"Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

Re: "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

Great Feedback everyone, thank you. So far I have...

Michigan:
- '98 Regional Final @ Yost - Michigan comes back in the third to knockoff the Sioux on their way to their 9th Title.

Wisconsin:
- '08 Regional Final @ Kohl - North Dakota storms back in the third period to tie the game and eventually win in OT.
- '83 WCHA First Round Game 2 - Wisconsin wins in an epic triple OT game on a shortie on their way to a National Title
- '82 Regular Season - Water Bottle Incident.

Denver:
- '04 Regional Final - Some consider it the best game ever, with Denver edging out North Dakota 1-0 on their route to a Title
- '05 National Title - The Pioneers and the Sioux play well, and the game is tight until the 3rd when DU edges out the Sioux for the Trophy

RPI:
- Thanksgiving '84 - Sioux win a wild one in Grand Forks, 7-6 over the eventual National Champions.

Duluth:
- '86 Regular Season - Sioux stage a miraculous comeback against the Bulldogs to win in OT 8-7.

BC:
- '00 Title Game - Sioux come back from 2-1 to beat the Eagles 4-2 for their 7th National Championship
- '01 Title Game - North Dakota comes back from 2-0 to tie the game in the last few minutes of regulation and send it to OT where Kyrs Kolanos scores to give the Eagles their first Title in 52 years.

BU:
- '97 Title Game - North Dakota is down 2-0 after 1, but scores 5 in a row in the 2nd to win their 6th National Title.

I'm literally looking for games against every team, so please keep them coming. Thanks.

If you have trouble finding one against a team like Tech, I would suggest the January 1987 game in which Bob Joyce scored 6 goals and added 3 assists in a blowout win. Not much of a game, but the place was electric during those last few minutes as Gino kept double shifting Hrkac and Joyce trying to get that 6th goal, which he finally did with less than a minute to play.

You may look back into the 70s during Tech's glory days. I'm sure there is something there.

I'm tempted to start a thread - Greatest Games your team has been involved in. Not restrict it to one team.

This is a great topic!!!

The problem is, while Tech was great the the '70's, UND was terrible. The Sioux and Huskies have played a few memorable OT games, but none that really stand out, at least for me, going back now 30+ years.

As far as Tech is concerned, there were some great games back in the WCHA Playoffs in the 60's between the two teams. Also, the game early in the '07-'08 season where Tech looked like they were going to be a top-half squad was a good one. Whenever you've played a team 200+ times there are going to be some excellent games.

Re: "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

Looking at the series history quickly between Tech and UND, it looks like in 1968 in the WCHA Playoffs @ Houghton was a good one. The Sioux and the Huskies drew the opening game of a two game-total goals series. The winner basically would go to the NCAA Tournament with the loser missing out. The Sioux won 3-2. Perhaps someone with a better knowledge of that specific game could shed some light as far as whether or not how great it was.

My uncle was telling me about games at the old building in Houghton. He went on about how they would leave the arena during the intermissions...go across the street to a bar...pound a couple drinks and get back in for the next period. :) He went to Tech in the mid-late 60's.

Re: "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

UNH:
- '09 Regional Semifinal - North Dakota is up 5-3 midway through the third when UNH pulls within 1. The Wildcats score with 1 second left to tie the game and send it into OT where they win in the opening minutes.

That would be the exact game I would choose. Phenomenal game, and the best UNH/UND game I've ever seen (not that there have been many in my time).

A few suggestions, trying to mix up the datess:

Michigan: January 20, 1979. UND 9-8 in Overtime. Michigan had a 3-goal lead in the third, but UND scores 3 gtoals in less than a minute. As loud as I ever heard the old Ralph. Or, more recently ... 2007 West Regional semifinal, Pepsi Center. Back and forth, crazy game that wasn't really decided until the final horn.

MSU-Mankato: The 2nd WCHA playoff series between the teams ... March 12-13-13, 1999. WCHA three-peaters pushed to the edge of elimination by the automatic-10-seed Mavericks. Game 1 to the Mavs, 3-2 OT. Game 2 to the Sioux 3-2 nailbiter. Game 3 a 10-0 tidal wave won by UND.

UMD: 11/3/78: Sioux lead 4-0 after 53 minutes, but the Dogs score 4 including 2 in the final minute to tie it, and of course finish the comeback in OT. Absolutely gutwrenching to be at that one.
or
2/27/04 & 2/28/04: Zach Parise and the Sioux sweep UMD to win the MacNaughton.

US Olympic Team: 2/2/60. 8-8 tie. Would love to hear about that one ....

Re: "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

Although they lost both of them and it was not tournament time, the Jan 2000 series in Madison was something else. Two OT losses on basically the same play with the same guy (Hukalo) scoring the winners. I believe the teams were tied for first going into the weekend, and the atmosphere was just electric. I think both Sauer and Blais described a moment before the Fri game when they exchanged looks acknowledging how charged the building was.

Re: "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

Fighting Sioux 23 - Great thread. Its amazing the memories that come up. Especially between DU and UND. But, when you read of the classic games between teams that are not your own, you get a sense of missing something that was truly great.

This thread brings to life a lot of those great moments that many would never hear about.

Great work!

Re: "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

Can't get any bigger than the national title game, so I nominate the 2001 finale :)

Re: "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

Not to be a downer, but the one Sioux related game I''ll never forget was the game when UND came to play BU in October 1995 and saw Travis Roy get hurt. I'll never forget how quiet WBA was just minutes after they raised their 1995 NCAA title banner.

Anyways, its hard to beat the 2001 NCAA final vs BC as far as just flat out great hockey. I remember the BC kid making that save in Lundbolm in the first period like it was yesterday.

Re: "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

You know, there were some great games involving the Sioux and the Pioneers back in "the olden days." Curiously, these are all DU wins.

'66 WCHA playoffs, winner goes to FF: Sioux leading 4-1 after two. DU scores 3 in the third and wins it in OT. DU chancellor runs out on the ice to embrace Murray Armstrong.

'68 NC game in Duluth. Sioux came out smoking, goalie Gerry Powers making saves on his lips to keep 'em from scoring. 2nd was even. 3rd all DU as Pioneers score 4 times to take the title, 4-0.

'69 Saturday night regular season game in the old DU Arena. DU scores at 19:59 of the third to untie it and win.

Great memories of a great rivalry. To be the best, you've got to beat the best.

Dirty would like this one: The opening games last year against Merrimack and the boy wonder from France. OOPS would have been but the Frenchman did not play.
