Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

What are we going to nickname this one? The Providence rule? Perhaps the UCONN rule?

Why pick on Providence? They made the tourney last season and made quite a bit of noise along the way! If you are going to slag a perennial bottom-feeder then let's call it the "Catamount Rule" or the "Northeastern Rule" or the "Merrimack Rule". Better still let's go with your suggestion and just call it the "Puke On UConn Rule" for they will soon be taking over the cellar spot from Vermont!

Why so serious?

First, you have an odd definition of "perennial"

Two, there is already a Vermont Rule.

Somewhat unrelated, but it appears Notre Dame is headed to the ACC in all sports besides football (and obviously hockey). I know there were some (myself included) that were always a bit curious to see if Notre Dame would ever join the B1G, and how that could further change the hockey landscape. While anything is possible, it looks like Hockey East membership will be stable for the coming years.

Bummer.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

What a dumb move. The QF round doesn't draw flies to most venues as is -- now they're expanding it, giving byes to the higher seeded teams (who won't play) while eliminating a weekend of regular season (i.e. better attended) games involving every team? Umm.....ok....lol.

Deathblow for Uconn football.

OUCH.

Deathblow for UConn football.

Maybe not. Atlantic Coast Conference now has fifteen (15) teams (Notre Dame included). Perhaps with an odd number of teams UConn might get the nod to join the conference as well. Not sure how it would all play out given that Notre Dame is only going to play a partial A.C.C. schedule in football, but it seems reasonable to assume that the commissioners of the conference would prefer an even number of members and UConn seems like an obvious choice. Its (possibly) going to be either Rutgers or UConn and UConn seems the better choice.

The only way that materializes is if the ACC somehow convinces the Domers to give up on football independence entirely.

It won't unbalance basketball scheduling worse than it already is to add a fifteenth, and it doesn't disrupt football standings, divisional alignments, or scheduling to have ACC play a partial football schedule.

Basically, even if the ACC wants UConn, they are *clearly* in no rush to actually get us, else it'd have been announced some time ago. The worst thing that happens to the ACC by waiting is...the Big Ten takes us. Since that's just a hair shy of unlikely, the second worst thing is that the ACC waits too long, and UConn is a moribund program in football AND basketball; the only reason *that* is bad is because it removes future options from the ACC (and, by extension, removes the incentive for the ACC to even think about expanding anyway; if there's no candidates worthy, why bother?).

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

I haven't seen/read anything about the ACC being interested in UConn. I've heard ND to ACC rumors for a while now.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

Hate this. Regular seasons should result in the elimination of some teams.

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

Back in the day of 4 baseball divisions, the winner of each played for the "pennant" and those two winners played in the world series. When I asked my dad why so few teams, he said "If after 162 games, you aren't at the top of your Division, then you aren't the best team in that division."

So to paraphrase him, if you can't make the top 8 out of a 12 team conference, you don't deserve to play for the conference championship.

And if they played 162 games in college hockey, I would agree with you. How many conference games will each team play each season? 22?

Don't get us started on the fact we lost 5 conference games because of this nonsense too.

I don't intend to start some sort of riot :p:D:D

That being said, 22 games doesn't really separate much. Remember the '09-'10 season when 4 points separated 9th from 3rd...I would imagine that with a 22 game conference season you would see that far more often (just look at the ECAC). I understand wanting to have the regular season mean something, but seeding is quite important (as is home ice). I just couldn't justify leaving a team out of a tournament where they may have been 3-4 points away from home ice. This is especially true if the 22 games are not balanced (read: 1 game versus everyone @ home, 1 game versus everyone away).

Re: Hockey East to Expand Playoff Format

People make the same arguments/complaints in the ECAC, but I like the 12-team format. Everyone has something to play for: the byes are obviously important, home ice for the first round is important, and the bottom 4 are still at least fighting for seeds. If you only keep 8/12 in the playoffs, chances are there would be a team or two who would have nothing to play for with 2-3 weeks left in the season - so including all of the teams keeps the interest going for all off the teams for the whole season, making the regular season MORE exciting, not less.

Plus, I'm a huge fan of more non-conference games, so this is a good thing for college hockey overall.
