Re: I Think I'll Go For A Walk - Death Pool Thread

We might be losing/have lost Jerry "The King" Lawler. Went into convulsions while announcing Raw and was carried away by arena staff. Commentary has stopped.

ETA: Rushed to hospital, alive and breathing on his own. Cardiac arrest.

Momo (another resident of my home town) also found time to pimp for POTUS with the stunningly beautiful Judith Campbell Exner. It wasn't long after Momo's name came up in congressional testimony as being part of the repeated Kennedy efforts to clip Castro, and his pending testimony before the Church committee, that Sam wound up very dead. As did Johnny Roselli, the other mobster involved in "Operation Mongoose." Sam was shot up close and personal in his basement as he prepared sausage and peppers. Roselli's body was found in a 55 gallon drum, floating off Miami Beach.

There is considerable speculation that the guy who clipped Momo was Anthony "the ant" Spilotro (another resident of my home town). Momo had helped to advance "the ant's" career, which included a couple of dozen murders. And probably would have allowed "the ant" to come into his home. Joe Pesci's character in "Casino" was based on "the ant." And both "the ant" and his brother were murdered and buried in a common grave on an Indiana farm owned by a Chicago mobster. Kansas City had nothing to do with it.

You are truly a wealth of trivia and minutia. I did know about Ms Exner (who was indeed a looker) but the rest is all new to me. Thanks for posting.

No visit to my hometown is complete without the "gangster tour of homes."

I grew up in East New York-Brooklyn-the home of Lepke, Rellis, and the rest of Murder Inc. As kids we were carefully instructed where we could and could not hang out.:)

Living in New Jersey in the 60's and 70's the word was that those neighborhoods were among the safest in NYC.

They were incredibly safe-in Canarsie we never thought to lock our doors. We were just told what areas to stay clear of to avoid any contact with what was known to be a criminal element. I do recall as a kid the death of Albert Anastasia (1957 I think) and my parents telling me they were sure it had to be someone from our neighborhood who was involved.

The bigshots in my hometown (Tony, Teets, Momo, Paul, Anthony, et al) conducted their business downtown. They were anxious to keep a low profile. Or, as they say in Texas, avoided sh*tting in their own chili. Unless someone pointed out their homes, there's no way you would have noticed or known. And since the town was dry, there were no cheap dives for them to hang out in.

My old man once had a prominent gangster as a patient and (to make a long story very short) the guy gave him a business card. The guy said "if you ever need my help, just give me a call." He wasn't talking about fixing a traffic ticket. The conversation might be like this: "Whatever happened to Mr. Smith? He'd been beefing with Dr. Pio, went out for some dim sum, and never came back."

Sort of like a community organizer / neighborhood watch type of fella. Probably got an award from the local Chamber for keeping the streets clean (and the dumpsters full).

Also, OP is obviously proud of the fellow fine upstanding citizens of his home town. ;)

Sort of. But don't fail to include Hemingway, Frank Lloyd Wright, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Ray Kroc (among others), too.

Hmmm...Hemingway loved the bottle, Wright built a home that leaked water big time, Burroughs dreamed of being a swinger, and Kroc is responsible for the obesity epidemic in this country!

Miscreants and scallywags! :p ;)

They fit right in. Tony Accardo was the Babe Ruth of gangsters. Effectively ran "the outfit" for nearly half a century. Never convicted of anything. And lived pretty large, as you can see. "Casino" is the story of how Accardo and "the outfit" ran the NY families out of Vegas.

Steve Sabol, founder of NFL Films, 69.
Haven't seem them in awhile, but NFL Films at least used to be awesome. As a kid I really enjoyed the various highlight films they put out. I'm not sure Steve had quite the touch his dad did with film.

Didn't know he played football at Colorado College.

One thing for sure not as good as the old days, John Facenda narrating. Talk about the "voice of God." ESPN and other sources of replay have diminished the importance of the films. But they've been a big part of why the NFL is #1.

When I was much younger-I would set the alarm clock to get up and watch the 1/2 hour show they had once weekly that showed clips from each of the games and was televised past my bed time in NYC. In those days with no other coverage-it was just incredible to see the highlight plays from every NFL game played that week.

Also in those days, with so few college games on the tube, it was important to tune in to ABC on Sunday to see film highlights of the big games that were blacked out. What was the name of the host of that show? He was a Michigan man, IIRC.
