You honestly believe that a freshmen is going to come in and "easily" replace Ben Smith's offensive production?

I hope your kidding

FYI, Smith is having a very good camp, will probably end up as one of last cuts in Rockford but made a great impression. Looks like 91 birthyear, brother of Harvard Dman Chad Morin, will end up sticking with the Blackhawks. Pretty impressive job there. If so and he sticks, that will be a big blow to WJC team and will be a battle cry for MJ vs D 1.

I dont think he has to replace Smith's production to be honest. This team is going to score goals by the barrel. Smith had, what, 17 goals last year? Good number, but if Hayes/Arnold can combine for 10-15, it would be icing on the cake.

The good thing about this team is York will certainly do what he can to prevent any sort of hangover. I think this BC team is the best returning national champ since Denver in 04-05. They certainly have a chance to match what the Pios did that year.

Agree that Smith's 16 goals won't be easily replaced by any one freshman and overall...losing 28 goals from Smith, Lombardi and Price is bigger than FL stated, but I think his overall point is that BC's offense should be just fine with who they have coming back. I would certainly agree with that.

I'll tell you what. Sneep, Price, Lombardi and Smith are all going to be **** tough to replace. Luckily, I think Sneep can be replaced by a healthy cross both in terms of play (Cross probably better) and leadership. All the other defensemen have a year under their belt. MacLeod might not even crack the lineup with the surprise of Patch Alber.

Offense is another story. Good 4th liners have been staples of BC national title teams. BC usually struggled to replace these Lombardi/Price types. Even Stephen Gionta was a tough guy to replace. Go back to Lephart, Hennes, Greene, Gannon, Bertram, etc. BC blew goats after the last 3 left (Gerbe leaving and Smith/Ferriero injuries also helped them suck). Sounds like Arnold is a character kind of player can fill in that role for 1 of those guys while he gets his feet wet as a freshman. Wouldn't be totally shocked to see Alber up at forward to help fill that role as well if Macleod looks good on defense.

But... if there's one season in which BC can get away with it and having enough firepower, this is probably that type of year. It's been about a decade since they were this stacked going back to Farkas, Gionta, Bellefuille, Mottau, Orpik, Allen, Scuderi, Lephart, Kolanos in 2000 (or take out the seniors from that year and add Eaves, Forrest, and Kobasew in 2001).

I still think BC is going to fail to live up to expectations before March rolls around, give up that #1 target to NoDak, hide in the bushes and surprise all the morons that believe Team X is better than BC in the NCAAs because their PWR, seed, and rankings say so. BC loves the underdog role.

In retrospect, perhaps I could've worded that better. I'm not saying K Hayes is gonna replace Smith or Arnold is gonna replace Price or MacLeod is gonna replace Sneep. And I'm not saying that the freshman class as a whole will match or surpass the production BC lost. What I'm saying is basically what JD said- the freshman class should have no problem filling out the lineup and the BC offense should still be just fine. BC had nearly half a goal per game more than anyone else in HE. They can afford to lose a little bit of offense.

I think the "other" Hayes (Jimmy) will light it up this year as will Kreider, too. I do think BC's goal output will surpass last year's numbers.

agreed

Very difficult to replace what Smith brought to the table(over 35 points and very accountable). Arnold plays hard 2 way and might be able to fill in that style but similar to last eyar, will take until 2001/January+ to get up to speed.
Lombardi als will be tough to fill n

Zero chance Alber plays over MacLeod. great job last year and was one of the surprises of the run but right place, right time etc kicks in here.

Youre probably right but its never "zero percent" with York. This is a coach who played Peter Harrold over Ben Lovejoy on defense when everyone thought Lovejoy was the next best thing. We'll see. I'm excited to see the freshmen this year and see how they can work with the established kids.

Did you say this about Alber playing over Lyles too last year? We also have no idea how well Macleod will do, adjust to play, etc.

I just say this based on a gut feeling but I feel like Alber is a Jerry favorite. He used him at forward at times last year too over T. Atkinson (risky considering the feathers it ruffled). He has size and knows how to play defensize, hard hockey.

Hope so. Have watched him for several years. great kid. saw the exposure though kicking in in Frozen Four. With injuries, addaption etc he will play but will not play over Macleaod. I did say that about Lyles but shame on him for not getting the job done. He had the chance and choked.

From all accounts the MacLeod kid is very accountable and will fit into BC's system just fine.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011: The Quickening

I like seeing Ben Smith getting noticed here. The one thing that stood out to me after this past Detroit FF was his postseason performances. This kid was freaking clutch. So I crunched some numbers which are absolutely mind-boggling. He's basically the John Muse of BC forwards.

Postseason overall: 27GP, 16G, 17A, 33 Pts, 1.2 PPG, 25-2 Record

HE tourney: 15GP, 7G, 8A, 15 Pts, 1 PPG, 14-1 Record

NCAAs: 12GP, 9G, 9A, 18 Pts, 1.5 PPG, 11-1 Record

Frozen Four: 6GP, 6G, 5A, 11 Pts, 1.8 PPG, 5-1 Record

NC Game: 3 GP, 2G, 2A, 4 pts, 1.3 PPG, 2-1 Record

HE/NCAA Title games: 6GP, 3G, 3A, 6 Pts, 1.0 PPG, 5-1 Record

*He scored a goal in SEVEN straight postseason games to finish the 2008 title run. That is absurd, much like the rest of his stats.

*27% of his career points came in the postseason, despite only playing 16% of his career in postseason games.
