How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

Nice concept in theory, unworkable in practice. Others have already explained why.

It seems to me that the timing of these hits during the game should be a major factor in the discipline meted out, however. I recall a game two or three years ago between BU and RPI in which BU just completely lost it collectively and were assessed something like three game misconducts during the final 15 seconds or something ridiculous like that.

Deliberately trying to injure a player when there is no time left in the game is another level of escalation above and beyond a hit delivered in the normal flow of the game.

(and to start a fight after the game has already ended? that's almost reaching the level of criminal misconduct (i.e., assault). Granted, you don't see that very often; it seems to me you should never once see that. Routinely prosecute those few cases that do occur.)

There's a part of me that doesn't trust Cornell, or the league for that matter, when it comes to that team's falls and injuries.

Even Fat Mike wouldn't stoop so low as to fake a season-ending neck injury to a player in hopes of drawing additional disciplinary action against the offender, if that's what you're implying.

I'm more of talking about putting the kids into physical danger with all these skating mother teresa tactics.

How exactly does this conversation go in your mind?

Fat Mike: Ok, guys, listen up. We have a new strategy. Instead of trying to pass, shoot, or score, we're just going to sort of hover around near the boards, and if you see a hit coming, just turn away from it to draw a penalty. And for the love of god, PLEASE put your head down because, hey, even though you might be disabled for life, at least we'll get another team's goon suspended for a few games. I really think this is our best chance to pick up some points in the standings.

Cornell Team: SOUNDS GREAT, COACH!

And yet, you support a boring team that consists of guys bigger than me that take falls.

I was pretty sure his paranoia was just an act. Now that I see he pulls the same thing on the hockey part of the boards, I'm less certain.

After what RPI has had to put up with when it comes to Cornell, I'd be surprised if you didn't end up the same way.

Please Note the following video has adult language.

FlagDUDE, I respect your opinions but your starting to sound like this guy. Saying Cornell and its coaching staff is telling kids to get hurt to gain an advantage is crazy.

I enjoy it when someone posts "How can you root for that boring/dirty/annoying team!"

BECAUSE I WENT TO SCHOOL THERE, YOU NIMROD.

/end rant.

Re: How to Eliminate Unclean Hits

First of all best wishes to Bardreau.

We saw first hand what happened to DU's Jesse Martin after his neck was broken in a game against North Dakota. He came within millimeters of dying on the ice that night.

Jack Jablonski was paralyzed for life during a JV game in Minnesota.

Several college players have "retired" recently after spinal cord issues.

Since those incidents and this most recent injury we have seen much tighter enforcement of the rules and a zero tolerance around and along the boards.

Until and unless insurance companies refuse to insure college ice hockey, serious neck, head and back injuries will continue. Companies are experimenting with "softer boards" and helmet technology is evolving, but the hits are too hard and the game is too fast for the spinal cord to absorb these hits.

The solution is to reduce or eliminate hitting from the game and focus on a more "European" brand of hockey for lack of a better word. Obviously it won't happen until some more players die or a paralyzed for life.
