Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Well that happened. Consolations games are difficult under the best circumstances and with the snow today, it probably felt like a mail in job. Looks like Madsen the rest of the way. And we'll need to recruit another goalie for next year to back him up.

We need four points and nothing less this weekend.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

It wasn't just Lackey. The team didn't show up. It was embarrassing to sit there wearing a Harvard sweatshirt and realize that this team doesn't care about not giving an effort in front of their fans or the Boston crowd.

Disappointing, but not unexpected from this team, that is missing something. They were lucky to beat Minnesota in the tournament, I watched the game on Fox Sports North. That was the last good team they've beaten, and how good is Minnesota?

You sit through a non-effort against a team, Northeastern, that has pride, and frankly is a better team than Harvard, then watch two outstanding teams go at it for 60 minutes, and you realize that this team can't compete with those teams.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in Beanpot consolation games. They are a real kick in the nuts for anyone because no one cares. I wish they would eliminate the game.

Maybe for you and I watching but not for the players. College kids should be hard core, go at it 100% every game

Can't buy that excuse and says a lot about this generation of players if they ever represent their school with that attitude

It's not only this generation but in prior years, we haven't given a full effort in the consolation game. In fact, at one point, Billy dressed JV players to give them a taste of skating on the Old Garden ice. Very classy thing for him to do but I'm pretty sure that the Beanpot organizers weren't pleased with that gesture. With the advent of PWR, even consolation games mean something despite Harvard's lack of effort yesterday.

I agree that this team seems to lack that killer instinct and push to be better. Maybe we need a little nasty mixed in? Whatever, we better have a full 60 minutes for both RPI and Union this weekend.

I care. Always have, always will.

That said, I have seen enough Beanpot consolation games over the years to realize that the players don't care and frankly, the coaches don't either by consistently not dressing their "best" line-up and using the game to play back-ups and seniors.

The players and coaches should care, but based on what my eyes have seen, I don't believe that is the case.

Lastly, the league (ECAC) doesn't care either given the scheduling around the 2nd Monday of the Beanpot.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

I couldn't fathom a player mailing in an effort. You want the guys who are competing over parking space at practice. If you can't get up for a game at the Garden, look in the mirror. The Dustin Pedroia types who compete 24/7

I know what your saying but if that is the attitude, ouch

NU didn't seem to have an issue playing hard

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

But doesn't this game actually have PWR implications? Regardless of the tournament status, it was still an OOC that a team should want to win.

yup.

bu losing the early 2nd monday game a couple years ago kept them out of the ncaa tourney. if they won that they were in.

No disagreement here. They should want to play hard and win. But again, this tournament does not bring out the best in Harvard and in the last 25 years or so since they won it, you can see that the Crimson treat this game as an intrusion on their league schedule. Even changing the academic schedule so that they play games in January before the Beanpot has not helped them. That is why I am in favor of them dropping out altogether and bringing in UMass Lowell. It would be a more competitive tournament with a stronger fan turnout. Harvard can still play OOC tournaments like the Shileagh and Mariucci along with one or two games against UNH, Merrimack, BC or BU.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

ECAC teams have rescheduled Harvard games for years to accommodate Harvard's Beanpot schedule and it doesn't seem to matter. The Beanpot is an important college hockey event and a great experience for players and fans, as least those from BC and BU. Northeastern has seldom been competitive and Harvard has also been a non-factor for the past decade, or more.

I don't think it is as important as it was 25 years ago. When the pros started to draft and develop kids who opted for only one or two seasons of college hockey, it changed everything. The only tournaments that matter are the end of season conference and NCAAs. Everything else is secondary.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Mazzolini, in his first year as Harvard coach, skipped the Beanpot luncheon because he did not understand the importance of attending. Harvard played that way this year. Maybe if you sit home and watch it on TV it does not matter as much, but if you are attending with fans of other schools, you would like to see a hard fought game by the team you support. If Harvard wanted to back out of the tournament it would be seen as typically elitist of the school.

As for the ECAC tournament, they played well and earned the tournament victory, then lost to a not-so-great Nebraska-Omaha, in a regional that was a red carpet to Boston. The ECAC tournament is difficult to win and a ticket to the NCAA's but it is still on a small stage, barely televised and before a small crowd. Beating two local powers before a big, adverse, crowd is more significant than winning the Shillelagh tournament.

Maybe the kids don't see it that way. You are assuming that they share your enthusiasm and view of the game. The first night was not a sellout. I saw a lot of empty seats. The Beanpot isn't what it was in the eighties and nineties. It's pretty obvious that the tournament means more to BC and BU than Harvard.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Well now it's gone from bad to worse. A killer loss tonight especially since we so badly outplayed RPI. Kasdorf stood on his head but we missed so many glorious opportunities including a number of two on ones that we could not finish. And our two Achilles heels reared their ugly heads tonight. Defense and goaltending. Madsen let the first one in where he could have made the save and on RPI's second goal, our five skaters just stood around looking at each other while the puck dropped right in front of an RPI player who deposited it in the net. Brutal.

We just don't seem to have it this year. Too many one goal losses where we either start slow or can't finish the deal. The BU and Quinnipiac games were the killers. We haven't been the same since. And then tonight. It leaves you shaking your head wondering if this team will get it together come playoff time.

We have to run the table at this point and get help in order to 1. ensure we make the NCAAs and 2. stay in the East. Neither are sure bets at this point. We simply cannot afford another loss this season. We don't play anyone ranked in front of us so we have everything to lose and nothing to gain. Unless we meet Quinny in the finals of the ECACs and beat them.

Tonight just plain sucked wind. As frustrating a loss at Bright as I have seen in a long time. Maybe since the Army game in November of '89 when we raised the national championship banner. Ugh.

Well, now that Yale is ahead of you in the PWR, you could possibly get them in the ECACs as well, and pick up some points if they win two.

Yeah, something to look forward to. We should be a better team than what PWR indicates at the moment. We'll see...

That loss was a killer. Too much individual effort and not enough puck movement. Team needs to get back to basics. Need a statement game against Union.
