Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

I always hope it's Cornell...I like the antagonism..but RPI should bring a good crowd as well. This isn't going to help attendance next year at this time:

The odds of a basketball tournament in Philadelphia hurting attendance any more than, unless I'm mistaken, the fact that QF weekend is the first weekend of spring break seems unlikely to say the least.

I understand, talking about Harvard fan attendance, it is a drop in the bucket.

Hockey attendance has been so-so for many years since the program fell on hard times in the late nineties through the new decade. Unless Cornell is in town, we don't draw and certainly don't sell out like we used to. Basketball is the new 'new' on campus. I would think spring break would have more to do with attendance woes than the Ivy League tournament. Just hoping the band shows up tonight.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Harvard certainly came to play tonight showing no rust at all. For the first two periods, we dominated especially in the second period. Then things got out of hand with a lot of chippy play initiated by RPI. Starting with an absolutely garbage, cheap shot knee on knee hit on Kyle Criscuolo. Fortunately Kyle was okay and played the rest of the game but it got ugly real fast. RPI can't skate with us and so they decided the only way to win was to rough us up. They make Cornell look halfway respectable. At one point, while play was headed into the Harvard zone, an RPI D man got on top of Criscuolo, kept shoving his head into the ice and wouldn't let him get up. Unreal. The refs are largely to blame as they put their whistles in their pockets for the game and didn't call anything until the last minute of the third. But that doesn't excuse their cheap shots and hits after the whistle. Appert must be so proud. Wow.

Sean Malone got us started with a laser of a wrist shot on a great rush up the middle of the RPI D zone. Seb Lloyd made it 2-0 taking a nice feed from Ryan Donato near the left post. Colin Blackwell was the beneficiary of a batted puck that fell at his feet with Kasdorf caught at the opposite post - Blackwell slammed it home for a 3-0 lead. Then the five minute major for the hit on Criscuolo and Seb Lloyd got his second of the game tipping a blast from Ryan Donato from the point.

From there, Harvard got careless (on that same PP, we gave up a breakaway shortie) and then early in the third, RPI scored again when we left one of their forwards alone in front of Madsen. We weathered that storm and came back a few minutes later with Sean Malone spinning in front of RPI's backup goalie and depositing a forehand behind him.

Tyler Moy, Victor Newell and Jake Olson did not dress tonight. I think I saw Moy and he was wearing a walking boot. Wasn't much of a limp so I'm hoping he'll be ready next weekend.

We have to ignore the after the whistle stuff and focus on our skating game. When we were moving our feet, we completely broke down RPI's forecheck and were in their zone before you could blink an eye. When we got complacent, things broke down quickly.

The ice wasn't great after the first six or seven minutes of each period. The weather this week had an effect. Won't be any better tomorrow.

Moy got hurt against Clarkson and did not play against SLU. We need him so hopefully he will be ok by next weekend.

Wood should have been D'Qd. That kind of play has no business in the game.

If Harvard plays their game, Kasdorf has to be near perfect for RPI to win. They can't get mired in the shananigans after the whistle.

First goal tomorrow is huge. Onward!

I saw the intentional hit "kneeing" on Criscuolo. That was Wood. Here is a hit from behind by Wood that drew blood in last years Mayors Cup which got him an ECAC two-game suspension. I would not be surprised if the league gives him a game suspension. RPI had a great athletic director who would not have tolerated this BS but he left for the Air Force academy.

Absolutely right about the first goal. Puts even more pressure on them to open up their game. And five goals with Vesey being held without a goal says something about our depth.

I don't blame Kasdorf for the loss. He had no chance on Malone's first goal or the other three. Harvard made some beautiful plays. And we hit the crossbar twice and the post a couple of times. We play tomorrow like we did in the first half of the second period tonight, we'll be on to Lake Placid.

Wow. This kid is some kind of jerk. What a punk. Grant and Wilson aren't far behind. How does Appert keep a kid like Wood on the team?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

The best thing you can say about tonight was that we got out alive and are on our way to Lake Placid. This was a tractor pull of a series and RPI did everything but try and break panes of glass. We took a beating but kept our cool and made them pay.

Wild first period with goals coming fast and furious towards the end of the period. We played a little too loose defensively and our passing wasn't nearly as sharp as last night. Much like last night, we took control in the second with a beauty of a backhander by Malone and Clay Anderson's wrister coming down the boards. Vesey's early goal in the third put it away and then RPI basically threw in the towel as Harvard poured it on with Vesey's breakaway, Jaw's PP blast and Ryan Donato's wrister on a two on one with Lloyd.

Still trying to figure out why Appert went with Hackett. Kasdorf had to be sick or hurt because I can't think of any scenario where starting a backup goalie who is a freshman when you are facing elimination is a good move.

Hilarious to see RPI complaining about their penalties. Gillespie couldn't shut up in the box after he ran Madsen late in the game. This team is so clueless it isn't funny.

And to make the weekend a complete success, Dartmouth eliminated Yale. Grant must have stood on his head. The shot disparity was enormous tonight. This should help us in terms of possibly staying in the East. Yale should travel given this is the second year in a row they have lost in the quarters and this year, to a team that wasn't a TUC.

On to Placid!!!

Enough said. Good luck in Placid!

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Congratulations. See you next weekend.

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on what happens with Cornell and Quinnipiac today. If the Red manage to pull the upset, we see them on Friday and you'll be playing Dartmouth. Who could have seen that coming a few weeks ago?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Congratulations. See you next weekend.

The Clarkson-SLU rivalry is one of the best in college hockey and I would have watched the games if Harvard had not been playing this weekend. Congrats on making it to Lake Placid.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2015-2016 - All things Bright and Beautiful

Some leftover thoughts from this weekend's series with RPI:

1. Teddy was smart not to play the first or second lines in the last five minutes of the game. RPI had clearly thrown in the towel and there was genuine concern of injury to one of our top players (the Vesey hit as Exhibit A). Doesn't say much for the Engineers but then again, that's the way they chose to play all weekend. They were chippy and dirty all weekend.

2. Regarding the Vesey hit by Bourbonnais, what does it say about RPI that their most skilled player takes a shot like that to a star player from the opposing team? To me it speaks of a culture and tone set by the coach that encourages physical play that goes beyond the rule book. And it confirms the fact that RPI knew it couldn't play with Harvard and that its' only chance for success was to physically wear us down and hope that we made enough mistakes to give them the series. That wasn't going to happen.

3. Appert may have done himself no favors regarding his locker room. How do you explain pulling Kasdorf on Friday and then benching him last night for a backup freshman with zero playoff experience? Unless Kasdorf was sick or injured, it was a slap in the face to a senior who carried the team to the playoffs.

4. Liked what I saw from our freshmen in this series especially Baughman and Dumbrovsky. Both kids played well together and we've got a lot to look forward to watching them the next three seasons. Ryan Donato has really matured as a player and anchored the third line in place of Tyler Moy. None of the frosh looked out of place.

5. 12 players got at least one point last night which highlighted our depth. Three goals from the D and contributions from Seb Lloyd and Jake Horton. Good time for all to be involved.

6. The only real downers were the power play which was awful (RPI had something to do with that - probably their lone bright spot) and the first line getting shut down until Vesey took over in the third period.

I don't think we'll see an upset in Hamden today. Or Chestnut Hill for that matter. One more win and we should punch our ticket to the NCAAs. I'd like to win the conference tourney again but an NCAA championship would be sweeter for sure!

It was reported on the RPI thread that Kasdorf pulled a groin muscle in the Friday morning skate. He gave it a go on Friday, but was not 100% and did not improve overnight.
