Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

Of course if anyone is interested last year's top goaltenders that are returning:

GAA

2 John Muse Boston College JR 2.40
3 Rob Madore Vermont SO 2.66
4 Chris Rawlings Northeastern FR 2.83
5 Alex Beaudry Providence SO 2.87
7 Joe Cannata Merrimack SO 3.04
9 Paul Dainton Massachusetts JR 3.08
11 Kieran Millan (COA) BU SO 3.15

Save Percentage (Minimum 33% of Team Minutes Played)

2 Alex Beaudry Providence SO .916
3 Chris Rawlings Northeastern FR .913
4 John Muse Boston College JR .910
5 Rob Madore Vermont SO .908
7 Joe Cannata Merrimack SO .902
9 Paul Dainton Massachusetts JR .901
11 Kieran Millan (COA) BU SO .891

I think it's safe to say that the preseason expectations would be that Muse, Madore, Beaudry and Rawlings would be the top picks.

Millan, maybe depending on whether last year was a bit of a Sophmore slump or if he returns to his freshman year.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

that I will do
20 d in league better

According to who? You? I'll grant you Dumoulin, Kessel and Warsofsky (although up by a goal I'd rather have Samuelsson on the ice than Warso), but after that, there's a bunch of good ones.

So you'll bail if he makes all conference? Only you could get someone to root for the son of Ulf Samuelsson to succeed. Congratulations.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

I wouldn't bank on it. While it may be another down year in Hockey East, there is no shortage of top defensemen. Kessel, Warsofsky and Dumoulin have to be the top 3 headed into the year. However, there are a bunch of other guys that I wouldn't be shocked to see in the discussion by the end of the season. Some names that come to mind are Wey, Samuelsson, O'Neill, Dimmen, Edwards, Stollery, Bigos, and Kipp.

Well said. Agreed 100%. Add Tommy Cross to that group as well. He impressed the Bruins brass in development camp and he's 100% healthy.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

I don't usually disagree with your opinions of one-the-ice happenings, but Samuelsson does belong in the discussion. While he probably wouldn't be on and all Hockey East preseason first or second team, he's at least in the discussion and will be at the end of the season. He improved a ton throughout last year and made the final 9 d-men of the summer World Junior camp.

I am with hokydad on this one that Samuelsson is PROBABLY not in the discussion. He could break out but I put his selection of All-HE as very unlikely. We all know most of the people that vote on these things are absolute nitwits to begin with and these nitwits look at statistics (hello jcarter) and just pick guys that score points. Case in point = Colby Cohen being an AA I believe (correct me if I'm wrong). And Samuelsson is not a guy that is going to rack up points, it's just not his style/game. Throw in the fact that more likely to outscore him on the defensive end will be Dumoulin and Cross and you're not going to see 3 BC guys get All-HE, especially considering the talent out there in the league at D (Kessel will get in just because of his name and the fact that he'll put up points as well). Even if you were to see it, I think Wey is the guy to keep an eye on if you're talking about the 3rd best BC Dman as he did quite well in his NHL development camp (Washington?) and he wasn't even healthy much last year. I expect a nice jump from him.

Interesting numbers, I feel like Rawlings was overshadowed by the other rookies last year; he had an outstanding year for a freshman goalie.

Take Samuelsson off that stacked BC roster and put him on Providence or Lowell and he's a top two d-man and likely All-Hockey East. He's probably not even a top 4 dman on his own team, but is better than most in Hockey East.

Yeah much better to use the old eyeball test :

With the eyeball test and a beer you may end up with the wrong guy, with stats you never will.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

Interesting numbers, I feel like Rawlings was overshadowed by the other rookies last year; he had an outstanding year for a freshman goalie.

Rawlings' inconsistency killed him. He'd look like Thiessen in disguise one night (or better...see the home opener vs. bu), then give up 3 in the first period the next. If you caught him on a bad night you would walk away thinking he was the worst goalie in HE. Even in his good games he'd make a series of great saves and then let in a ridiculous softie. It would have been tough to come away that impressed with him when you feel like the 11 year old goalies playing during intermission would have made the save.

