Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

I agree with almost everything written in this thread. Stick with 8 teams make it and the other 4 should have played better. I'm not convinced it would make more money either. I've been to lots of pretty empty quarterfinal games, though I've been at BC the last three years so maybe it's just them.

I especially agree with this with respect to ND:

f them. if they are cryin' poor they can stay with the sisters of the poor in the ccha.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

Good God, why mess up something that works and makes Hockey East's format the best in D-I??

Keep the top 8 only. It works, its clean, its simple, and it creates a "race" for the last spot in the last few weeks of the regular season. This isn't Little League anymore, not everyone needs to be included in the playoffs.

That first round needs to be single elimination.
If you're going over 3 weekends, you may as well make it 2 out of 3 or heaven forbid, two games, total goals to count or 2 games plus the dreaded mini game.

If you're going Tuesday (1st round), Friday - Sunday (QF's) then that's 4 games in a week, which will not make the powers that be happy.

Screw that. If they're gonna make a mockery of the regular season , might as well do the same for the playoffs.
Make all the games shoot outs up to the semis and finals. Preliminary contests will only last about 10 minutes and no one will be tired. :D

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

I don't disagree with Jerry York often. But his insistence on calling the HE RS trophy the "Bertagna Trophy" makes me feel ill.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

I've heard him say Lamoriello trophy many times but I had no idea the RS trophy was named after Bertagna. I think it should be named after Umile.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

If they go with a best 2/3 format for the first round, this benefits the middle 4 teams as these games will generally be played before schools are out for Spring Break and they should see decent attendance. The following week will be the same old, luck to fill have a barn event. It's a bad idea in general, and a playoff is only a playoff if everyone doesn't get in.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

It's almost like the put too many "smart" people in a room, and this is what they came out with.

What was wrong with saying, "Well, with 11 teams, we'll keep the same 8 team playoff format. When the Huskies from CT join, we'll go with 10 playoff teams and 2 people stay home." Some great hockey can happen if 10 and 11 or 9 and 12 are separated by just a few points heading into the final weekend. Why does everybody have to get in now?

Not a fan.

:D

But everything about this expansion has been a disaster. Not necessary at all

Even then, why not cap the field at 10? Final 5 format with a play in 4-5 game on Tuesday at the home site?

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

Absolutely dumb decision. Which is why it doesn't surprise me.

Apparently no one wants to be left out.
The playoff expansion came from a recommendation by the coaches and athletic directors.

I wonder if any coaches / AD's were against the idea.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

So now we're giving every school the equivalent of a participation trophy, like they do out west? Hey, my team has been on the outside looking in more times than I want to count but I stand by having regular seasons that mean something and that at least have a modicum of integrity.

It takes a lot to have NU, BC, and BU fans see things the same way. That's how empty and gutless this decision is.

I guess this is happing for 2 main reasons:

1) More games = more ticket revenue for the conference. The extra money could be distributed to help defray the extra travel costs to ND?

2) There would now be 4 teams per year that don't make it in under the old format. There are some members that are going to be in that 4 more often than not. They will have a big issue with that.

All that being said, I still don't like it. Only positive is that it would still be better than a "Final Five" format like the WCHA has.

Yeah, but I'm not sure how I feel about the fact that 1/3 of the league doesn't make the playoffs.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

For the women, 1/4 of the league doesn't make the playoffs. Also, the ECAC women use top 8. It works pretty well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm cool with some teams not making it. Maybe 4/12 not getting in is an overreach. I'd be okay with 10/12 in the playoffs, or maybe even 9 (play-in game then playoffs). But I think 8/12 is too few.
