"Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

Re: "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

Like all Frenchies, he surrendered before the battle even began.

Re: "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

You know, there were some great games involving the Sioux and the Pioneers back in "the olden days." Curiously, these are all DU wins.

'66 WCHA playoffs, winner goes to FF: Sioux leading 4-1 after two. DU scores 3 in the third and wins it in OT. DU chancellor runs out on the ice to embrace Murray Armstrong.

'68 NC game in Duluth. Sioux came out smoking, goalie Gerry Powers making saves on his lips to keep 'em from scoring. 2nd was even. 3rd all DU as Pioneers score 4 times to take the title, 4-0.

'69 Saturday night regular season game in the old DU Arena. DU scores at 19:59 of the third to untie it and win.

Great memories of a great rivalry. To be the best, you've got to beat the best.

Those were the days!

Names both Sioux and DU fans should recognize.
All Americans on those teams
DU Wayne Smith
UND Terry Casey
DU Jim Wiste
UND Jerry Lafond
DU Keith Magnuson
UND Terry Abram
DU George Morrisom
UND John Marks

Another memorable name: UND's Mike Curran. Although I don't recall if he was an All American, Curran was the goaltender for the '72 US Olympic team that took a silver medal. What wound up being the silver medal game came against the Czechs. Curran gave up a goal in the first minute, then shut them out for the next 59. He played possessed.

Turning point of the game came about half way through the 3rd, US leading 3-1. Their future NHL center Vaclav Nedomansky had Curran dead to rights, down on the ice, but fanned on the shot. Nedomansky got off a second shot, which Curran stuffed. On the next rush up the ice, the US scored, making it 4-1! Stick a fork in 'em. Huffer Christiansen of UMD was also on that team and Ron Naslund of DU.

It was my pleasure to be there for all of those games. We recall our two gold medal teams: Squaw Valley and Lake Placid, as we should. But that '72 team wasn't shabby, believe me.

Another was in November 1984, over Thanksgiving weekend, the Sioux hosted RPI. UND won 7-6 in OT in what I believe was RPI's last loss in a championship season in which they went something like 35-2. They had a dynamite team, and that night it was two teams just throwing haymakers at each other (literally, I think, since J. Archibald still played for the Sioux). :p
Yes it was RPI 2nd and last loss that year. They also tied LSSU in the second game of a two-game total-goal series in thw first round of the NCAA tourney, finishing 35-2-1. You didn't mention that RPI defeated UND the next night 8-2. :)

Very true..but he could have mentioned the previous 2 games between the 2 teams in the NCAA Tournament in '84 :)

- '07 WCHA Final Five Championship Game - Blake Wheeler scores an amazing goal to give the Gophers a 3-2 overtime win
- '07 West Regional Final - Chris Porter scores a wraparound in OT to send the Sioux to St. Louis

Michigan Tech:

Here is the updated list. Please continue to nominate games. I'll post what games I've selected for some of the "lesser" series (ie. SCSU, UAA, Mankato, BSU...series where there just isn't a lot of history) here shortly.

Here are some of the "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota and some of their "lesser rivals". To give some insight on why I choose specific games, I was looking for a few things:
1. Quality of Game - Were both teams playing well or was it one team making a bunch of mistakes
2. Closeness of Game
3. Importance of Game

Using those as the main criteria, I selected the following games (if you have others that you think are better, mention them please)...

Alaska-Anchorage - The most recent game, October 8th, 2010. North Dakota rushed to a 5-1 lead, and then Anchorage made several great plays to tie the game. Both teams played relatively well for stretches and the game finished in a 5-5 tie.

Bemidji State - January 3rd, 2009
This was the second game of a two game series between North Dakota and Bemidji State. The Beavers got on the board early with two goals in the opening minutes to take a 2-0 lead. North Dakota responded with a goal of their own to close the game to 2-1 at the end of 1. The Sioux tied it up in the 2nd, and took the lead on a shorthanded goal midway through the third. Bemidji did not give up though, and responded with the tying goal minutes later. The game remained tied and went to overtime where Brett Hextall gave the Sioux the victory just 31 seconds into overtime.

