Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

August 2004: I was in attendance when the first-known "Sieve" chant was started at a Minnesota Twins-Detroit Tigers game. Shortly thereafter, HairPlugGuy was beaked mercilessly for trying to explain that "Sieve" is not a baseball chant.

Maybe not sports greatness, but definitely great.

IALTO.

And while I had no personal interest, that 5OT Duluth East game against Apple Valley in about 1996 or so was awesome.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

Since I'm from MN, the disappointing/heartbreaking games are much easier to think of, thank you Vikings.

Disappointing, in person:
2009 NFC Championship Game: Vikings-Saints, no description needed.

Disappointing, on TV:
1998 NFC Championship Game: Vikings-Falcons, again, no description needed.
Every Twins postseason since about '03

Awesome, in person:
Twins-White Sox 2010 regular season: at Target Field, Thome hits a walk-off off of Thornton. That game was incredible, even though it was just a regular season game.
2009 NCAA Championship game: Even though I'm not a fan of either team, that was an awesome game. I still laugh when I remember the guy in front of us telling his little kids "pay attention, you're going to see history being made, Miami is going to win the national championship" with about a minute left in the game. :D
Twins game 162: Last regular season game at the Dome, to force a game 163.

Awesome, on TV:
Twins game 163: Probably the most intense game I've ever seen, with the exception of 1991 Game 7.
1991 World Series, Game 7: No explanation needed.
2002 National Championship: Gophers winning in OT at the X.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

No Minnesota fans have mention the Holy Cross game. Progress? :p

Best in-person: NYA defeating Waterville at Alfond Arena for the state championship in 1997. They had beaten us both times in the regular season and again in a mid-season tournament. I gave an interview to the Waterville paper the day before essentially guaranteeing an upset. The team really came through. I think one of the players from Waterville blew his chance to go to Maine when he missed a wide open net from about 5' out. Shawn was in attendance and he wasn't impressed with what he saw.

Best on TV: Maine vs Providence, 1989 NCAA Quarters, Game 3. It was the first hockey game I had watched after the injury that ended my playing career. Maine was down 3-1 when Bruce Major scored from behind the net, on his ass. Then Scott Pellerin fired an absolute laser to tie the score. In the second OT Martin Robitaille took the puck on his backhand and an eternity later put it past the swipe of Lyle Mongoose and sent Maine to the FF. It was a great game, but has a deeper meaning for me because that is the night I rediscovered the sport. I can't imagine where I would be today if not for that game.

Worst moment: The 1992 Quarters in Providence against Michigan State. Maine had lost only three games that season (all on the road and all by one goal). We had already beaten MSU during the season. It was a foregone conclusion. As I was riding the elevator up to the press box the "Best Game Ever Played" between Duke and Kentucky was wrapping up (I missed seeing Laettner's shot by about three minutes). It was the first year of neutral site regionals and the NCAA had responded by blacking out the game (Morons). As such, I was one of only a handful of people who filmed the game. Michigan State beat us 3-2 in an unbelievable upset. What made it worse is that Jean-Yves Roy had scored in the middle frame but the light never came on and the goal waved off because MSU goalie Gilmore had caught the puck. JY cursed in French and earned a 10-minute misconduct (I always wondered if the ref spoke French and understood what he said, or just gave him the 10-minute break based on a hunch). I went back between periods and reviewed the tape...JY had scored; Gilmore had caught the puck inside the net. I couldn't believe we had lost. I sat down and didn't move for 10 minutes or more. Finally a sportswriter came over and snapped me out of it and helped me pack up. That game still haunts me.

Worst on TV: "So the winning run is at second base, with two outs, three and two to Mookie Wilson...little roller up along first... behind the bag! It gets through Buckner! Here comes Knight, and the Mets win it"

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

This is the kind of thing that if you post the same question once a year, I would answer it differently as there are numerous answers to both question.

I'll go with RPI's overtime victory over Cornell (with what's-his-name in goal ;)) in December 1968 for the greatest I ever attended. Had RPI not won that game, I might have saved myself over 117,000 posts on USCHO, since, as was revealed later, RPI was seriously considering moving its hockey program to D3 because the team had been noncompetitive for two years.

For the latter I will go with the 1980 victory over Russia, although I knew the result beforehand. If tape-delay makes that invalid, I'll go with RPI's victory over PC in the 1985 NCAA championship game. It wasn't actually a great game, but I loved the result. (The semi-final vs UMD was a much better game, but again it was broadcast tape delayed, and I knew the result.)

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

In person: The longest men's D1 hockey game last year in Schenectady. Union vs. Quinnipiac 5 OT marathon. Best part was standing behind the Union net when the winning goal was scored!

That might be the most fun I've ever had listening to a radio broadcast and not caring who won. The (Union, I think) announcer was so punch drunk (he did the entire broadcast alone and IIRC he had been up for about 20 straight hours) that he pretty much broke character and just joked his way through the final few OTs, while a dozen or so of us listened and made comments on USCHO which he then read on-air.

