Re: He's dead, Jim.

Are there any storytellers still around? And any on radio / TV?

There used to be an XM station called PRX that hosted work by storytellers. 90% of everything is crap, so the vast majority was unlistenable, but occasionally somebody would take a break from the 20-something gay comes out to his Iowa dad cliche to actually say something interesting.

Shep was amazing, and I doubt there were many like him even at the time. Those jewels are rare in all ages. Right now there's probably one toiling in obscurity in some godforsaken corner of YouTube.

Re: He's dead, Jim.

I love the fact that this movie has such a huge following -- it's probably the only reason why anybody under 50 has heard of Shep. Much like how the movie of The Princess Bride got people to read the book.

Gateway drugs are a good thing.

Now go listen this, immediately (if you're under 40 and/or have a modern attention span, skip to about 32:00), and imagine what it was like in the total mental desert of junior high school on Long Island to find this during late night random radio searches.

I think i might still have my secret decoder from that old show. I know i have a ring somewhere that i got by sending in 10 box tops from Ovaltine. Darn that is like going back to the dark ages.:o
Not boxtops from Ovaltine--It was the little paper liner from the top of the jar

In those days there would usually be a little coupon, with a space to put your name and address and the terms. So many box tops. So much money. And the notation "in coin." They didn't want you sending in stamps.

Quaker Oats sponsored Sergeant Preston of the Yukon and had a promotion of putting very official looking deeds for "one square inch" of the Yukon in "specially marked boxes" of puffed wheat and rice. You could also send in some box tops and money (no stamps) and they'd send you a neat little leatherette pouch filled with "Klondike dirt." The fact that the dirt more likely came from Yucca Flats or Love Canal was lost on little kids. "It's an actual bag full of Klondike dirt." You could add a little water and have a bag full of Klondike mud.

Whoever thought of that promotion should go into the advertising HOF. Not just because it's great, but, 50 years later, you still remember the product! THAT is marketing.

I've always been attracted to fussy little pieces of paper with faux "official" seals on them. Of course, the square inches of Klondike weren't contiguous, which would have made touring my holdings difficult.
