How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

Ya the STOP signs have eliminated check from behinds.. LMFAO!! You would think USA Hockey was a bit more innovative.. Maybe get instructors out on the road to work with coaches and players to help them understand the concept of body contact instead of having a Dad that is re-living his JV hockey career!
"Hi Coach. Reggie Dunlop from USA Hockey, I'm here to teach the kids how to check."

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

Concussions, spinal injuries, lawsuits, lighter equipment, faster speeds will eventually bring more changes. Tighter rules or more vigilant enforcement of the rules is an inevitable by-product.

Additionally there is far more hitting, contact and injuries in the average college game vs. a regular season NHL game.

They also use the full cages in college. That's contributing to a lot of these feelings of invincibility.

Please provide stats to back up this claim..

Also there is no doubt that guys have gotten faster and equipment has become lighter.. However, the current ways we enforce those rules have increased the games speed as well. Impeding ones progress through any area of the ice is called all the time and clutching, grabbing an opponent is called immediately. A slight hook to the mid section is called every single time now. Officiating and the ways the rules have been enforced and interpeted are something needs to be looked at. Everyone wants faster cleaner hockey but eliminating check from behinds is impossible. Cripes it still happens in the womens game and that is NO Check hockey!

I hate to say it, but clutching and grabbing is not called in the ECAC, because teams do it all the time, especially the one that made the original complaint. Obviously the NCAA has been introducing points of emphasis, interference being one a couple years ago, and sometimes they look for it, but when you're looking for so much, obviously you can't see everything. I know the NHL had experimented with a podium ref (similar to how the ref is positioned for a volleyball game).

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

today's players to turn their back to the ice is the biggest cause of these injuries.

DING DING DING.... We have the winner. How many times have we seen a player turn to face the boards (or do something other than face the attacker) when they are about to get hit? This goes for any league, not just the NCAA. Players are more frequently facing the boards rather than the other player and when you add the fact that they might be looking down for the puck in their feet, any hit is going to not only look worse but have an increased rink of more severe injuries.

Hyperbole at its finest.

I will throw a red flag. I go to over 30 HS games a year and if there is hit that brings ooooo's and aaaaaaa's from the spectators it is a penalty. Some of the games a couple body checks are clean and the player is penalized and it shuts down the physical contact aspect of the game completely. I have been to numerous HS games where i thought man Womens D1 games are more physical than this.. I have also gone back and watched the old VHS Tapes of HS games in the 90's and it is not even close to the same..

If you could get the women's teams to wear the same outfits as the volleyball players, you might have a winner. Might also increase attendance.

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

I see just as many (albeit about 10 are on TV/online) each year and still call b.s.

btw, if Shooter McGavin has been watching Minnetonka and Wayzata on FSN tonight not only would he have seen several hard hits not called for a penalty as of yet, but there have been several no-calls on elbows as well as potential roughing calls after the whistle. Probably not enough dropped gloves for his tastes though.

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

When hockey players take the ice they assume the risk of accidental injury, just as we all assume the risk of accidental injury when we drive on public highways. But if someone in the throes of road rage deliberately rams my car and causes me grave injury that someone faces something more than a five minute "time out." Drivers understand that deliberately ramming one car into another is likely to cause serious injury. Hockey players understand that deliberately ramming into the back of another hockey player next to the boards is likely to cause serious injury.
College, among other things, is supposed to turn boys into men. Accountability for one's actions is an introduction to manhood. A five-minute-time-out is for children.

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

Coaches are going to start encouraging league-wide "secret" doping programs so that players can gain strength to help them withstand all these dirty hits they are taking. Teams will also be scheduling their games in larger groups. The first half of the season will be 16 games in 20 nights followed by a two-week break for finals. After the new semester begins, the season will conclude with 20 regular season games in 24 days with the conference and NCAA playoffs to be held the following week, one game per day until we have our NCAA champion. "...And it's all legal here in the All-Drugs NCAA Hockey League. Ohhh it appears the UND player has had his arm ripped clean from it's socket on that check from behind. Tough break for the former Sue player who showed so much promise early on this season. Well there is always next year..."
