Im sick of the BTHC fearmongering

MavsFan - while I understand (and perhaps even somewhat agree with) your fears for MSUM, imho your biggest problem is hanging onto Jutting. A more dynamic (and hopefully successful) coach could help the Mavs weather this impending storm.
No argument from me. How Jutting is still here is beyond my comprehension.

Re: Im sick of the BTHC fearmongering

This.

While not necessarily the highest rated programming on FSN (I have to imagine the Twins draw way more, and I'm pretty sure the Wild draw at least as much if not more), FSN knows it has a loyal hardcore fanbase with the Gophers' hockey team, and would rather not give that up.

During the winter time FSN just wants to break even until the Twins start up in April. Currently the Wild outdraw the Wolves and the Gophers. If I remember right the Gophers draw a little under the Wolves but not by much.

Re: Im sick of the BTHC fearmongering

I meant that, with a portion of Gopher conference games being broadcast on the BTN, there will be less Gopher games on FSN this year.
All Gopher Big Ten games will be broadcasted on the BTN.

I was pondering whether FSN would consider picking up other in-state college games to pickup the slack, or whether they would broadcast something else. That bump in TV revenue could be significant for MSU-M or SCSU. I believe UMD and BSU already have nice TV contracts, but I could be wrong.

I haven't talked to anybody about this last comment but I highly doubt FSN will broadcast non Gophers games. The dufos Bruce McLeod should negotiate a WCHA game or games of the week. A while back the WCHA was talking about a game of the week or a WCHA television network like the Big Ten but he didn't believe they could do it. This guy does not ever plan or see the big picture in accordance with the WCHA. IMO, his time has passed and the WCHA needs leadership.

Re: Im sick of the BTHC fearmongering

No cable company would pay for a WCHA Network...it would die worse than Victory Sports did.

45 used to show WCHA games (lots of St. Cloud games) the WCHA should be talking to them.

Pre BTHC it MIGHT have worked, but I'm still skeptical. Now? Now way.

Midco Sports Network (which has something like 3 sub-channels) picks up a lot of the Charter games (MSU and SCSU) plus the Fighting Sioux Sports Net games. If they could figure out a way to get Midco Sports Net wider distribution, or get a game of the week, just doing the same (picking up the production from Charter, FSSN and Lakeland here in Bemidji) on 45, that would be the way to go.

With government funding of public TV going way down is Lakeland going to have the money to keep broadcasting BSU games?

I agree but Fox Sports North could do a game of the week.

Re: Im sick of the BTHC fearmongering

In concern to B1G network broadcasts, I foresee them featuring either Minnesota or Michigan vs other B1G opponent every weekend to maximize ratings as opposed to B1G games between the other 4. Not trying to bring down the other 4, but a PSU-OSU style game is like gopher football vs Northwestern no one out side those two fan-bases care to watch, not to mention the vast majority of the home-team fans are at the game.

They sold a lot of "underwriting" sponsorships that paid for the bulk of the production costs. Last I heard, they were even looking at expanding to broadcast a couple of the high school games that are played at Sanford Center (based on the success of the BSU broadcasts). Beyond '11-'12, we'll see, but next year is a done deal.

Re: Im sick of the BTHC fearmongering

There will be tons of National Coverage. Big ten Hockey will be huge for the sport.

If you think some how showing games on BTN is going to some how grow the sport to new heights you are nuts. People need to face the facts this is a regional sport and the only people that care are the few fans who follow it.

That's good to hear.

Here's some tips.

1. Buy an english book. Pay special attention to the grammar and spelling sections.

2. Stop repeating the same stupid "subsidy" argument over and over again. No one has made that argument in some time. Subsidies would involve checks being cut from the Big Ten schools to the smaller ones. If anything, the creation of a BTHC would increase these subsidies you're so in terror of in the form of paying schools for home games with no return dates.

3. Stop being a toolbag in general.

well according to the majority of people on here it playing those teams it what keeping the small schools programs from folding.

Not a subsidy. What you are questioning is the dependence of small schools on the B1Gs.

To be honest, that's just a sad reality. Basketball programs at small schools can afford to have no self-sustainability because its cheap. Football programs at small schools can (sometimes) afford it because football is so popular.

Hockey has neither going for it, which means that hockey programs at some small schools simply just can't survive on their own. It's a shame, and it's terrible, but it is a harsh truth that will once again rear its ugly head the moment another school decides to join Wayne State, Fairfield and Findlay in the graveyard.