Mankato - March 12th, 1999 - WCHA First Round, Game 1
The series began with Mankato, a team that had yet to be an "official" WCHA team, drawing the #1 Ranked, and MacNaughton Cup winner North Dakota for the first round series. North Dakota was 24-2-2 against the WCHA that season, and many considered this series just a formality before the Sioux went to St. Paul for the Final Five. After all, the Sioux did beat Mankato in each of their previous 6 meetings, and twice already that season at Mankato. However, the Mavericks would play an inspired game, and knock off the Sioux 3-2 in overtime.

St. Cloud - 2001 WCHA Final Five Championship
While the Sioux and the Huskies have met in the Final Five title game two other times, the first was the best game between the two squads. SCSU came out on fire and took a commanding lead, when North Dakota responded tying the game up at 5 and sending it into OT, where SCSU won in Overtime.

The controversial "goalie interference" OT goal. ;) :)

Re: "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

The 1997 final five championship game in the old St. Paul Civic Center. Sioux vs Gophers. Peter Armburst scores in OT. This win helped propel them to a ncaa title a few weeks later.

This also was the first Blais team that was really dominant and started a long run of great UND teams.

I was surprised that he didn't. They have been mentioned quite often by RPI fans on RPI threads.

%&***( Casey. ;)

RPI could have gone back to back as they had a tremendous team that year. We got lucky. As Dean Blais used to say, when you get to the playoffs, they should change the name of the game to "goalie". :)

Re: "Greatest Games" involving North Dakota

50+ posts in and some UND rube hasn't said "all of them" or "are there 'greatest' games that don't involve UND?" What is this world coming to?

The Holy Cross game involves North Dakota, as it occurred in the state. The thread says involving North Dakota, which is open to interpretation.

My uncle was telling me about games at the old building in Houghton. He went on about how they would leave the arena during the intermissions...go across the street to a bar...pound a couple drinks and get back in for the next period. :) He went to Tech in the mid-late 60's.

You know where people still do that?

DULUTH.

Not to be a downer, but the one Sioux related game I''ll never forget was the game when UND came to play BU in October 1995 and saw Travis Roy get hurt. I'll never forget how quiet WBA was just minutes after they raised their 1995 NCAA title banner.

You have difficulty with reading comprehension. This is not "list every game UND has played in."

Ironic that you discuss reading comprehension because if you would have read my response to the Holy Cross mention, I provided clarification to the thread title. :)

Very true on all counts. On paper, the '84 team was probably slightly better than the '85 team, but it didn't have the experience that the '85 team had. The '85 team was able to beat a hot goalie (Terreri), although it did take an offside play to win. The '84 team outplayed UND but couldn't beat Casey.

The '85 RPI team was one of the best ever. IIRC, they were one of the best teams of all-time according to my rankings threads that I did a few years back.

EDIT: Looking at my rankings, the '85 RPI team ranks as the #9 team of all-time. FWIW, the '84 RPI team ranks as the #85 team of all-time. Neither the '84 or '85 Sioux finished in the top 100.

Well there's a difference between not memorizing the whole thread and calling a game with a life-altering injury to a player a "greatest game."

Your ranking was based purely on game results and achievements (nothing wrong with that at all). IMO, the players who entered RPI in 84-85 were not as good as those who graduated in 1984.

The '85 RPI team had their 25th reunion in February. This included a panel discussion with four members of the team http://www.rpitv.org/productions/276-legends-of-85-panel-discussion. The games vs. UND are mentioned around the 8 minute mark (and I think a few other times including the question period at the end, but I did not listen to the whole 1:19 again just now. :D )

Edit: reading your first post, you are probably correct that the 7-6 game was the greatest game ever between RPI and UND.

I wasn't paying attention to college hockey back in 1959, but it's probably worth mentioning that UND won its first NCAA championship in the then-called RPI Field House. College hockey has certainly progressed from holding its Championship series in on-campus, 5000-seat arenas.
