This rumor might have some legs. Heard another Big 12 school is looking into it as well. Hard to imagine one would make the leap without the other.
And yes they would play in the NCHC
Iowa State is barely a D1 school, and only a bcs school because the big 12 needed schools. The new WCHA is made up of the second tier D-II play ups and BG. That would not fit the athletic profile of a BCS school.

Kind of like: Michigan Tech is barely a DII school and only because the GLIAC accepts charity cases that can't afford football.![]()
I'll believe it when I see a major news publication reporting it. Otherwise it is nothing more than internet rumors.
Stupid Android. It would never happen on a PC.We heard you the first time.
Maybe Iowa State can join Syracuse, Navy, Kennesaw, and MN-Moorhead in the Rumored Collegiate Hockey League. The schools don't actually play, rather they compete by seeing how much buzz they can create without officially forming a team. Moorhead won this years RCHL title by planning out a team but then announcing it just wouldn't work funding wise. Kennesaw won the title in 2005 and Navy has always been consistent. Penn State, a perennial power, was voted out of the league before the start of the season for actually creating an NCAA team.
Also, they can save money by using cornstalks to help build the structure.

Sounds like a rumor to me. "We would start one if we had the money," applies to pretty much every NCAA school that doesn't currently have hockey, explicitly stated or not.MSU-Moorhead wasn't a rumor they just could find enough money to start up a program.

Either way the Iowa State rumor certainly makes the other school considering hockey make more sense.
The NCHC would appear to have two slots open to get to 10 teams and that might be driving some of the interest as well.
