Good question. How many Big 10 teams will get bye into the tournament? Considering the high end quality of the league you have to expect at least 4.
Nobody gets a bye into the tournament. Do you mean autobid? The answer to that is at most one. Do you mean at-large bid? That's what the discussion in the posts preceding yours is all about.
If they retain their current nominal (and anticipated) strengths then most of the league will still be regular visitors to the NCAAs. If anything... a 20 game schedule will probably enhance the chances for the BIG12 schools given the same relative strength of play.
Also don't discount the fact that of their 14 non-conference games, probably 8 of them will be at home, 2 at neutral sites, and maybe 4 true road games. UND/MN is the only rivalry I can really see remaining as a home-and-home series. The rest will probably turn into 2-for-1 (or worse) type deals. Michigan may never leave AA ever again...
Easy for you to say.As for the small WCHA schools, I think they'll be fine.
Easy for you to say.
Mankato can't take "a small hit" money-wise.My cousin played for MSU-M, so I have a vested interest in the program. They'll take a small hit, but the program will survive. I hope they turn the Mariucci Classic into an all-Minnesota tournament. That would be cool, and help cushion the loss.

I fear a "perfect storm" due to attendance already dropping, more people considering dropping season tickets due to poor performance, then the perception that the league is losing some of its "big-time" status will be the death blow. I think that in a couple of years we'll be back to attendance under 2000 a game.I don't really like it either (I don't think it benefits the Gophers as much as some of the other B1G schools), but there isn't anything we can do about it. I think Mankato will find a way to make it work.

Because it will be a gradual, slow, decline. It's not like 10 programs will fall right away. It will erode, like rocks on a beach. Smaller schools that need those bigger schools will survive for a while, then, as time goes on, that extra money that they can count on every year adds up, those schools will most likely look at what is feasible financially, and hockey (due to popularity and cost of a program) will be one of the sports on the chopping block.
Established schools, no matter how small/terrible (think MTU or DU or UND) really don't have much to worry about. All three of those schools either have money, tradition, or both to survive quite a long time. Schools like BSU, WMU, LSSU, and/or even MSU-M have something to worry about. Addition by subraction.
Side note: you think the WCHA F5 will still be permanently in St Paul? Hah! This year's attendance, while still the largest conference tourney I believe, is a sign of the upcoming times. And I know many MN fans (and some WI fans) that won't bother to make the trip, MAYBE even if it's in St Paul, since it won't be "our" conference anymore. And those same fans most likely won't travel to wherever the B1G Ten tourney is (you think MI is gonna allow the conference tourney to always be in St Paul? HAH!).
I can understand your fears, but I think they will still play the Gophers more than you think. They may not make it to Mankato as much, but they will still see the Gophers most years I think (and they get $$ even if they don't play in Mankato). I said it before and I'll say it again. I think they should turn the Mariucci Classic into a MN Hockey showcase. Also, with a large chunk of Gopher games moving to the BTN, maybe FSN will pickup some MSU-M, SCSU, tUMD, and BSU games. A good TV contract is more important than attendance.
...and all non conference games for the Gophers will be on FSN.
This.
While not necessarily the highest rated programming on FSN (I have to imagine the Twins draw way more, and I'm pretty sure the Wild draw at least as much if not more), FSN knows it has a loyal hardcore fanbase with the Gophers' hockey team, and would rather not give that up.
If the guarantee is high enough. No, they'll leave Ann Arbor... to go to the Joe for the GLI.
I seem to recall some rumor about how the conference was going to demand that they have as many home NC games as possible. Could the eastern teams be bought out for a one-and-done series?
