Hockey East 2020-2021

You're asking me that? I got nothing on that one. As Chuck has been talking about, maybe someone can reach Steve Metcalf from whatever bunker he is operating from.

It is a GENERAL question wasn't directed towards you. I hope Hockey East doesn't pull the BS that the ACC did today and just pick and choose what teams they want in the championship.

That was from last week and only mentioned the games vs UNH this past weekend being canceled. Today's Hockey East update lists the Holy Cross women playing a home and home vs PC this coming weekend.

Also, the BU men are now scheduled to play a game at UConn on Saturday, while the BU women are scheduled to play 2 games at UNH this weekend.

Northeastern's pause, which runs through Dec. 18, has been rolled back for several sports, including men's and women's hockey. Men's hockey now slated for a H&H vs Merrimack Dec. 12 & 13. Baby steps but better than no steps at all.

excellent question- also all games should count as league games
With cancellations include everything
Yes some teams will have more game against stronger teams but nothing is normal this year
Just let them play as many meaningful games as possible

True, there has been an unbalanced schedule before in Hockey East. And if teams don't play the same # of games (would have to be some kind of minimum)...award the title on a points per game basis.

UMass is playing a home and home this weekend Saturday and Sunday against Merrimack. My assumption is like the other four games UMass has played, these won’t be conference games until they are.

Why wouldn't BU and UConn play twice this weekend?

I remember a comment from the Commish that they were going to have the Men's and Women's programs flipped so if one campus was shut down, they would keep it between two schools. Now we are on week 3, so lets do whatever we want!

In theory that was a good idea. In practice it’s probably a nightmare to keep track of. There’s three campuses (I think?) that only play in one side of the the conference, and there’s always a possibility that one team on a campus can play but the other can’t. It happened last week when the BC women played PC even though the PC men weren’t able to play for whatever reason.

There’s potential to be similar events in the future and it would be hard to flip a be all sorts of series.

The interesting thing is that both BC-PC women and UMass-BC men played at Conte a few hours apart IIRC. Why that Friday game wasn’t at the Mullins Center instead to limit cross contamination between PC and UMass beats me.

There is zero excuse for not clarifying this before play started. Beyond doing a **** job with the Covid stuff they’ve completely bottled the format too.

Is there anyone right now who doesn’t think Metcalf should be fired? He certainly has done a good job of making Bertanga look good though.

Drew, is that the Maine Black Bear in you calling for the UNH guy to be fired? ;)

Unless I missed it though it would be nice to have something to reference and say ok this is why a game was postponed. As an example it seems like nobody has any idea why the BC-PC series was called off last weekend.

Bertagna got out at the right time! Tough situation for Metcalf to navigate especially in his first year. At least he didn't cancel the season and then uncancel it like Kevin Warren and the Big Ten did with football. Talk about bottling things...

They did clarify this before play started. The conference made a press release about flex games, and at least several schools did too. There are 20 conference games and schools have the opportunity to play extra flex games as well against conference opponents that may end up counting in the standings if needed, or maybe be completely rescheduled if needed.

It also seems the precedent has been set-and the conference tweeted it out before puck drop of the first UMass-UConn game- that if teams schedule games against new opponents after someone else cancels or postponed on them, then the newly scheduled games don’t count in the standings unless the originally scheduled conference games between the two do not happen.

Is that gonna suck for UMass if the games this past weekend end up becoming conference games? Or the shootout loss against UConn counts? I guess but on the other hand I knew that it was possible days before puck drop, so they had to know it too.

It’s obvious that UMass took a step back losing Makar after the Frozen Four run. I think it’s equally as true that they’re gonna take another step back this year losing Leonard and Chaffee unless the goaltending takes a huge step forward and each of them has is a Richter candidate. Even though they were picked 2 in the coaches poll, I doubt they’ll finish that high. That being said, there is an interesting development here now where UMass has everything to gain and nothing to lose playing the January games against BC and BC has nothing to gain and everything to lose in the regularly season standings by playing those games. I wonder how they’re gonna decide which conference series they’re gonna have to end up flexing later in the season. I could foresee where an upset happens in a non conference series and the winner lobbies to have the follow up series flexed whereas the loser lobbies to have a different series flexed. It could be very interesting to know the details of how they decide which conference games change.

I'm a UNH guy, and I'm not about to defend him. Heck, I've been leading the parade against him. Metcalf has been invisible from the outset, and he isn't getting any better now that this so-called "season" has started. I'm going to start calling him "Commissioner Press Release" if he doesn't show his face at some point. Pandemic or not, you don't lead by issuing press releases, and not fielding questions. He's acting like any well-paid desk jockey functionary would. Except he's the Hockey East commissioner now. You took the job, Tosser - now get out there and do it.

The only thing I'll say in his semi-defense, though, is that he's working for what is likely the biggest collection of spineless jellyfish known to mankind, i.e. the collective presidents and/or AD's of the Hockey East schools. We can only imagine the tenor of the discussions going on behind the scenes with those so-called leaders. "Yeah, let's do this!!" "Sounds great, but you go first." "Uh, actually, I'd rather YOU go first." "I'm not going first, but I'm right behind you." Etc. ad nauseum.

Before we give Joey Buttons any credit for good timing, let's remember, he didn't have a say in the matter, as his contract was publicly non-renewed at some point last season.

This "season" is already a giant cluster, and 90% of it is on the schools and their "leaders". Pathetic.

I doubt the details of a few hockey games is very high on the priority list of most of these university presidents considering the entire situation.

You are for sure. I will pray that they all make a full recovery (if they haven't already which is about a 99% certainty).
