Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

In person: The longest men's D1 hockey game last year in Schenectady. Union vs. Quinnipiac 5 OT marathon. Best part was standing behind the Union net when the winning goal was scored!

TV: The one that stands out is WS game 7 in '86, Mets vs. Red Sox.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

I'm really curious about this one. I was at that game, and I was bored to tears. The arena was empty, the game was terrible. I'm interested in what it was about the game that caused you to put it on your list. :)
It was Niagara's 4th year in existence and they beat New Hampshire in their first ever NCAA Tournament game.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

In Person: I'll have to go with the Cornell-Wisconsin triple OT thriller in the regionals, although the end result was unfortunate.

On TV: I'll have to agree with the Giants-Pats Super Bowl.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

In person: 2000 east regional SLU vs BU. Still the longest NCAA playoff game, and an absolute thriller at that.

On TV: I'll have to go with the Yanks/Phillies game 6, if only because I go to school in the Bronx and got to experience the celebration a bit out in the streets afterwards.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

2009 Frozen Four National Championship Game. Nothing can rival it, no matter what has happened since, my most joyous sports event experienced live.

Ones I watched on television? Liverpool comes from 3-0 down in the 2005 Champions League Final against AC Milan to win on penalties.
1986 World Series, Games 6 and Games 7
Giants beating the Pats, 18-1!
Giants beating the Bills

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

I'll break this down into "Best" and "Favorite" with Favorite having more personal meaning, whereas Best is more widely recognized.

Favorite In-Person:
2010 Winter Classic - Fenway was louder after Sturm's GWG than after a walk-off HR

Best In-Person:
2004 World Series Game 1 - Buzz from knocking off the Yanks carried over, this game set tone for the whole series.

Favorite on TV:
2004 ALCS Game 6 (Bloody Sock: Part 1) - The Hoodie Homer, The Glove Slap, and of course The Bloody Sock. Furthermore, McCarver's dumbest comment ever, after Hideki Matsui got a leadoff walk in the 9th "That was just as bad as a home run"

Best on TV:
Super Bowl XXXVI - Patriots beat the Rams. It was a solid family bonding moment, with my grandfather, dad & uncles, plus me & cousins wathing our team win the first (of many) championships.

Least Favorite In-Person:
2008 UNH-BC in the Hockey East Semis - triple OT and I didn't even see the goal because my contacts had dried out

Worst In-Person:
1998 Red Sox vs. Royals - I'd slept through Little League practice and figured going to a Sox game with my Dad would be considered good enough. I remember Lou Merloni was involved, so it couldn't have been that good.

Least Favorite on TV
Super Bowl XLII - I had to drive back to Durham from Bedford that night for class Monday morning

Worst on TV:
Any episode of WWF Smackdown I watched. There were many.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

On TV, 10/25/86: God bless Bill Buckner.

In person, 7/8/94: a very near miss -- my GF got sick at Fenway and we had to leave early... one inning before John Valentin's unassisted triple play.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

In Person (Good): 2008 AL Central Division One Game Playoff - Sox/Twins @ Comiskey. That was the loudest I have ever seen that stadium... Also the most dramatic game I have ever seen... The whole time, you knew that one moment could change the outcome... Seeing Griffey Jr. save the game by throwing out a runner at the plate from Center Field is probably the most vivid memory I have from that game...

In Person (Bad): 1999 Indy 500... I'm a die-hard Robby Gordon fan... Seeing him run out of fuel coming down to take the white flag was simply heartbreaking... You can't come any closer without winning America's greatest race :(

TV (Good) - Game 3 and Game 4 of the 2005 World Series... Game 3 for the heroics of Geoff Blum coming at 2am and having to be up for a test the next day at 8am... Game 4 is self explanatory... It was the first time a World Series Trophy had returned to Chicago in 88 years...

TV (Good) - Game 6 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals... Because of work, I hardly got to see any of the Hawks playoff games live... This was the only game of the Finals that I got to watch... The bar we were at was loud and into the game... The pause that came over the place as we all wondered where the puck was on Kane's final shot was indescribable... When Kane raised his arms, the place went nuts :D

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

Best (TV): 2002 MN Gophers NCAA Title. At a BW3's, and the whole place erupted, people were hugging, toasting drinks, high-fiving, the works. It was like a giant house party with your closest friends. As a bonus, some friends who were at the game called us and we heard the Rouser from the crowds in the streets.

Worst (TV): Every mother*ing Buffalo Bills SB.

