Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Is it the "so and so is chatting with Facebook friends using AIM, try it now" e-mail?

I got that one, I didn't think that was what they were talking about though, since it wasn't actually from a friend on facebook.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

I remember when Facebook wasn't incredibly annoying.

But that didn't last, and I haven't once regretted quitting it.

This. Trains have the right-of-way over semis, which have right-of-way over buses, which have right-of-way over cars and trucks. And all of them have the right-of-way over bike-riding asholes. :p

Trains weigh many tons. Cars.......a bit less. It's the Big Car-Little Car rule.

I think everyone who gets in an accident with a vehicle significantly (2x at least) larger than them should have to take and pass remedial Newtonian physics to regain their license. THAT would cut waaay down on traffic accidents.

No, because you'd have idiots who will still continue to drive, without a license.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

People who don't maintain speed.

Not people driving slow in the left lanes. That's an annoyance but easily dealt with. It seems to happen in two situations (for me at least):

1. Four lane highway, I'm coming up to pass annoying driver while we are both coming up to another, slower car. Just as I'm getting to their bumper, annoying driver speeds up to stay in front of me, and then slows down while passing the other car. Chances are you could have waited for me to pass, slotted in behind me, and done it without changing your cruise control.

2. Same thing, just without the other car. You don't like being passed, you're not paying attention, you're one of those people who don't use cruise control because you think you can maintain speed better, whatever. It happens in the left lane, I come up behind them, they don't move, I decide to pass on the right, they see me, they jam on the gas and get a half mile ahead, repeat 5 minutes later.

Just pick a speed and go.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Since we're on the driving habits that grind gears, I have one from lunch today.

I was waiting at a left turn red arrow, on a 4 lane divided highway. The road I was turning on was under construction, and thus it was backed up a bit, no big deal, it happens. I had to wait through 3 cycles of the light for it to be my turn to go, since the traffic was moving so slow on the road everyone in the turn lane was turning onto. When I got my turn, I crossed the other lanes, at first I was out in traffic, but by the time the light turned red, I was all the way onto the other road, not obstructing anyone. In fact the car behind me was able to make it onto the road before the light turned red also. While the light was green and we were still across the oncoming lanes of traffic, some ***** in her Mercedes decided she was better than everyone else and she didn't have to wait in the turn lane. So she decides to go around everyone and pulls up right next to me (this is a single lane turn lane and road), and tries to get in front of me. I hug the front bumper of the car in front of me, I wasn't going to let that **** pull that **** off. She gave me an evil stare, so I rubbed it in and laughed at her and gave her the finger. She deserved it, and she also should have had her Mercedes run over by a front end loader.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

On 694 East the traffic was stopped of course. I was caught in the left lane, and decided I wanted to exit onto Lexington. I put on my blinker, and move over when someone in the right lane is nice enough to let me over. Not only are they nice enough, they were smart enough to realize that it wasn't going to slow them down any to let me over, traffic was stop and go. I then check my blind spot again and start to move to the right to take the exit, which I was right at the bottom of. I didn't cross any fog lines whatsoever making this manuever, I didn't wait too long and go last second.

Well, the side of my car was nearly demolished by an idiot in a black Silverado who had evidently just decided to fly down the shoulder at 50mph to get to the exit. I had nowhere to go, my front bumper was already beyond the rear bumper of the car that was in front of me. Luckily his truck has good brakes, and my car can get up and go if I really need it to.

I hate it when people think they can just fly down the shoulder to get to their exit. When I see someone doing it before the exit I'm exiting on, I slide over so I'm half in my lane and half in the shoulder. If people are being dooshes while driving, I try my best to stop them, and usually **** them off. Joys of having a big truck that most other drivers won't mess with.

BTW, I'm not someone who will block people in the fast lane, if someone is going faster than me, I get out of their way and move over. Its the going around the line of traffic because someone thinks they're too good to wait their turn like the rest of us have to that ****es me off.

I have no problem with that. Keep doing it.

Myself. I find the older I get the more defensive of a driver I become. I'm so aware and seen so many stupid things on the road I'm always assuming the worst in every situation.

Everything you just said, I do down to the letter.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

There used to be an exit on the Eisenhower expressway (it's probably still there) where you exited to the southbound Dan Ryan. And even though there were two lanes heading off the Ike, the signs clearly stated that the right lane is the way to get to the Ryan. Most Chicago drivers would pull into the very crowded, slow moving right lane. The azzholes would go zooming around that long line of slow moving traffic assuming whatever they had planned in their pathetic little lives was more important than whatever anyone else had planned in THEIR pathetic little lives.

Wouldn't you know it, around a turn in the road that left lane disappeared and that's where you'd find these smartazzs sitting, waiting for traffic to clear. And virtually no one would let them back in. And anybody who would even think about letting them merge into that right lane would be the recipient of a major honkathon.

It's so childish but I'd rather chop cotton than let some p***k take advantage that way. Evidently the majority of Chicagoans agreed with me.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Okay, I'm watching Arizona/Toledo and there's a review of a play and the dummy talks about "indisputable video evidence." Probably the first of several thousand times I'm going to hear that this season. How about we put the names of all the play by play and color guys (college and pro) in a hat--and at the end of the season pull out a "winner" and shoot him in the head during the Super bowl halftime show? That's gotta rank right up there as one of the worst hoary old cliches extant. Enough. Shut up.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

What's this? Several emails from people I don't know, each exactly the same, with poorly constructed sentences, that contain links to an unknown website? Why, I think I'll click on it!

and then of course... someone sends an email later saying IT'S A VIRUS DON'T CLICK ON IT. no, really? I didn't get the exact same email 70 times, from different people? you're kidding! :p

Absolutely. I also found that becoming a long (> 1hr each way) commuter made me a much better and more defensive driver. Invariably the worst drivers are those without real jobs (young males in muscle cars, parasite moms in SUVs).

The problem with these a-holes is the very characteristics that makes them horrible drivers (irresponsibility, stupidity, self-absorption) also make them horrible people, and not worth the trouble (or risk) of giving a visual beat down.

So, everybody out there who tailgates: consider yourselves flipped off.

I only tailgate people that do stupid stuff on the road, like we've already talked about. They also get the high beams. Some might think I have a road rage problem, but I only do that kind of stuff to people who are *******s on the road.

That or the a-holes that drive AT or below the speed limit in the left lane and match the speed of the person in the right. They get tailgated.
