He's dead, Jim.

Re: He's dead, Jim.

Gordie was the man. The stupid NHL wouldn't recognize his non-NHL stats, so he was the true leader until Gretzky said "F it. I'll just top those totals, too." ;)

Re: He's dead, Jim.

I know that it was a different era and all, but it still absolutely boggles my mind that Gretzky has more assists than anyone else in the NHL has had points. It's astonishing what he was able to do out there.

I am not a fan of the untouchable stars, like Gretzky, but have to give credit where credit is due. Although I would have loved to see what Mario could have done without a bad back, and you know, cancer and all.

I still remember the only time I saw Gretzky play in person, at the old Chicago Stadium in 1985. A decent Blackhawks team was giving the defending (and forthcoming) Stanley Cup champs a pretty good battle, with a great battle in the second period as all 10 skaters squared off about midway through. For two solid periods the entire Stadium crowd was chanting "Gretzky SUCKS! Gretzky SUCKS!" and not just when he was on the ice or playing the puck. It seemed constant. The Hawks kept him bottled up and off the board and through two periods the game was tied 2-all. Then came the 3rd period. In about a 5 minute span the Oilers scored 5 goals and Gretzsky set them all up. 5 assists in about 5 minutes. Never saw anything like it before, and in the era of the Michelin Man goalie we'll never see the likes of it again. We should all suck so much.

Re: He's dead, Jim.

I still remember when Gretzky and Broten 'fought'. Brots and he tangled a bit behind the net, Neil gave Wayne a, "wtf you doing?" look, Wayne for whatever reason dropped his gloves (pissed at the North Stars ending their season in '91?), Neil grabbed him, threw/landed a few punches and then the refs got in there. :D

Re: He's dead, Jim.

Thomas Menino, Boston's longest serving Mayor, has died at 71 to cancer.
"Mayor Mumbles", one of those few politicians who was realistic about his suitability for higher office, and an endless source of humorous malaprops, particularly with Boston athletes.

...Mr. Mayor had “Varitek splitting the uprights,’’ and spoke of “Wes Wekler, Jim Lomberg, Donald Sterns, Vince Wilcock, Gonk, and KJ and Hondo (Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo).’’ He was always a good sport about it, even when ESPN featured him bollixing names of Hub sports heroes.

Re: He's dead, Jim.

It's a very sad day for fans out there in USCHO-land of a great St. Cloud cuisine. Val died. :(

Good burger joints like that are hard to find today, so you treasure them when you have them.

When I'm home in Toronto I try to make it to Johnny's Hamburgers. The menu, the decor, hell even the staff, have not changed since I was in high school. And thank goodness for that! :D

The burgers aren't what get people going back to Val's, it's the fries. The burgers are poor McD's rip-offs, but the fries are great. Oh, the fries... and the soon-to-be-transparent white paper sack.

Re: He's dead, Jim.

Yeah, the hockey puck burgers are just there in some sort of vain attempt to soak up the grease from those awesome fries.

Yeah, that's usually the case - including at Johnny's.

One other culinary joy of my youth were the numerous fish & chip shops that are no more. Hand dipped halibut and thick cut fries made right in front of you. I'm drooling as I type! Pass a napkin please :)

Re: He's dead, Jim.

Former Calgary Stampeder, Stamps co-owner and philanthropist John Forzani.

Calgary-born Forzani died early Friday morning after his immediate family members arrived, less than two days after suffering a stroke or massive heart attack at his Palm Springs residence.

The St. Francis high school and Utah State alumni was 67.

The man who won a Grey Cup ring with the Stamps went on to co-own the team and founded a sports wear empire will be remembers for his kindness, business acumen and humour, said grieving brother Tom.

“He was a prominent Canadian, Calgarian and great guy,” he said.

“To his friends, it’ll be his sense of humour and with the public, it’ll be his great business mind.”

Forzani was an offensive lineman with the Stampeders from 1971 to 1976.

Soon to be? It's transparent by the time they hand the bag to you. :D

First time I went there, I was cautioned to get the small fries, and NOT to get the large. I am glad I listened to that advice. I swear you get a half-pound of fries in the small order.

I can't believe I lived long enough to see halibut selling for $30 per pound. Sadly out of my price range.

No kidding. Used to be two big pieces of fish and a pile of fries were about six or seven bucks.
I went to grab a bag of frozen salmon fillets today, but $22 was a bit much. :(
