He's dead, Jim.

Re: He's dead, Jim.

All this decade, too. They turned me on to punk. Great loss to that genre.

Edit: Dee Dee OD'd. Original member. So close. http://cdn.alltheragefaces.com/img/faces/large/disappointed-so-close-freddie-mercury-l.png

Marianne Shaw sat in front of me in Latin in 10th grade, and used to write down the lyrics of groups she went to see in the city on the weekends (this was back in the days where a pretty girl would never, ever be carded). When she showed me Ramones lyrics for the first time I couldn't believe she was serious.

The old legend went that at one of their first shows, they were to play 60 minutes. They played 45, and the owner didn't want to pay them. They replied, "We played 60 minutes of songs in 45 minutes." :D

Underappreciated until it was too late for them. Such a shame.

I'm not sure if it came in time to make a difference for them, but few bands are considered more influential (maybe MC5, Wire, Television, Gang of Four) of great music that came after.

Re: He's dead, Jim.

Besides Dee Dee, isn't it cancer that claimed them all? Geographical cause, all growing up in the same area? Something?

I did get to see them once, although well past their prime as a group. Maybe the mid-nineties? Still pretty much the same act as it had always been. When I was at UMaine, there was a kid lived across campus, the spitting image of Joey Ramone. Whenever I'd see him, it'd be, "hey, there's Joey Ramone".

If Lou Reed and Iggy are considered the grandfathers of punk(not really punk, but major influences on what would become punk), The Ramones were probably the first true punk band, the one that inspired the whole scene. They're the ones that the British kids heard, and off it went.

Local radio playing the ramones on and off all day. Never was a huge fan but understand how important they were to the punk scene

All had cancer, yes.

I also saw them in the mid-90s, right after they released "I Don't Wanna Grow Up" (Tom Waits cover) and recently after the Loco Live release. They pretty much played the same set as on that album. In their prime? No, but they hadn't really slipped at all. It was pure awesomeness.

And yes, the Ramones (IMO) are the first true punk band. As you mentioned, there were influences beforehand, but they weren't quite punk.

And of course, I have to link to the punk motto:

Re: He's dead, Jim.

I think MC5, The Stooges, New York Dolls, A Band Called Death and Television would like to have word with some of you as well as Blondie, Talking Heads, Patti Smith, The Velvet Underground and others.

That said I love The Ramones and would never slight their place in history.

MC5, sure. The Stooges was Iggy :p , NYD maybe. Never heard of ABCD, and didn't Television come after the Ramones? Never really heard them, just heard about them.

Re: He's dead, Jim.

Whoever thought of that promotion should go into the advertising HOF. Not just because it's great, but, 50 years later, you still remember the product! THAT is marketing.

Similar kudos to the person(s) who came up with the Beehive Syrup hockey photos.

These photos were available (for free) through a marketing promotion from the St. Lawrence Starch Company (in Port Credit, Ontario) from 1934 until 1967. There were a total of 1,026 Bee Hive hockey photos available in the catalogue

Also, hockey coins came in boxes of Shirriff desserts and Salada tea. You could buy plastic plaques to display your coin collections.

Re: He's dead, Jim.

Cool. Wheaties had a promotion involving miniature license plates from around the world (suitable for display on your bicycle). IIRC, you had to send away for them.

The ones from the US states were legendary. I had friends whose older brothers had collections of those. They weren't chintzy*, either, they were die cut metal and they had a great feel to them. When they rusted out they looked even more legit. They were at about the same order of coolness as ski area patches.

* I'm honestly not sure whether this is an offensive term, now.

Re: He's dead, Jim.

Perhaps I should include a spoiler alert, but his impending demise has been reported already.

Didn't agree with his taste in women, but I still enjoyed him in my youth.

In ‘‘Life with Archie,’’ Keller is a married military veteran and newly elected senator who’s pushing for more gun control in Riverdale after his husband was involved in a shooting.

And here...we...go. /Ledger
