Hobey

Re: Hobey

Any Hobey discussion that doesn't include Northern Michigan's Mark Olver is seriously lacking. The 5th leading scorer in the country, leader in the CCHA, among the national leaders in both goals and assists, 15 points in 8 February, scoring and setting up big goals down the stretch to help his team rally for a first round playoff bye AND being a pretty solid defensive forward as well. How he was left off the fan voting list, especially being a pre-season All-CCHA selection is baffling.

Agreed.

Its not right but its because its not a national powerhouse and not ranked night enough in the rankings to get the attention. Very few games are on TV nationally which also makes it difficult, he should probably be in the discussion as far as the top 10 candidates but anything more then that is just not going to happen unless Northern was in the top 5. Like i said its night right but its just that way it is and is not that baffling...

Players from perennial power Robert Morris, national contender Canisius, superpower Union and TV ratings king Merrimack made the list!

Re: Hobey

Nyquist is having a great year, but I think Denver's Marc Cheverie also seriously in the Hobey conversation. Chevy is literally carrying Denver to a top national ranking on his back. DU's offense is only 13th nationally but the team is ranked first nationally largely because Chevy is rocking a top national saves percentage of .938 against the toughest league competition. He's also second in GAA and first in shutouts, nationally. He is also a WCHA all-Academic team member. If Chevy were playing in Hockey East or the CCHA this year, he'd be a .945 goalie and the ECAC, he'd be a .950 goalie, and in the AHA or CHA, he'd probably be .955.

Both players are clearly important to their teams, but I don't think anyone has the inside track just yet.

I agree with you 100 percent. If it wasn't for Chevy, North Dakota could have very well swept the season series with the Pios as opposed to the other way around. I've watched him steal about a half dozen games for his team, which is pretty darn good as it is. If I had a vote, it would go to Marc Cheverie.

Saying that, for some reason, goalies have had a very difficult time winning the Hobey, as the voters apparently prefer guys who put the puck in the net.

Agree about goalies....see Howard, Jimmy...current Red Wings number 1 guy in net and having a great year. Talk about carrying a team (if only we could score one goal without a toe in the crease) :)

IMO, its about points....if he's not scoring he's setting someone else up to score. Same end result.

Re: Hobey

This is one of those years where the Hobey will be a toss-up. Cheverie is excellent, but not spectacular enough to win as a goalie (a-la Ryan Miller). Polacek is great (and would get my vote) but plays on a low-visibility team in a mid-tier conference. Nyquist is a sophomore on a non-tourney team.

There's no Ryan Duncan or Kevin Porter this year... let alone a Gionta/Miller-level choice.

Nyquist should be the frontrunner next year if he keeps up the pace and helps return Maine to national powerhouse status.

Maybe someone will emerge in the conference playoffs.

Re: Hobey

Maine is 2 spots out of NCAAs. They still have a pretty good chance of being a tournament team. And I don't see what being a sophomore has to do with anything. Wilson was not only a sophomore last year, but also the 2nd best candidate on his own team. And he made the Hat Trick. Nyquist has 4 more points than anyone else and is scoring .15 points per game more than anyone else. And for people arguing that he doesn't score enough goals, again -- see Colin Wilson. He wasn't even in the top 30 in goals last year. Nyquist already has just as many goals as Wilson did last year and only 1 fewer assist in 11 fewer games.

Re: Hobey

I'm going with Cheverie or Rakshani. I'm not a Denver fan, but take either of them off that roster and they aren't half the team they are now. No thanks on Nyquist or Butler. Both are solid players, but neither dominates games like Hobey Baker winners in the past.

Jimmy Howard should have been on that Olympic team instead of Tim Thomas. Not even close.

I'm not arguing that he doesn't deserve to win (I don't know, I haven't seen him). I'm arguing that he won't win.

As for your Wilson comparison, I'm a little mystified that he won. I think it was the hype that put him over the edge. The award usually goes to someone with a "he should be in the NHL already" buzz. I don't feel that about Nyquist.

Plus, it's easier to make the case that his play elevates the whole enterprise if he's on a top 5 or 10 team. On top of that voters are more likely to pick a senior than a sophomore. So I think guys like Rakhshani or Geoffrion both have a better chance of winning.

That was my point exactly; aside from Duncan, a rare case, I find that they are often reluctant to award the Hobey to a sophomore (or Junior). There are so many Seniors also worthy who don't have another shot at it. Also, having seen Nyquist play, there is no reason to think he won't play at this level again next year (perhaps even better if the Black Bears can improve around him); hence my original statement that I don't think he'll win it this year, but will be a lock for the top 10 the next two years (IF he doesn't go pro).

Re: Hobey

Was Kayaria the only freshman to win, let alone make the top 10? I can't remember if there has been another freshman that has made the top 10!!

Kariya dominated College Hockey as a freshman. It was probably the greatest season achievement I've ever seen in my 30+ years of watching the sport.

33 goals, 91 assists, 124 points in 51 games, helping the University of Maine to a 42–1–2 record

Are you talking about this season! Great Stats!

Is this right though? because the NCAA record book has this as the single season record for assist!

Correction!!!! Maine says he only had 75 assist that year! Don't know why Wiki and another site said 91

Where did you get those totals? Wasn't it 25-75-100?
