I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

OP-You reminded me of something from my early years-as a kid was in yankee Stadium watching a sunday doubleheader (remember those?) and sitting in front of us was a row of well dressed guys talking baseball. One of them was espousing all his ideas for making the game better, faster, more interesting for the fans. He sounded like an absolute wild man and talking crazy stuff. Found out later it was Bill Veeck scouting the Yankees and their newest players that they had just traded for (and robbed) from Kansas City. Funny-haven't thought about that day in over 50 years.

Anybody who hires a "little person" to take one at bat (under threat of being shot by a sniper if he took a swing) is really thinking outside the box. When Charlie Finley owned the A's he once brought a tape measure to Comiskey park to get an accurate measurement of how far away the center field wall was. The Sox and Veeck claimed it was, like, 700 feet to the wall. Finley discovered it was somewhat less. That little box that popped out of the ground for the umpires to get new baseballs was very cool. The guy was a true American original.

Is there any subject that Old Pio and Dr Demento can't turn into a discussion on Chicago sports from a few decades ago? :D:p:D

Eh, the only thing in that city that I would care if it burnt to the ground is the Field Museum. The rest of the city can burn.

The Art Institute? The Museum of Science and Industry (with a captured German U-boat on display in an underground hall)? Second City? Shedd Aquarium? Wrigley Field? Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House (on the campus of the University of Chicago)? The 27 Wright homes and buildings in my home town (including his home for 20 years and Unity Temple)? Lincoln Park zoo? Navy Pier?

I'll bring the matches and an accelerant.

After the 7 or 8 thousandth lake, it all gets a little boring, no?

Spoken like someone who hasn't spent time on a Minnesota lake for an extended period of time ;) ;)

Just this last trip up the cabin, I admitted that I actually pity the people who don't have the chance to take a trip "up north" to the cabin. Simply nothing like it. Pure relaxation. Watching the sun go down over the glassy lake. Or if there's any wind, listening to the waves to lightly hit the shore. Listen to the loons calling in the distance. The dock creaking almost as if it was relaxing as well. Once the sun sets seeing the satellites chase each other across the sky. The Milky Way making an appearance and the random shooting stars.

Simply nothing like going up north and I wouldn't trade anything for it. :)

No white noise. No pink glow in the sky from a nearby city's lights. And pure air. Crisp and clean.

It's the closest an Earthbound person can come to a state of pure bliss. Even better if you go up to the Boundary Waters where there isn't an electronic device for dozens, if not hundreds, of miles. Unfortunately, I have not been to the BWCA but I've always wanted to go.

Yeah, but yours are sh*tty. And filled with cheese. Plus you have to deal with people from Wisconsin. Quality, not quantity. :p

When I dream, they're full of paint thinner and floating deer carcasses...
