Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Is it a given that we will be without Fry, Picard and Pucci? Not to take anything away from these players because they are all very talented but Pucci is coming off a severe concussion and I didn't realize Fry and Picard were under consideration. Not having Fry with Jillian Dempsey lost to graduation leaves the Crimson with some severe scoring problems.

This will be a bridge year to 2014-2015. The best we can hope for is that we finish sixth or seventh in the conference and pull an upset in the quarters. That would be huge.

I think we can officially raise the expectations from a " bridge year" and a sixth or seventh place finish. There is no question the bench is short and there is virtually no depth. None the less, the Cornell game showed they can play at a very high level against a highly rated opponent. It was also encouraging that the following day, even though they looked a step slower from the Cornell game, they still managed to beat Colgate 2-0. It was especially encouraging that the 3 stars of the game were all freshmen. Rachlin, Mastel, and Daniels may not be Pucci, Picard, and Fry, but they have all shown they can play at the college level from Day 1. Why not an NCAA berth this year?

Thanks for THIS! Some of us saw early on (the McGill game) that this was going to be an exciting team; just needed to be patient and let them (new coach, young players, small squad) work things out. Lots of challenges, seemingly lots of determination addressing them. Cornell game a solid tie, but was fully expecting a win. (Edney was shaken up, doubled-over on the ice to Maschmeyer's right, for at least 5+ seconds when Saulnier scored C's second goal---granted, a beautiful shot---from the same side, a virtual PPG.) Had we gotten the W I was ready to post to the now defunct Who Stops Minnesota? thread: "Harvard, in the 2015 Frozen Four, when Minnesota is 130-0!" Alas, North Dakota got there first. But the Olympians are going to be returning to a very good team.

It's not out of the question. It will depend in part on how they do out of conference starting with BU on Friday. Lots of variables to consider and I agree that they have been a surprise especially with their North Country sweep. Mashmeyer has been their best player by far. She'll need to be if they have any hope of making it to the NCAAs.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Very good game tonight by both teams. The first period was some of the best women's hockey I have seen in a while. BU came out flying and put pressure on Harvard's D right away. It took Harvard a few minutes to get going but once they found their stride, they were all over BU's D and took it to them the rest of the period. Gina Mac got a nice goal knocking in a rebound from Dylan Crugnale who retrieved a puck shot off the boards and slipped it to Gina on the other side of the net.

Second period was again a slow starter for the Crimson but as the period wore on, Harvard got more chances and really poured it on in a five minute stretch where they had at least six glorious chances to score (Mary Parker missed a wide open net when the puck hopped over her stick). Sam Reber connected on a forehand shot off a rebound from a shot from Hillary Crowe coming down the right side.

Third period was back and forth at the start and for most of the first ten minutes until Elizabeth Parker made a very nice play along the boards corralling the puck and sending it cross ice to Miye D'Oench who one timed a slap shot past Sperry. That pretty much iced it although BU turned up the heat and made things interesting in the later stages of the game. The shot totals don't really tell the whole story of this game.

Had to like Harvard's aggressive forecheck and positional play tonight. They were confident with and without the puck and took away most of BU's passing lanes. They also spent less time cycling and more time setting up in front of the net. Much better looks tonight than in previous games.

Both goalies played very well. Maschmeyer was outstanding as usual stopping a shorthanded breakaway in the first and denying BU any second chances until they scored late in the game (not her fault). Sperry was also very good and she will keep BU in a lot of games this year.

Got a chance to talk to Joe Bertagna, HE commish. Always love catching up with Joe. Apparently he and several of his classmates were at the BC game on Wednesday (Dave Hynes, Bill Corkery and Bob McManama). He mentioned that the guys really don't recognize the game from when they played. To be expected. Joe also mentioned that he thinks HE women this year aren't having a great year outside of BU and BC. Teams just aren't that strong. We shouldn't have that much trouble with UNH or UCONN this year. Northeastern may be another matter given that it is the Fenway Frozen game. We'll see..

