Hockey East 2010-2011: The Quickening

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011: The Quickening

Zero chance Alber plays over MacLeod. great job last year and was one of the surprises of the run but right place, right time etc kicks in here.

Not that this really matters, but you simply can't say there's a zero percent chance of this. You should know better than anyone that sometimes you just don't know what you're gonna get with freshmen.

Hope so. Have watched him for several years. great kid. saw the exposure though kicking in in Frozen Four. With injuries, addaption etc he will play but will not play over Macleaod. I did say that about Lyles but shame on him for not getting the job done. He had the chance and choked.

From all accounts the MacLeod kid is very accountable and will fit into BC's system just fine.

The key here as you mentioned is injuries. BC has a very good group of seven back there and all will see ice time. Saying Alber was exposed in the FF is not a good argument considering the combined scores of the two games. He's a perfect fit as a 6th/7th dman who can also play forward when necessary. He also contributed to the winning goal that beat Alaska in the regionals and added a goal against Miami.

MacLeod won't be given anything. He'll have to earn the ice time.

He will be given similar type respect that Samuelson and Dumoulin received. They give drafted kids an obvious slight benefit of the doubt. At 6'4"+ he has more upside to do what BC wants their D to do than Alber. They dont need much production, just guys who play accountable D and can get the puck up ice and into the hands of the F's

Alber will be thrown bones and rightly so

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011: The Quickening

You have no idea what's going to happen and neither do any of us. Let's stop pretending like we're in the future and reporting back from the Delorean, ok?

Pineault and Lovejoy had to earn it. They did not. Todd Perry had to earn it. Ryan Hayes had to earn it. These were all highly sought after players that were not given anything. None of them stuck around too long.

It's a shame we don't have Ryan Hayes. We could have had the law firm of Hayes, Hayes and Hayes this season.

Exactly.

And that is true but their comp was not Patch....

A recruited walk on getting zero money. If you dont think a scholarship kid gets the benefit of the doubt over a walk on, than we differ in out view. BC is as fair as any but lets not get carried away with being so "regal"

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011: The Quickening

Recruited walk-ons sometimes work out. Ben Smith was a walk-on. So were Gilroy and Curry at BU.

Bottom line, without saying anything about anyone, we have no idea what is going to happen with Alber and Macleod or anyone else (in case Shea gets a case of the "softies" again... aka Shea Butter).

Ben Smith did not walk on, please...

Ben Smith commits to Boston College

FRAMINGHAM, MA-The Junior Bruins are proud to announce the college commitment of long time Bruin player Ben Smith. After a long recruiting process that involved nearly a dozen schools over the last couple of years Ben Smith made the call to coach Jerry York on Wednesday evening to let him know that he will call the Heights home after this coming season. In the end the decision came down to Boston College and Harvard University. Smith accepted the scholarship offer the defending Hockey East Champions made him. Smith will be arriving at BC in the fall of 2006. Smith will join former Bruins forward and then BC junior Pat Gannon in '06.
Smith, an Avon, Connecticut native, has spent three seasons with the Little Bruins and then part of last season with the Junior Bruins. He will be back in a Little Bruins sweater this fall as he enters his senior year at Westminster. Smith, a center, has the whole package. He does everything at a high level and is the consummate team player. There is nothing he won't do for his team or a coach. "Peter and I have long told college coaches and pro scouts that Ben is as complete a player that we have had. He skates well, plays physical, is creative and intelligent with the puck, has a great shot, has a scoring touch, knows how to play in his own, can play the wing if needed, back checks, can play both sides of special teams, knows how to use his teammates and wins a ton of face-offs," commented coach Chris Masters on the type of player Smith is.
Smith first came to the Bruins as so many of their midget and junior players do-through the programs spring/summer AAA tournament teams. Smith first played for the Bruins at the 1988 Prospects tournament in 2001. That '88 team went on to win 3 of the next 4 Prospects tournaments (2001-2002-2004).
In his first season with the Little B's Smith was only an eight grader and played in a handful of games as a thirteen year old. The next season, 2002-2003, Smith picked up 26 points in 30 games played as the Little Bruins went 29-6-1. The next season, as a captain, he led the team in scoring while setting records for goals (29), assists (34) and points (63) in a single season. That was a banner year for the Little B's as Smith and company had a 34-6-2 season. Last season with the junior team Smith had 28 points in 32 games. During the winter at Westy he was second on his team in scoring with a 20-26-46 line.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011: The Quickening

Is it possible Smith paid his own way his first year/first couple years?

Bottom line is I've seen enough over the years to know that nobody is handed anything at BC. You earn your time on the ice, no matter who you are.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011: The Quickening

When's Media Day? Curious if the composite TV schedule is released the same day...

Maybe

What you are saying about BC is exactly the same at every other top program

I doubt Wisconsin, Michigan, Miam of Ohio, BU, Denver, ND or any of the other top programs are making back alley deals.

They are no different

I'm not speaking for other programs. I'm speaking of the program I once covered and know about. That's all.

I believe Smith had an academic scholarship and walked on to the hockey team (albeit recruited by BC) without a guarantee of playing.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011: The Quickening

All I know is that a BC annual report for the athletic department featured Smith and said he was a freshman walk-on. That's 100% true regardless of what the Jr. Bruins website says.

I'd imagine it's possible to be both. A player can play in a league like the EJHL during high school and then come to college were he's added as depth. We pulled up some kid who attended Northeastern when we had no depth last year, and he had played in the EJHL the year before.

Re: Hockey East 2010-2011: The Quickening

Ben Smith was one of the top 88's in the country and was heavily recruited. He ws a scholarship athlete, maybe 2/4 or 3/4, more than Bonino for example got but please, he was in a total other class than Alber was as a recruit. A great pick up and a life saver but to put him and Ben Smith in the same catagory as recruits is laughable.

Smith centered their top line as a sophmore when they won the natl championship.