Best (in person): 2007 Final Five. Blake Wheeler. I've never heard an arena that loud. Ever. It was amazing. From almost silence to pure eruption.

Worst (in person): 2006 Final Five. 8-7. SCSU beats MN. I had to leave the game early, because I was literally going to hit something or someone, and at that point it didn't really matter which. I can only imagine how bad it would have been had I stayed. I was madder than my infamous "Mankato Meltdown" that many on the board here know about/have heard about.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

I thought of another one on TV. Recent, but defining.

USA v Algeria in the 2010 World Cup. I was watching all alone in my room getting ready for work. Pushed me over the line I had tiptoed over. I am now a huge soccer fan.

And the Ghana game, I was at work (airport) and there were 350 people in the bar transfixed. SEVERAL people missed flights.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

In person - 2009 West Regional Quarterfinals Princeton vs. UMD- I thought UMD was done, but they scored two goals within 49 seconds to send the game into overtime. The final goal came with .8 seconds left. I will never forget the screaming loudness of that game. When they tied it up there was no doubt in my mind we were going to win that game.

On TV - Worst Game - The Vikings losing in 1998 to the Atlanta Falcons. Why did Gary Anderson pick that time to miss that field goal?

Also I wished I wouldn't have missed the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

Best On TV

Best In Person

Tech Senior Weekend 2007, sweeping Wisconsin 2-0 and 4-2, including the pulling of Elliott 1:47 into the Saturday game. Cemented me to this team, unfortunately. :o :p

Worst On TV

I remain bitter about the '95 Devils debacle, but this one still actually hurts a little:

Worst In-Person

Travis Turnbull's 2OT game-winner on Nolan to continue nearly three fuggin' decades of GLI title drought. To make matters worse, Kattelus had clanked the post behind Sauer just moments earlier.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

I haven't been to many in person awesome ones. The Wheeler OT goal in the Final Five against UND is up there.

On TV, 1989. I hate to acknowledge that it happened. I was only five, but I remember it as if it happened a few years ago. It is the game that got me hooked on Gopher, and college hockey in general.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

Best in person:
- Down 6-3 to NMU at home with 2:30 left. Fans start heading out of the arena. Then Nick Anderson scores. Then Colin Murphy scores. Fans start heading back INTO the arena. Goalie pulled. Then Colin Murphy scores again. Then Colin Murphy completes the natural hat trick and wins it 7-6 in OT. The game that founded Mitch's Misfits.
- I was at the 8-7 SCSU/MN slugfest as well. As soon as it hit 7-6, I remember sprinting full speed from the top of the Xcel to the basement and yelling at the packing-up tSBFitW "YOU HAVE TO COME SEE THIS RIGHT THE FARK NOW."

Worst in person:
- The first Invasion game at NMU. Background: Tech and NMU have played sixty of the most godawful minutes of hockey ever played. NMU has a total of NINE shots on goal. Tech has 30, but they're all slappers from the blue line into the goalie's chest. Somehow, it's tied at 1 and we're heading to OT. With about a minute left in OT, Ray Kaunisto drives the net hard, sending a Tech defenseman careening with him into Tech's savior goalie Michael-Lee Teslak. Teslak is down and out (had been fighting back spasms all season.) Trainer comes out, whole nine yards, Teslak is helped off the ice after about ten minutes.

And then this happens.

<iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/qgMVcop5oBc" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe>

That's Jordan Foote buzzing Brian Stewart, who sells it like it's the god**** Stone Cold Stunner. He then receives a whole 12-pack of whoop-*** courtesy of Matt Siddall.

NMU won in Houghton the next night 2-0, winning the season series 2-0-1 and seriously denting Tech's PWR (they were in the early hunt for an at-large.) To add insult to injury, they brought the retired season series trophy Ramada Cup out of their locker room and paraded it around the ice. This was at the time going to be my last NMU game as a student. I was not a pretty picture after that game. I think Nick Enz added Copper Country Mental Health Services to his speed-dial for me after that one.

I've never seen an opposing team's fanbase look as dumbfounded and dejected as the Tech fans after that goal went in. Call it my Best In-Person Schadenfreude Moment :D.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

Two notes to Twitch's post:

The 6-3 comeback win spawned this guy:
<iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/cQ26EOTY_Pc" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe>

And I was also there for tInvasion NMU-MTU series. Horrible, horrible hockey. It probably took them 10-15 minutes just to sort out the penalties, and IIRC there were 9 seconds left, and I guarantee it wouldn't have mattered if there were 60 seconds left.

If you value your sanity, don't discuss anything at all concerning the 2007-08 season with me.