He'll be pushed for playing time year by Clay Witt.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

FWIW, I think it's hard for any Hockey East fan to discuss 20 or so d-men. As a BC season ticket holder, I KNOW that Dumoulin was great, however it's hard to comment on guys from around the league without just looking at numbers.

It's also tough for a BC fan to judge other team's defense considering how badly they made them all look like traffic cones last year, too. :D

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

You both make good points. I would say I feel like I can judge HE players if I see they play a few games, whether it be in person and/or on tv. I just couldn't judge them or evaluate them with as much confidence as I could a BC player that I see a few dozen times a year. But if I see someone 3 times and they show me the same thing all 3 times, then I'm comfortable giving my opinion. Otherwise, the very nature of that set of viewings would leave one to conclude that any player is just erratic and tough to judge with some upside but consistency problems.

edit - this sucker is 49 posts away from closing. Thank God.

I don't believe there is ever a time you are not comfortable giving your opinion...

Regardless,

We been through the goalies, and now top 20 D-men......anyone care to take a stab in the last 48 posts?

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

47 to go

Which HE school has the best incoming class of freshmen and does anyone know enough to take a stab at ranking them by school?

I don't know the classes but I will take a stab at the top of the list:

BU
BC
UVM
NU
after that I have no idea

And who are the top 6 - on paper - freshman forwards?

I suspect Hokydad is the only one with that kind of info... but there was a ranking put out of the top 10

According to Red Line sports, part of the Wisconsin State Journal BU has the third best incoming class of freshman i n the country..

Sahir Gill, Matt Nieto, Adam Clendeing, Charlie Coyle, and Patrick MacGregor make up the 2010 recruit class (so Far).

So here are the rankings
1. Minnesota
2. North Dakota
3. Boston University
4. Denver
5. Notre Dame
6. Boston College
7. Colorado College
8. Wisconsin
9. Minnesota-Duluth

This has BU over BC (I'm sure that will generate some errrr discussion), I also agree that VT has a good incoming class, but I admit right up front I don't know alot about the other teams incoming recruits...

I'm not too familiar with other team's incoming freshmen, I'm sure Hayes, Nieto , and Coyle will be hit the ground running. For Northeastern, Braden Pimm will likely be our top person, managing over a point per game for the last 2 seasons for the Vernon Vipers, who won the RBC for 2 years running.

For defense, Anthony Bitetto is probably the most interesting, having put up nearly identical points to Jake Newton in the USHL, so hopefully he can do the same in Hockey East. Jamie Oleksiak is our enigma, a 6'7'' defenseman, only 17, so he stands to watch if he can get with the faster pace of D1 hockey in time to make a difference.

If I'm not mistaken the rankings are based on draft worthiness, not necessarily over whether the players will immediately contribute to their college teams, so take it with a grain of salt.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

There are some 21 year old freshmen that should have a big impact early, but the guys who I'm most excited to see develop are:
Hayes
Coyle
Nieto
Brickley
Ferriero
Billy Arnold

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

I think looking at the draft gives a decent indication

Kevin Hayes (Boston College) Chicago 1 24
Charlie Coyle Boston University San Jose 1 28
Connor Brickley (Vermont) Florida 2 50
Bill Arnold (Boston College) Calgary 4 108
Cody Ferriero (Boston College) San Jose 5 127
Yasin Cisse (Boston University) Atlanta 5 150

100% correct. Still nice to see them ranking and evaluating players but the teams that recruit smaller guys that will stay 4 years (hint hint) get underestimated by Red Line and the teams that get the higher drafted kids that might leave after 1 or 2 years get nice rankings. It doesn't project future NCAA performance but tries to project future NHL performance.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011

Cody Ferriero (Northeastern) San Jose 5 127

Fixed, Cody, pimm, and bitteto should have immediate impacts, Oleksiak (eventually, he's way too young), Eibler could develop into a solid defenseman, Brodie Reid is going to be hit or miss. Excited to see how it all plays out.
