How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

My broadcast partner and I were talking about this on the air in the post game of the RPI-Colgate the night before. Scenario: RPI had the lead with about 5 seconds to go in the game. Colgate had their goalie pulled. RPI cleared the puck all the way down the ice past the Colgate crease. There was no chance that Colgate was going to get the puck and score the tying goal. An RPI player (Ryan Haggerty) was able to get to the puck and hold possession until time ran out. One of the Colgate players hit Haggerty from behind as Haggerty was just standing there. (learly unnecessary as Haggerty had stopped skating and was standing straight up, as RPI had the game won.) Colgate was assessed a 5 minute major at the end of the game, a call that is obviously not going to affect the outcome of the game. Haggerty turned out to be ok and scored a goal the next night, as he was not as injured as I thought he was going to be.

I started an on-air discussion then. What if a player takes a 5 minute major inside say the last two minutes of a game and the penalty will not make a difference in his team's ability to win the game, is automatically assessed a game DQ for the next night? That way, the player, and the team, will still be penalized and the unnecessary hit may be cut down. Or something to the effect of, if the penalty will not give an advantage either way (i.e) if a team is up 5-2 and a penalty is taken with one minute left, the team that is penalized starts the next night on the penalty kill? I know it may sound far fetched, but it's something to explore.

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

You have a good point. Let's take a look at video evidence:

http://rpitv.org/productions/530-hockey-vs-cornell
Under playlist select "First Period", and go to about 12:30 video time (~9:30 game time).

The kid clearly has his head down as he goes into the boards. It also looks like a turn to the boards so not a clean CFB, but more like the drawing a 5-and-game that we're so used to seeing ever since the rule was put into place. Obviously, the head down and that going into the boards is what caused the injury. I seem to remember, during the WJC, one of the commercials on the NHL Network was about how not to go head first into the boards and properly take a check. It's a bit ironic that a WJC player has this happen to him.
You are on crack. The "turn" was a hockey stop to change direction to look for his man down low in the corner, and he was effectively motionless when B initiated the hit. His head was only down because he was already horizontal to the ice by the time he reached the boards because he was so far away when the hit was initiated - look at his feet. He's INSIDE the faceoff circle when he was hit. Even your own announcers were saying it was a clear 5.

Yeah, what a faker - played the whole rest of the game, which is clearly the best strategy to try to elicit sympathy and draw a stiffer punishment. I bet he had his own teammates punch him repeatedly in the neck all day on Sunday so something would show up on the MRI on Monday.

The only thing that would make sense in this case is the game DQ. Penalty time should not transfer from game-to-game or even season-to-season, as that makes for very messy statistics. Not to mention, it's a new day, so a new start (minus league or national suspensions, of course, but that happens in every sport). This is something that the USHL does for fisticuffs with less than 5 minutes remaining in the game, and I know the NHL had experimented with fines for something fairly similar after the 04-05 lockout.

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

How about if a person posts something that gives me a headache, they can't post again until the headache goes away? :p

On a serious note, very sorry to hear about the injury, and hope he makes a complete recovery. Never like to see that. This isn't the answer though. It's reactionary and won't work because of all the reasons outlined in this thread that I won't bore you by rehashing.

Unfortunately, this country has been doing this lately. First the whole terror thing with 9/11, then all this gun control stuff because of a shooting event, and now this. I wouldn't be shocked to see it happen.

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

It should be a rule that if you receive a 5 Minute Major within the last 5 mins for regulation (even if the game goes to ot and the full 5 mins can be served) it should be an automatic DQ for the next game.

I have no issue with that, as other comparable leagues do something very similar. There's only one problem with bringing this discussion into the argument, though: the hit happened around 9:30 of the first period. ;)

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

Why doesn't the NCAA have a Brendon Shannahan? Every questionable hit is enforced and explained as why it was a penalty and why the infraction deserves more or less punishment. The NCAA owes it to its players.. Not like they don't have the money!

Because it's usually the league's choice for additional suspensions instead of the NCAA, and at least the ECAC (the league to which these two teams belong) does not make public any of these guidelines.

I know that it happened early on in the game.... But I am just stating that is a rule change I would like to see. Personally I have no problem with a 5MM Checking from behind no mater when it is committed being a DQ for the next game. Far to many players can no longer walk because of someones stupidity.

Not fair to those who get the major because the guy they were checking decides to turn at the last second in order to draw the penalty, like in the 2007 Icebreaker when the refs practically handed the goofers the first game.

Sorry to break it to ya, but if you have not learned yet; life is not fair sunshine :p there will always be **** happens moments, but the vast majority of 5 min Checking from behind calls are not this scenario. they usually get a 2 min call. and if in the refs judgement it is worth a 5 then too bad if that means it a DQ as well.

If it is not the NCAA then the league needs to adopt something like the NHL. I love going to NHL.com and seeing as why and how many games a particular player got from the NHL from an infraction. Every game is taped now days and everything is very reviewable by a committee. I dont get it.

How many players are stricten with career ending injury from a check from behind??? I bet in the last 10 years you can count em on one hand...

You don't deal much with what we have in this league, nor do you read the RPI threads often, do you...

Yep it's all part of the Gopher tConspiracy, welcome to the new world order.

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

You can never "eliminate" dirty hits in a physical game full of hits. Hockey players like to hit and whether or not they intend to hurt somebody, it's going to go awry every once in a while. That's the way it has always been and always will be.

Hockey will have to become a non-contact sport for this to be completely eliminated.

BINGO! These types of Threads and/or discussions only come up when; your guy or your team suffers from it.
