Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

They'd need walls on the state borders, too, and there's no way that's legal.

Why would they need that? A wall on the southern border is probable worthwhile. A wall on all 4 borders wouldn't be. AZ is the preferred smuggling route because it's the easiest. Put the southern wall up, and most of the smuggling route will shift elsewhere, too (likely to N.M.)

And then from NM into AZ.

If you didn't notice, we just had our local law stopped in its tracks, so no, we can't just enforce our local laws.

You had your kidnapping, extortion, murder, controlled substance, and the other parts of your criminal code stopped in its tracks? Really?

Re: Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

William F. Buckley defined conservatism at its best as "standing athwart history, yelling Stop, at a time when no one is inclined to do so, or to have much patience with those who so urge it."

I always liked that. It's too bad conservatism in practice is rarely, if ever, at its best.

I never liked Buckley much, but that's a nice quote.

Only if you believe that people coming into AZ are currently going straight into CA rather than stopping in AZ. The path of least resistence would just have the drug runners basing out of Albaquerque and Santa Fe instead of Tucson and Phoenix.

Never said that. But you know that. You're purposely ignoring what I meant. You're better than that.

Re: Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

You're a conservative who doesn't like Buckley and I'm a liberal who does. Go figure. :p

To me he made some good arguments at times, but he was such a pompous windbag, I couldn't stand to listen to him, and reading him was only slightly less odious.

Oddly, that part never bothered me. :p :p :p

(I never really thought of him as pompous. Just a Yalie.)

So, what you're getting at is, Arizona should just wait for kidnappings, extortions, murders, and drug deals to happen, THEN get these guys and throw them into jail and HOPE the Feds are feeling charitable and are willing to deport them?

You don't understand the situation on the ground here much, eh?

In an ideal world, no, the Feds would be doing their jobs. But this isn't an ideal world, is it? Given the situation as it stands, it's one possible solution. (and there are things like attempt crimes, conspiracy, and the like which allow arrests before the actual harm takes place.)

Re: Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

Maybe it's been translated from Spanish, and it flows better in the native language?

Possible, though I'm still not sure what a judges' ruling has to do with the people rising up. Oh wait, it's just bluster.

Why would anyone in Mexico City care about this anyway? [/rhetorical]

PHOENIX (AP) -- A federal judge dealt a serious rebuke to Arizona's toughest-in-the-nation immigration law on Wednesday when she put most of the crackdown on hold just hours before it was to take effect.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton shifts the immigration debate to the courts and sets up a lengthy legal battle that may not be decided until the Supreme Court weighs in. Republican Gov. Jan Brewer said the state will likely appeal the ruling and seek to get the judge's order overturned.

But for now, opponents of the law have prevailed: The provisions that most angered opponents will not take effect, including sections that required officers to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws.

Re: Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

OMG, really? None of us had heard about this. It's almost like we hadn't been discussing this for 3 pages and 2 1/2 hours.

You got me. I am gainfully employed, and my job often requires my active attention. I noticed the dateline and thought it was new.

As you were.

Somehow the feds do their jobs on the California, New Mexico, and Texas borders with Mexico. We now have a federal government that many times only enforces its laws when it is politically advantageous.

You say that's a possible solution, and then give me grief for complaining? But that's easy to do when your state doesn't remotely border Mexico and in the end you can just turn a blind eye.
