Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

I get that a lot from managers who have never done my job. Those who can, do...those who can't.......

That's what I love about my job. Everyone above me has done my exact job at one point or another.

Re: Grinding Away..Things that grind your gears, part three

I wish it were that easy...

Agreed.

Corporate still basically has a hiring freeze for us. Nevermind the fact that oftentimes the bosses (including the guy who runs the entire building) has to come down to help out (which corporate frowns upon). For a new hire, it basically takes about a month minimum. That includes asking for an exemption to hire, internal posting (if it could involve a PT to FT transition, then external posting for the PT vacancy), then external posting, then the interviews, drug tests, etc. It's crazy.

...make more money than those who "can".

This line gets me every time about managers not knowing what's involved. They may not be trained to push the buttons you push, but they do a hell of a lot more work in a day than the average employee realizes. I work with managers all the time when developing applications. Try booking some time on their calendars, some weeks you'd have an easier time trying to make peace in the Middle East. And then they work at home on tasks that don't have to be done in the office.

Trying to clean this house and still not getting anywhere grinds my gears. Spent close to an hour cleaning yesterday and it still looks like a disaster. Oh well, a little bit at a time...

Maybe you should gate off the rooms as you clean them so your Dad can't make a mess?

Guys who can't take hints from women that you should stop hitting on them. You're ruining things for the rest of us. Friday night's happy hour included me having to tell a coworker to stop touching a woman who continually recoiled every time he made physical contact and withdrew from conversation anytime he came near. Yet he kept doing it, with a smile on his face, thinking he was going to get somewhere. Take a hint, pal, she's already in a relationship and not interested in what you have to offer.

And then don't follow it up by asking her to put in a good word with her bosses about your application. That's just desperation and reinforcing your idiocy.

I've just used Turbo Tax for the last time. Cripes - they're trying to hawk some stupid product on every page of my tax return.

Coaches that aren't really into coachng grind my gears. Went to Fr Soph meet yesterday. The coach had his back to some of the races. Kids didn't get relay splits. Are you kidding me? For some of these kids this is one of only a few meets they get to run. Makes me crazy.

This made me laugh. I know 3 of those 4 people!

Clean the kitchen and your room. rotate between the 2.

And I finally let him have it this morning. We're down to one car between us (transmission went on the other one), and he seems to think I'm going to help him clean out the mess he made in the working car. He's got popcorn, styrofoam cups, cans of Monster, etc. in there and it's a pig sty. I told him it's his mess and that he's responsible... he was NOT happy with me, but I don't care.

We got a new dog (Daisy) from the Humane Society. Fantastic dog. Very sweet (and submissive) disposition. Great sister to our other dog, Ellie. Still figuring out how to deal with the cat, but doing pretty well.

Only issue: she's a former stray. And God bless her, she's actually really smart. She keeps finding new and inventive ways to escape from our backyard. We've added second latches to our gates, only to find out that she dug a hole to get under the fence. We cover that hole and put bricks up between the bottom of the fence and the ground, and she just digs another hole in another spot.

I love this dog, and am trying to work it out with her, but this is getting really old.

Are you the fourth one?

(I might be one or two of them.)

We had an Alaskan Husky that was just like this. We put in a fully fenced gated area for him and he dug out the first day we put him in. Quickly realized with that dog we had to put him on a leaset etc, we choose a 100 foot run. After a short while on the run the dog figured out how to unhook the run lead from his collar. We had to use a screw/lock attachment piece to hook the run to his collar so he could not get loose.

People who do not know hockey etiquette grind my gears. Had a few couples with a bunch of little children in front of us. Arrived and stood around while this wisp of a woman directed where everyone should sit while play was going. 1st goal they were sitting, then standing and moving seats. second goal. repeat. Getting pretty irritating. The guy sitting behind me said something about them not knowing hockey etiquette and asked me what happened after the goal. I said I didn't see, they were in the way again. The wispy thing lit into me that they needed to take the child to the bathroom. (of course they weren't going to the bathroom everytime just totally impervious to the game going on). I told her they should wait for a whistle. She tells me the kid is 5, would my kid wait? I say old enough to wait for a whistle, yes my kid would wait. She tells me my kid must be some kind of a hero. I told her he sure is. After trying to stare me down while I was watching the game she got up and moved telling the tallest guy in their group to sit right in front of me and sit tall. Sadly for her we didn't spend enough time in the offensive zone for it to make a bit of difference.:p

Lately I've been playing around with computer case modifications. Today, I bought a liquid neon CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp). It comes with the CCFL inverter that the company mass-produces, which has two outlets to plug lights into. Since the unit only comes with one light, there's an extra outlet. Do you think the company would:

a) Just leave the extra outlet open, in case the user has a second light and doesn't want to use a second clunky converter

or

b) Take the time to hot glue a connector into the extra outlet, rendering it useless

Take a guess.

Unfreakinbelievable. And far from unique in today's America. I think TV has had a corrosive effect on our collective manners. We talk, we walk around, we eat, and DVR's make it even easier to be boorish. The problem is taking these manners on the road. As a kid the old man took all of us to see a Pete Fountain concert at an outdoor theatre. Godfrey Hirsch was there and IIRC so was Al Hirt. Some pretty powerful talent. And the music was wonderful. Except for the two middle aged ladies sitting behind us who yakked constantly throughout (why would somebody buy tickets, get dressed up and drive to a concert to spend the entire time discussing the affairs of their boring lives?) Anyway, the old man put up with it for a long time, finally asking the two insufferably rude babes if they'd like him to ask the guy with the clarinet to shut up. Naturally they were offended at his impertinence. But at least they shut up. I'm guessing you handled this situation better than I would have.
