Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

What kind of crowd are we expecting for Saturday?

http://www.gocrimson.com/sports/wice/2013-14/releases/201311183cemw4

The Harvard women's hockey team will host its annual "White the Bright" game Dec. 7 when crosstown rival Boston College visits the Bright-Landry Hockey Center with the goal of breaking the program's attendance record for the top-10 showdown. The Crimson's record since women's hockey became an NCAA sport is 1,921 fans, set Jan. 11, 2004 in a matchup with Dartmouth.

It drops off pretty quickly after 1,921 though. I read this to mean there should be a decent atmosphere but plenty of spare seats.

That was after a big article in the Globe talking about the various Olympians taking part in the weekend's match-up. I remember walking out after the game and people commenting on how rude, obnoxious, and poor the band was.

That's pretty funny; Harvard's band is just horrendous.
Only if TTT and his cronies show up. :D
I will be there for the first two periods (actually with Mrs. TonyTheTiger20 for the first time in I don't know how many years). My wife got us tickets for BC @ UNH men's hockey later that night at 7pm in Durham for my birthday .

Joe will be at Harvard as well and should be there the whole game.

It's been a few years, but chants of, "Let's go Eagles," still echo in my mind.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

TTT - I'll look you and your better half up at the game. Will you be in the BC section on Sat night? I'll be at Harvard tonight and the Whit tomorrow night and Sunday afternoon.

Which game? The band rarely attends hockey games anymore, men or women. They come to the Yale game, maybe Cornell and the playoffs. That's about it.

How were they rude and obnoxious? I get that they aren't Michigan or Wisconsin in terms of performance but they have to abide by the rules set forth prior to the game which clearly states that abusive language or gestures will not be tolerated and are grounds for removal. I don't think they have ever gone that far.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Good game for the Crimson tonight at Bright. In years past, UNH would have been a formidable opponent. Not tonight. While their first line has some skill, their D is awful and their goalie was brutal. It wasn't just that she let in some soft goals; her technique and ability got me wondering why she is playing D-1 hockey. She gave her team zero chance to win.

On to the goals and there were some doozies. First up; Miye D'Oench with a breakaway and a neat move to the forehand tucked behind Wilkes nearly two minutes into the game. Thing of beauty. The play continued back and forth until Harvard cashed in on a tip-in from a point blast by Abby Frazier with Sydney Daniels doing the honors. The rest of the first belonged to Harvard even though the shots were in favor of UNH.

It was the second period where Wilkes just imploded. In a span of 1:40, she let in two cupcakes five hole where she inexplicably raised her stick and gave space between the wickets. Twenty one seconds in while Harvard was killing a penalty, Brianna Mastel kept the puck in along the right boards and fed Hillary Crowe who was stationed all alone dead center in front of Wilkes. Crowe redirected the shot/pass perfectly for the goal - one of the prettiest you will ever see college or pro. A little over a minute later Dylan Crugnale stole the puck along the left boards and walked in alone on Wilkes again slipping the puck between her legs. No stick on the ice. You can't play goal much worse than that.

The third period was more of a scrimmage with Harvard controlling play and getting a PP goal from Hillary Crowe to close out the scoring. The shots just don't tell the story. Harvard had this game won after the first period. It was over and out. UNH barely threatened with only a handful of chances that I would even characterize as difficult. Brianna Laing had a relatively easy time tonight. The only reason UNH got as many shots was due to the number of Harvard penalties, several of which were questionable.

Got a chance to meet David Crugnale, Dylan's father during the game. He told me how Dylan got involved in hockey while growing up in CA. Seems that Dylan as a 12 year old scored the winning goal against her now teammate Brianna Laing when her CA team beat Assabet Valley. David played for BC so he's going to have some mixed loyalties tomorrow.

Bring on BC and White the Bright! Should be a great game. I'd love to know how UNH managed to beat BC earlier this season because they don't have much going for them. And rumor has it that McCloskey was fired prior to the game. Jamie Wood the assistant ran the bench for the Wildcats.

I am absolutely convinced that you are not for real.

No disrespect.

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

It isn't often that a game in December takes on the feel of an NCAA playoff game in March. But this game felt like a quarterfinal showdown between the Crimson and the Lady Eagles. Big crowd, band, lots of noise and intense play from both teams. To say that both BC and Harvard left it all out there on the ice would be the understatement of the year. They had nothing left at the end of OT.

Some observations since the scoring was limited to one goal on each side. BC had the better of the play from start to finish. Not just in shots on goal but in the way they controlled the play. BC has more skill up front and a bit more overall speed. Harvard's lack of depth and finishing skill really hurt them in this game. That said, they hit the post three times and the crossbar once. They also had several two on ones or three on twos and couldn't convert either because they messed up the pass, shot wide or coughed it up. Indecision really hurt the Crimson today. They were more tentative than in previous games and they were not sharp either handling or passing the puck. Some of it had to do with BC's dogged pursuit of the puck and the way BC took away the middle of the ice not allowing Harvard any good looks at Corinne Boyle. They also zeroed in on Miye D'Oench and took her out of the game by the third period.

Both goalies performed well and in OT, both teams had near misses around the goal where the puck slipped by each goalie but players could not get a handle to bury it. It was crazy intense.

I really, really wish Harvard would use its bench. They can't win these games using fewer players than the opposition. It just won't cut it. You can see that BC isn't afraid to put out any line or D combo - they have trust in their players. We need the same.

Exam and Christmas break and then the Frozen Fenway game against Northeastern. Kudos to the team for a great first half.

Is this not regular routine for Stone, meaning, playing a short bench?

Re: Harvard Crimson 2013-2014

Nice write-up of the game, Skate79, but I couldn't help but notice one inconsistency. You first observe that "Harvard's lack of depth and finishing skill really hurt them in this game" but then you "really, really wish Harvard would use its bench". I did not see the game, nor have I seen Harvard play this year, but from afar I might conclude that there could be a good reason why the coach doesn't use its bench more... if there really is a serious fall-off in ability as you get towards the end of the bench. Don't know, but from a distance it does seem possible.

P.S. That said, I do understand that the bench will not develop as it maybe should if you leave those players sitting on the bench in big games like this one.

Well, they have 16 skaters and 14 played, all but one F and one D, in a truly "crazy intense" game. No complaints here.