That was awesome. Do I remember right that he hadn't eaten in hours and we offered to have pizza delivered and he said on the air that his wife was bringing him something? That was such a fun night.

I remember. That guy actually emailed me privately after the game to talk about it. If I ever meet him I'm going to buy him a beer. (Also lost in the fun, he called a darn good game under very difficult circumstances.)

It was a small episode of what I love the most about college hockey.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

Best in Person - The 1979 ECAC quarterfinal between Cornell and Providence. Cornell comes back from a 5-1 deficit with 12 minutes left in the 3rd to win 6-5 in OT. Nothing like it before or since.

Best on TV - I gotta admit, the Phils winning the series in 2008 was pretty **** amazing.

Worst in Person - 2009 NCAA lacrosse final. Cornell loses to Syracuse after giving up a 3 goal lead with 5 minutes left.

Worst on TV - So hard to pick. I'm a Philadelphia sports fan. I guess I'll go with the Super Bowl against Oakland. That's when I learned the Eagles will always find a way to break your heart.

Best I should have been at - The 1980 gold medal game in LP. Three frat brothers went. My parents wouldn't give me the money to go with them.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

That might be the most fun I've ever had listening to a radio broadcast and not caring who won.
Around midnight, the rink started filling back up with students who had been attending some dance or something. Guys in suits and girls in skirts and dresses. I thought I was dreaming when I saw a pair of stockinged legs walking in front of me! Word had apparently gotten out on campus that the marathon was on. About the only bad thing about that night was the fact that concessions shut down before the end of the 3rd!

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

In person:
Cold War- Everything was perfect about that game. Night game, random cold temps in early October, #1 vs #4 and awesome shooting flames during goals/introductions.
Went to a Whitecaps (Tigers single-A affiliate) game and saw the pitcher from the road team throw a no-hitter. Ok, it's not a monumental event, or even that memorable since I can't remember the team or the player, but it was still pretty cool to see even at the single-A level.

On TV:
2010 Olympic Hockey Final- USA/Canada even though it was a loss and that one guy had to score the OT winner.
A lot of games from a lot of sports. It would take too much time to try to sort them out.

Edit: I guess if we're doing worsts too.

Worst in person:
MSU-Iowa at Iowa in '02 and '04.
MSU basketball vs Grand Valley in '07.

Worst on TV:
Tigers 163rd against the Twins. If Gerald Laird doesn't swing at ball four they probably win that game.
The Big Chill
Many O' MSU football plus others.

(apparently that wasn't the only time he's pulled that)

I also remember Ben Eaves swatting a puck out of the air to beat Michigan to go to the Frozen Four. 2003, 2004 I think. At Verizon Center.

Worst live was Mike Mottau in the 2000 NCAA finals crouched in the cage after the ENG. UND fans will remember this particularly since there is a 20' tall mural of it up in REA. 2nd place was Niko Dimitrakos in the 2001 HE finals - this time Mottau getting blatantly tripped, allowing Niko to go to the net as time expired.

Best on TV: Dave Roberts.
Worst on TV: Eli Manning decides to become superman for a play, 2007.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

Two Cubs memories:

Opening day 1969 (a season that ended in tragedy) my best friend and I, and a medical school buddy of his went to see the Cubs take on the Cardinals. The buddy had only the vaguest idea of who Ernie Banks was. We tried to explain. Wrigley was SRO. First at bat: Standing ovation. Ernie goes yard with two on. Another standing O. Second at bat: standing O. Ernie goes yard AGAIN with two on. Standing O. Third at bat: Standing O, Ernie drives in two runs with a double. Standing O. Fourth at bat: Standing O. Ernie singles. And gets his 8th standing O of the afternoon as Durocher sends in a runner for him. 4 for 4, two dingers, 8 rbi and 8 standing ovations. The buddy needed no further education on the subject of Mr. Cub.

Summer of '68, Cubs making noises as a contender. Sunday afternoon against the Reds. SRO. Ferguson Jenkins pitches and bats the Cubs to a win. The scores come in from NY, where the Mets have beaten the first place cardinals in a double header, and the Cubs move into first place. Maybe 30K fans refused to leave 'til the scoreboard guys lowered the eastern division pennants on the scoreboard, reversed St. Louis and Chicago, then ran them back up the flag pole. Amazing.

Finally, the '80 Miracle: I was in Houston, driving on Loop 610 down near Astroworld. It was late in the afternoon. Bumper to bumper. When suddenly horns started honking all around me. Guys were pumping their fists. Giving the "we're number one" sign. And I knew instantly what it was: WE HAD BEATEN THE RUSSIANS. Like everyone else, I watched the game that evening, but it had been played that afternoon. Astonishing. Amazing.
