UNO and UNL to merge anymore than UW-Milwaukee would merge with UW-Madison.

They can save money by disbanding the UNO athletic department by merging schools.

UNO did just cut it's football and defending national championship wrestling team in order to focus on getting a Mach Madness pay check out of their basketball team.

And as far as Iowa State's hockey situation. They do have a leg up on other schools as they do NOT have to add a women's team. Iowa State has about 23 Male scholarships to give out before their scholarship % equals their schools male/female ratio.

What does worry me is how many sporting events people in a town of 55,000 can attend? The Men's basketball team nearly sells out for all its Big 12 games, and and the women's basketball team is 3rd in the nation in attendance while the Wrestling squad 6th, and the Volleyball team 15th. That's a lot of people who are already shelling out $$ for sporting events.

And they need a new arena (right at the end of Welch where they tore down the Towers ;) )

And as a sports fan, the idea of cutting a whole athletic department is a good idea how???

The sports fan caveat gives you a break but some schools have cut out sports as such entirely. They have shown a better balance sheet and have been able to increase the number of inter-mural activities that the students compete in. Don't think it can't happen.

This thread should just be called _________ pursuing D1 Hockey. Also what is more likely, a school with a varsity D3 team moves up to D1, or a school with a club team moves to varsity and plays at the D1 level?

So hockey has been played in Hilton, right? Why not figure out a way to do it again?

My money is on Western being the first to drop, either from budget reasons or they get tired of being the bottom feeder. Miami will be next, mainly budget in their case as you can add roughly an hour to most of the Western times to figure out Miami's trips. If Western plans on taking a bus for all those 11 hr trips, good luck with recruiting. What 20 year old kid wants to spend two full days round trip on a bus for most road trips?

Kearney to Youngstown. Fargo to Muskegon. And so on. Therefore, any kid who played in the USHL will be used to it - and playing a season that's about half the length (once preseason and playoffs are counted). So, they are used to it and it would still be less of a burden physically.

IMHO, club to varsity is more likely. D3 teams that move up in the future will not be allowed to offer scholarships (current ones are grandfathered), so I think it's more likely that a super-donor would target a full D1 school rather than D3.

I can't lie, I was thinking earlier that we should set up a monthly (quarterly?) informal poll of hypothetical college hockey teams... semi serious in that we'd rank 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 the programs we felt most likely to go D1. Make it a true navel gazing feature of the boards.

#7 isn't happening. That horse is long since dead.

Adrian could happen Hammer. With the rest of Adrian's facilities, they would well in the GLIAC with their other sports there. All they would have to is move the rest of their sports up to D2 so that they could give scholarships for a D1 hockey program. Would need a totally new barn, but they could find a way to do it if they ever got a money bag donor that wanted D1 hockey there.

The money bag donor already gave them their arena. They're not tearing down a 5-year old rink, that they just built a restaurant in, to put up a new one.

Who said they would need to tear down the current arena??? They could shoehorn another ice sheet with an few thousand seat arena if they really wanted too. They could keep the current rink for practice and other stuff.

Thanks, I was doing a little tongue in cheek thing though...outside of football...is Nebraska good at anything?
1) showing how big bo pellini's ears are.
2)keeping Tom Osborne alive.
3)spending money on memorial stadium trying to keep up with the Joneseses
4)creating traffic jams on Saturdays
5)forgetting to put ice in an arena so they never can have a D1 hockey team.
6)beating Baylor at 1 sport, now we don't play them anymore
7)using coal generated electricity to produce ethanol, hey we're green!
8) letting non residents get on the election ballot.
9) growing corn and selling it to china and other foreign countries that hate us.
10) sandbagging river levies
11) raising tuition to pay for new sky boxes.
