Illegal Immigration Pt. III: It's Illegal to be Illegal? Really?

Who posted anything "anti-American"?

And why would anyone owe you anything? People do still have the First Amendment, right? Or only one person is allowed to speak their mind, and any opposing viewpoint is not welcome?

Memo to self: sarcasm is wasted on blockheads.

They have over a trillion dollars worth of minerals - they don't need to traffic heroin anymore.

Yeah, but apparently it's right where they can't dig it up and people have known about that stuff for years.

It's the same boondoggle as oil paying for the Iraq war.

Nobody who understands the Middle East in the least ever thought that oil would pay for the Iraq war. It's one of those casual conclusions someone might make if they only looked at the very surface of the situation.

Digging it out isn't the problem; lack of security/stability/infrastructure is the problem.

Maybe the moron who started the war should have thought about the cost a little bit beforehand?

Remember, this is the federal government you're talking about. Don't you think it's a bit much to realistically think they'll consider the cost of things?

I was just addressing the misguided idea that people expected oil to pay for the war. I don't see any reason to believe that is the case.

Yeah...who gave us that wacky idea?

"The oil revenues of that country could bring between $50 and $100 billion over the course of the next two or three years. There's a lot of money to pay for this. It doesn't have to be U.S. taxpayer money. We are dealing with a country that can really finance its own reconstruction, and relatively soon."

I didn't realize you hung on every work Paul Wolfowitz threw out there. :p

I don't usually, but seeing as how he was the genius who was planning the costs of the war, it stood to pay attention to what he said. Like many other predictions about the occupation, he turned out to be 100% wrong. I'm shocked.

ok, I stand corrected. Very few people thought or at least speculated that oil would or could pay for the Iraq war. Didn't make sense then, doesn't make sense now. Can you imagine the screaming around the world if we took any oil from Iraq? It'd be deafening.

100%? I thought it was more like 1000% over budget at this point...

The government isn't taking oil from Iraq...we have companies for that. They get to keep the profit, too. Nice bonus. Sucks for the taxpayer though.

Or do you think those maps of Iraq's oil fields were for vacation planning?

Except, from all accounts I've read, U.S. oil companies haven't gotten a lot of business in Iraq. But, such conspiracy theories play well until people learn more about what's actually going on.

According to the DOE (that's energy, not education) Iraq sends about 500K barrels per day to the US. About half as much as we get from Saudi Arabia.

That doesn't mean anything. It tells you nothing about what oil companies are involved, just that oil is going from country A to country B. And there's no reason to think that whatever oil is going from Iraq to the U.S. is going at anything other than world market prices. This whole idea that somehow the U.S. gets a sweetheart deal on oil from Iraq is total blarney and shows no grasp of how world oil markets work. Show me something substantive that shows anything other than normal world oil markets functioning.

It's a fungible. The only numbers that matter are aggregates.

Wait. You want the oil companies to tell you they are getting a sweetheart deal on oil from Iraq, selling it to taxpayers and keeping the profits rather than helping to reduce the cost of the occupation to the taxpayer? That would be quite a conspiracy.

And I want the numbers to next week's Lotto.

Thanks for confirming that you don't know how international oil markets work. Or that U.S. oil firms aren't getting most of the business in Iraq. Show me evidence that what you sayis going on is going on, and I'll give it at least a little credence. Till then you're just another conspiracy theorist.