Bring on Dartmouth. Big Green off to an unusually slow start this year but you can throw out the records for this game. The gals from Hanover will be primed for sure. Hope the Lady Crimson go easy on the turkey.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Computer died and lost my password do took me a couple of days to comment.

I could not do better than Skate70 in recapping the game.

I would like to add that I find Sydney Daniels, a freshman forward, very impressive. Lots of energy getting to herself to the puck and also excellent sense of where the puck is going to be. I think she is an excellent addition to the team.

Agree about Daniels. She is starting to 'get it' as are most of the freshmen. Put her with Lyndsey Fry and Sam Reber and that will be one heck of a line.

Still would like to see minutes spread out over the entire team. The lack of depth will show up unless the coach commits to giving minutes to the other players. It will really help in late February and March.

Sorry about your computer. If you are not a Mac user, consider becoming one. Like one of my ex girlfriends, low maintenance, attractive and very intelligent. I renew my vows to my Mac every few years and I'm never disappointed. :)

Apparently your ex girlfriend was not the "Apple of your eye" like your Mac. ;)

I have been a Mac guy since 2005, iBook and then MacBook Pro. Sadly I drowned it (about 1 tablespoon of tea on the keybooard). It is currently at a local computer tech who does good work and is reasonable. Currently using an ancient Dell that used to be my work laptop. When I retired I went to turn it in to IT people and they said "OMG, you still have one of THOSE!! If you turn it in we will throw it away, just keep it" It works but does not recall any of my passwords.

So very, very painful to see Dartmouth seemingly less than competitive against likes of, Argh ... Crimson. Oh, yes, pain. See (and read as above) of your 'joy' - the easy back and forth and bantering, say. Argh. Woe- woe is myself with the read. Not personal, visceral. Most Green hockey fans most want to win against you program likely ... methinks. Maybe not. And as well our coach such a good one who helps young women to grow! Oh pain, Oh dreaded possible (even) loss or defeat.

I almost even at advanced (some) age drive from CT to, Cheer On The Team In Green in you (very expensive to attend and I a 'senior' living almost in poverty as are many, many 'Seniors' in America - 4-shame, 4-shame America! - these backward, backward wither we are tending, worse as I have seen, days ... due to some of your ... and my, graduates' policies/actions) 'house' and hiss/boo you at your very door, seated in your very rink side - Prop. of this Col. - seats, to your very face and so do so courageously and even, perhaps, courteously (maybe- don't at all PUSH me).

RELISHED even the thought of doing so and perhaps lending my voice and spirit- what ever, what ever might help, to my team. Yet, alas- I remind myself of former central New Jersey school (basketball) coach who was so successful yet would even cry (marvelously to me) on the sidelines/bench watching his team compete- a team composed of even an (eventual) U.S. Senator. He, that coach ... my soul brother-mate. I weep.

Maybe I can make it in my truck to Hanover! I am some formidable in the stands- at least, was.

Oh, pain, pain, FOR MY TEAM.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Didn't get to the game yesterday but judging by the box score, Harvard took advantage of their scoring opportunities and Dartmouth failed on theirs (especially seeing how they got twice as many power plays as Harvard - really? In our building? Where's the respect?).

Balanced scoring is always a good sign. Not often we get to enjoy a wide margin of victory but we'll take it. Bring on UNH and BC.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Question for those who have been to Bright before -- if you have a daughter who will want to high-five the visiting team, where is the best place to sit? Do they go down a tunnel next to the visitors' bench, or skate across the ice to a tunnel on the other side? Seems like it's not a huge arena so I'm sure we can work it out on the day, but any advice would be appreciated.

You can't. Both teams enter the ice through the bench with glass surrounding.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

The tunnel not entirely enclosed. Section 6, just to the right of the Harvard bench. Visiting kids will just have to wait their turn!

With the rink renovation going on, both teams have locker rooms on the home side of the ice. They will both enter next to the Harvard bench.
