Too bad many of what Wisconsin calls "lakes", Minnesota calls ponds. If Minnesota dropped their acreage requirement for what a lake is, Minnesota has more.

I remember a newscaster years ago, just transferred from....somewhere not in the midwest. They made a comment after the weather segment that went something like, "Wow, what a gorgeous day. A great day to take a stroll around Lake Minnetonka." You could hear everyone in MN laugh from states away. :D

It's the closest an Earthbound person can come to a state of pure bliss. Even better if you go up to the Boundary Waters where there isn't an electronic device for dozens, if not hundreds, of miles. Unfortunately, I have not been to the BWCA but I've always wanted to go.

Honestly, Ely is a nice area and all, but if you can jump across the border into Quetico it's that much better, IMO... Much less "touristy".... Having done both, the Canadian side just seems to have fewer people, and the people in there are much more serious about the outdoors... Quetico doesn't allow motors either... Also I don't believe that you're really isolated from electronics totally in that area any more... I mean, Ely is like 15 miles from the Canadian border, and I think they get cell service now... It's not like we're talking about Houghton here :p

One of my old college roommates used to live in the Superior National Forest, about 1/2 hour north of Two Harbors. Right on Marble Lake. There was NOTHING there. It was awesome.

Edit: if you have a good atlas, it'll show a plane runway (of sorts) there. That was on his land. Yes, they had a plane.

One of my favorite things (of too many to mention) in the BWCAW is late at night how the silence is absolutely deafening.

I remember one particular night after a longer than expected paddle due to all of the sites being taken. After a steak dinner (first day in we always bring something to grill) and about 5 J's and I was really freaking out - in a good way. :)

Haven't been to Quetico.

Agreed. It was the first time I actually heard "nothing."

Best part about hearing "nothing" is that you can trick first timers into thinking that the little rodent shuffling around your campsite is really a 800lb Bear that is looking for meat :p

Funny thing about that is that a couple of nights after the night I mentioned, if you follow, a bear got our food pack.

Had it in a tree and all that, but he reached out from the trunk and slashed the bottom of the pack open, dumping the contents on the ground. Pack was still in the tree next morning.

Only thing we heard, the only thing of the whole episode that was maybe 20 yards away was the initial noise of the pots hitting the rocks underneath. He ate everything including unwrapping all of the granola bars without us hearing anything. Even took a dump for good measure.

To answer the question - no we didn't run out yelling and screaming to chase him away. Exceptionally dark night and that sounds all well and good until you're out in the middle of absolutely nowhere with one skinny dude and two women as backup in the middle of the night.

And to be honest, I was pretty scared. Never been so scared of an animal before or since.

I once had a black bear right outside my tent with the nearest person about a mile away across the lake. I remember hearing it within a foot or two of the tent and sniffing around before it moved over to the grill grate we used to grill steaks that night. Single most terrifying moment of my life.

Yeah, but they're more afraid of you...
